By frying the rubber in bubble gum you essentially turned it into Tupperware plastic.

Modern chewing gum is made using polyisobutylene, a polymer that melts at 55°C. When you drop it into 170°C oil, it's going to unavoidably melt, and probably release all sorts of toxic chemicals.

It's a bit comforting that it just dissolves. My stomach isn't filled with scaldingly hot oil, but surely it's not filled with remains of chewing gum i accidentally swallowed as a kid.

Sometimes after eating nuts or other fatty food I'll chew gum and it just disintegrates. So I think both the heat and fat are working against this.

I actually knew this would happen. Back in the day, I tried melting gum to see what would happen because I was chewing this piece of gum for a few days. After a certain point, gum will just taste like nothing and lose all elasticity. And melting it tastes absolutely bizarre and feels like chewy liquid slime with the most bland of flavours. Also, freezing chewed gum has a really nice texture until it melts and becomes weird.
