Hi Alex Another awesome info dump! I have an idea for you for a video series. Build a new tank from scratch, your "ideal/perfect" tank. Take it slow and talk through EVERY aspect. Selecting substrate, plants, tank size, aquascaping, water parameter monitoring, when to add stock, how you decide what to stock, etc, etc. The idea is to get insight into your thought process and problem solving
@MrSwifty21
@MrSwifty21 10 месяцев назад
And then do weekly updates on the progress of the tank. How the parameters shift over time, how you manipulate or counter that shift, plant growth, future plans, live stock progress, substrate stratification, etc...

❤ This video is awesome. I have been off of alcohol for 13 months now. I was drunk daily for 15 years. In the last year, I have started 4 nano aquariums that I'm really proud of. I have so much to show for my sobriety. I'm getting ready to plant my new 46-gallon. I've learned so much from you. Thank you for your content. I can't even begin to express the dopamine I get from looking at my aquariums. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.

Finally! The first aquarium/aquascape-enthusiast I can stand listening to! Thank you for not using a million smash cuts with stupid graphics and obnoxious voiceovers. So glad the algorithm finally got me here. Subscribed and alerts turned on 👍🏼 Love love love these deep dives and listening to a person who knows what they're talking about without injecting unnecessary ego, instead approaching topics with the genuine curiosity of an actual scientist, and is clearly very passionate about what they do.

Aww oh why thankyuh! You jist made my day! Im glad you're here as well! Welcome 🙏. Dont be shy if you have questions or thoughts...corrections or critiques. As long as its the truth, as far as science knows it.. it never hurts my feelings to make a correction. I strive to put out unique and solidly researched information here. The algorithm often hates it lol... but just stop by the channel's main page or search a subject with "@fishtory" before it on youtube search bar, and perhaps you'll enjoy one of the 1400+ videos I've created

I have to agree that despite being mainly a "talking head" you're very easy to listen to and stay engaged; the mark of a good presenter/lecturer. I prefer to watch at 2x; it super concentrates both the enthusiasm and the knowledge! I usually "skip around" videos with the 10-second button but with yours I find myself thinking that I don't want to miss anything. Quality, nutrient dense 😂 content.

Yes. You can definitely "charge your deep substrate" its limiting for carpeting plants, and or moving plants around frequently if you propegate....but it certainly is a workable method

I didn't know before a month or two ago... and i felt like it gets misused or under utilized, but for making tiered scapes, nursery tanks with things being moved, or just carpeting scapes, its the best out there in my opinion... all the top aquascapers use some form of it... without exception on ADAs 100 best list annually ( there are a dozen varieties and brands, but pelletized soil is the constant)

I've used half an inch of Nutra base by Colombo, mixed with 1 and a half inch of aqua soil, 2 inches all together. Used flourish root tabs pushed into the mix. I have then capped it with 1 inches of children's play sand, 3 inches all together. My tank is absolutely flourishing. I've had no algae issues, no outbreaks of disease, and it is completely stable in water parameters. Its growing hairgrass in low light conditions. I have bloody Mary shrimp and blue jelly shrimp in there, and crossbreeding the population is exploding. The tank has been set up for 4 months. When the tank evaporates 2in of water, I just top the tank off to the original level. No big water changes are the key. No drama, no fuss. It just does its thing 😂

This is an outstanding summary of the various substrate methods. There are a fantastic number of options that may be best for your own goals - whether they be to breed fish or maintain a large bioload (where the plants and substrate serve the fish), or a planted garden where the fish are secondary and serve the plants.

This is really interesting. I just planted my first tank (11.6g). With pea puffers! I used stratum and capped it with gravel and sand. I didn't know a lot of what you're talking about here. I have hundreds of houseplants, but this is my first experience with aquatic plants. I set it up and did 3 water changes before adding the fish. This was on the advice of my fish person at the store. It's quite amazing how the levels have stayed in range since I added the puffers. My sciencey brain loves this stuff lol.

It IS Very pricey...i agree. For an aquascape, singular show-tank or community centerpiece, i think it's worth it. If you breed and keep like 10+ tanks, like myself...then it's far too pricey and i use various other sunstrates

I like to do layers. Similar to FF method, but with with some aquasoil and active base layer. In my last tank I used layer of pond compost, Dennerle base layer, Japanese aquasoil and gravel. Several months later I'm seeing some algae buildup, so I'll probably add light layer of sand. Both aquasoil substrates have capping effect to a degree.

I went with father fish deep substrate method. I used ADA power sand at the bottom with ADA Amazonia aqua soil on top. In addition to this I added charcoal pieces, recharge mycelium mixture, 50 iron supplemented red clay balls, and father fish soil additive all mixed into aqua soil. I then topped it with black sand. I am happy with the results of my tank and all of my plants are fine. No big algae blooms. I only have one fish and a load of snails in it right now. 55 gallon with one sponge filter and an air stone. Been a month looks good. I'll add a CO2 generator permanently, probably when I fully stock the tank. In addition to this i have 80 tourmaline and maifanitum supplemented balls for shrimp next to my sponge filter to promote good bacteria and filter heavy metals.

Hmm I grabbed a bucket of mud from a creek and dropped that in my tank, along with 2 inches of sand cap. 2 years later everything going strong only cleaned my sponge once and everything is thriving. Just make sure you have enough fish to replenish the substrate I would have spent over $100 if I were to track down every ingredient.

I just started this hobby, i put inch and half of potting soil mixed with blood bone fertilizer. Capped with an inch of play sand, pebbles and grit stones. Planted, but need more. Some "Father fish" leaves and pond water. My Platies love it, wizzing around, already 3 babies. Gases occasionally bubbling from the soil. The fish only fed every other day with a pinch, but see them constantly hunting something in the water and nibbling surfaces, fascinating.

Did you use the little pellets it came with... there are now 2 types...an active one, and an inactive one with root tabs essentially. But if you aren't using high lights, ferts or co2 ... you very well may not unlock the value of ADA or active substrates...as plants need all pieces of growth and stability pyramid in place equally.

This is really cool! Maybe I will splurge on aquasoil in my next planted tank. Also, this video has eased my mind about my tank acidifying, because I was freaking out a little bit. I used aquatic potting mix, that's made for pond plants, and probably about a cup of Seachem flourite, which I bought because I thought it was for planted tanks and then when I got it I was confused because it just looks like gravel. lol Probably putting a little in there turned out to be a good idea, anyway. I'm glad I used quartz sand to cap, since I didn't really know what I was doing. At least it is not adding or taking anything away. I think I need to be patient. I have learned so much from your channel. I know I had my lights on too long and too high, and I was overfeeding my fish, but I am being more disciplined about all that now. I can already see a difference in my water, and algae growth.

I moved from FF DSS tanks to sand capped aqua soil about a year ago and really like the results. I have swords that completely stalled in dirted tanks that bounced back and quadrupled in size after being replanted in capped aqua soil tanks. I credit your past information for moving to aqua soil. Now I’m eager to try straight aqua soil without a cap. Can’t afford it at the moment but as soon as the worm turns that’s my next project! Thanks for all your help! You’re my go-to source for all things aquatic.

@@Fishtory you are correct, some of the plants did good. Water wisteria for instance just exploded but the swords in particular really stunted. When I pulled them the roots looked terrible. The other thing I really enjoy about the aqua soil is no burping substrate. It’s just the better overall method for me but if cost is a hindrance the FF method is certainly a viable alternative. I feel fortunate that I moved in early may and had the resources for aqua soil.

Ive been doing a ton of research on the soil food web etc and it's going to be fun to see how it works out in the aquatic sphere (which as you know is damn poorly studied) I'd just like to add that the plants rhizosphere also puts oxygen down in the root zone for bacteria to thrive on. Also for "charging' a substrate, I'd definitely think making a compost extract/tea and bubbling those two together could give interesting results! A biocomplete compost that is, also do you have any experience/research on biochar for a fish tank?

Indeed a friend of mine owns a company called aquachar that uses small dense wood limbs and carbonizes them while injecting some of the essential minerals plants need. They use it as filter media, to filter meds out of water, grow beneficial bacteria AND soak it with fertz to create rich substrates over time i think "Alex10" is a discount code i had with them if you wanted to check it out. Also, id love to hear an update on your uni projects! Please keep in touch, my friend .cheers!

Great informational video. However, I would argue that soil capped with sand is still king because of the price point per gallon depending on tank size. Aquasoil is great for anything smaller than maybe a 40 breeder, but you work your way to say a 125g (From my experience) you are spending $500-$1k on substrate... I've used both and honestly cannot tell the difference in plant growth. One downfall with soil is the soil getting loose above the cap over time, but I've found to fix that you can just put your soil in filter bags and then cap all the filter bags with sand. The roots still make their way into the filter bags. All that being said... If aquasoil was ever as cheap as organic soil, id use the aquasoil. Until then, soil wins me over personally.

Thank you! This will come in handy. Personally it also made me realize I really want fine particle size quartz sand either as cap, or somewhere as an additive because I really like the look of the "grimy looking diatoms". When I look in natural bodies of water in Sweden, that's what I see. It feels right, and it's excellent food for algae eaters anyway (and oddly satisfying to watch my snails eat lumps or strings of them like a vacuum cleaner - amazing how fast they can eat)! If I get a spike in nitrogen it should tell me very visibly. BTW, have you ever tried using bentonite as a flocculant in an aquarium? My cat litter brand is supposedly made from unscented "white natural bentonite" (calcium based), would be kinda funny if it worked as flocculant + adding a bit more calcium to my soft water. Asking as the aqua soil pellets made me think of those bentonite grains in cat litter.
@Fishtory
@Fishtory 11 месяцев назад
Yes! So the ash from mount Aso is diatomaceous earth ( aka bentonite ( the difference being it containts silca with magnesium and iron and diatomaceous earth is general silacates and trace minerals of any sort.) But that's why they use it as well. To what extent it works, seems to depend on the ph and additives people add to the water colum as well. Thanks for writing!

Very good in depth video on substrate 👍 Ive done dirt tanks in the past and explored using seachem flourite black,fluval stratum and the micro version, and eco complete, haven't had the money or convenience to try ADA. I found eventually i got annoyed with dirt and rescaping or adding plants, while yes its cheaper and more convenient it has its down sides, flourite i had good sucess in high light tanks prettty sure its active, needs a insane amount of washing super annoying eco complete similar but a bit better more pricy and less messy to rinse i didn't like the color much though.Fluval stratum is very versitile for me it can keep my future caradina shrimp tanks stable in parameters ive used it before with them and had a colony for years.its very clean i just lightly rinsed it and in a day or two 100% clear water, works great in a low light and high light tank but with higher lights i would dose a all in one fert with some extra ferts if needed for deficiencies. It took me 2-3 months for my plant roots to stabilize and take off during that 2-3 month time it was growing but slowly but thats when it started blowing up now its 6-7 months and growth is fast and insane, i also added a diy co2 system during that time too so that helped i do have a real co2 setup just to lazy to buy a co2 tank and get it filled up.

This is an absolute must watch video. I love these indepth videos. Great research and explanation break-down Alex. I'm glad you got to hook up with Tom Barr about the inner workings and the how and why of these aquatic soils. This is a topic I have been interested in for many years. It is actually amazing that we as hobbyists can keep aquatic plants and fish from many diverse locales together in the same aquarium with any amount of success. As hobbyists, we want to make our aquatic pet homes as comfortable as possible for them and indepth knowledge of how our aquatic chemicals interact, function and balance out are imperative to a healthy long-lived life for our wetpets and aquatic plants. I do have 2 questions: #1when our aquasoil gets depleted, can we recharge it or is it too broken down to function? #2 Has anyone measured the amount of ammonia etc in an aquasoil pellet after the aquarium has tested to be fish safe (after the initial flooding & dissipation of ammonia into the water and the weeks of waiting)? An idea for a video or short is on the differences between absorption and adsorption with visuals.
@Fishtory
@Fishtory 10 месяцев назад
Whoa thanks for your feedback and video ideas first off. Secondly, thanks for tuning in- as always my friend 🙂 ! So once the aquasoil breaks down, it becomes silt with some trace mineral content...it actually settles into a contiguous layer of silt that acts as a muddy cap between layers....which you can choose to simply add more substrate to...maybe an inch or two. ....and below the silt, it becomes a low oxygen environment and nitrates get turned into ammonia by annoxic bacteria. Whereas, the plant roots can feed directly from the sequestered ammonia... and nitrous oxide, methane, sulphur hydroxide and co/co2 are by product gasses as the substrate is totslly broken down by bacteria and archaea. Q#2: has the ammonia been measured? Yes, and it is actively and continually being absorbed and sequestered in any pellet with a 1mm thick exterior layer thats porous and a dense core with a clay or diatomaceous earth /Ash / Clay center. But if crushed, after being matured, most all aquasoils... they will release ammonia and trace amounts of nitrites and nitrates however i cant find the paper off hand... that showed how much in the main brands...ill keep locking. But the graph of Bacteria Colonization / and how much time it takes for ammonia to infiltrate the material is a gradual process that then turns exponential at 6 months for the 6 to 8mm sized pellets ... spiking 3 or 4 x what it has been at 3 or 4 months, then after the 6 months its a plateaus of stabilized ammonia and ammonium
@chevyfish4028
