Simon is awesome .. I never imagined him in Purple .. I had listened to him in his solo career and he blew my brain .. great playing ! He has that magic .. like Blackore and Gary Moore .. a sort of an updated Old School playing. Hoping the best for Steve Morse and family 🙏💜
I blew out several sets of speakers listing o this song! They still go it & I am 72 yrs old & loved them when I was young & now as I am old. They make music that lasts!!!
Me too. My speakers couldn't handle Made In Japan. I am 61. I was 9 when I bought In Rock. My sister had the 45 of Hush. So I thought this can't be bad. Brought it home and the first thing I hear is Speed King. It was like nothing I ever heard. Purple has always been my #1 since that moment in 1970. In Rock is still my favorite Studio Album.
I'm 67 years young and still shake the windows in my house playing DP. There was always something special about each album they produced. Made in Japan has to be one of the best live albums of all time. But from Machine Head to Fireball to Slaves and Masters, etc. this band always gave us awesome stuff. Who Do We Think We Are is one of my favorites. Excuse me while I go put this one on and rock the house !!!
I approve of this new official guitar player. Exciting licks, great feeakin amazing tone, and as someone pointed out, Blackmore vibes but without getting into his style. Here’s to many, many more Deep Purple years!!!
Still remember getting this album home as a 10 yr old.... listening to it, telling myself smoke on the water is cool, but Lazy...is the kick ass song on the album by far....
the guitar guy knows his stuff, definitely! Personally i appreciate he gets some parts of the original studio solo and he develops his ideas from there, sounds like he's paying his respects to Ritchie. Amazing how old are these guys on stage! Generally speaking men at that age are sitting in a bar drinking wine and talking about good old times, but they are still on stage.... I can't say if that's amazing or if it's time to retire..... don't know what I'd do if it was me. My best wishes to Steve Morse and his wife, you did the right call Steve.
Blackmore is DP, and DP is Blackmore.
Reading some of the comments here, I would like to add my thoughts (if I may). Yes, Simon McBride is an excellent guitarist and a good replacement for Steve Morse. I think what gets most people's approval (aside of his skill) is how Simon's gear has a very similar tone to Richie's Deep Purple gear. You can definitely feel that. But as far as a "better" or more "apt" replacement for Steve.... I would add that Deep Purple, themselves chose Steve. They could have picked just about anyone; but they wanted Steve for who he is. Not only as a virtuoso on guitar, but I mean the man has practically written 19 albums (not counting what he has written with Kansas and Deep Purple). He also does things that a keyboardist does and a guitar shouldn't be able to do . And he is the man who put the one-note per string (alternate picking) on the map. He plays Classical and has a wide range of style incorporation. I believe that Deep Purple knows better than anyone else who would fit in the band. And Steve was their pick after Richie; and that alone says something. Of course, Simon is doing a superb job and will keep Purple going . Just my perspective. :)
I think Steve was a horrible replacement for Ritchie. My guess is they chose Steve in part to spite Ritchie. Ritchie said in a Guitar Magazine interview that the one guy that is so great, he can't figure out what he does is Steve Morse. I believe the guys probably took note of that. But that comment praising Steve from Ritchie Blackmore didn't mean that the guy was a good fit for DP.
@@flazjsg I appreciate your comment, flazjsg; but do you think that Deep Purple would risk they reputation and standing in picking Morse just to spite Morse?
@@georgemixis2172 You mean to spite Blackmore? I don't know. I agree with you - that it wouldn't make sense. But given the Blackmore was such a force in DP, I'm sure his endorsement of Morse as a fantastic player would have a lot of weight in the opinions of the other guys. I don't know how anyone with an open mind could listen to SM and think he was a good DP replacement. Unless you completely wanted to change the band's sound. The weird thing is that if you listen to Steve historically, he shines brightest on country-fusion music. What I don't like about his playing is that he never seemed to reach past the level of "conscious competence." He can't just let go and let himself play, which is the "unconscious competence" level that the true greats all seem to be able to summons up. His playing to me is completely predictable and without much feeling. And I do appreciate his command of the instrument - I saw him live in a club in the 1980s and he blew everyone away with his capabilities. He can play all styles well. He never had a hit with Kansas. His solo stuff as well as Dregs material is completely forgettable. He's not good at coming up with signature licks to build songs on. He's also very derivative. I couldn't believe he added medleys of other classic rock acts to DP sets! DP is a classic great band. Why on earth would they want to start doing tributes to their peers. It just shows people that S. Morse sees himself more as a fan than one of the peers to the other greats.
@@flazjsg No, I do not believe that DP hired Steve to spite Blackmore. First of all, there is only one Blackmore. No one could exactly fill his shoes; especially when one considers all of his creative contributions to DP. The band would not have been quite the same without the creative aspect of each musician. At the time they hired Morse, Steve was a very coveted and in demand guitarist. Steve's writing is different from DP's, so speaking for myself, I don't know how well they would have meshed with the established songwriting of the band... as with all things, if Steve would have joined in the late 70's - early 80's they would have evolved in another unique direction and although they would still have been "Deep Purple", it just would have been different since a different contributor would have existed. Steve did not need Purple, he was already established. I just tend to believe that they were impressed with his skills and they wanted him. Would be a good question to have asked Lord; since I believe he was the main thrust to get Morse into the band. Plus, Steve gets along with everybody... unfortunately Blackmore and Gillian had their rough moments. I disagree with you, however that Morse's work with Dregs is forgettable. His variety, and ability to not be another "4-chord rocker" puts him on another level. Have you listened to "What If"? Nice variety, and very unlimited chord progressions. In the end, I suppose one's preference can dictate our decisions; but I appreciate you taking time to share your thoughts! Oh, in case you haven't heard, you should check out Morse's "Simple Simon" . I think you might appreciate the live version, so if it's ok, I will leave it here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-wFw9eYy-v3I.html take care!
As in many songs of Deep Purple guitar and organ go together while drums and bass do similar in parallel. Great concert and thank god I was there finally in Istanbul.
@@erpringleI know right? He's standing on the shoulders of giants but he is great at it, Ritchie Blackmore is one of my first guitar heroes, I saw DP once with Steve Morse and it was great and also a bit of a surprise because the whole band was firing on all cylinders but I would love to see them with Simon.
Deep Purple !!!! Forever our beloved legend !! I hope you will perform with us for a long time to come! I heard you were in Istanbul, beautiful! I am grateful to you even for the strumming of guitars, you are the best of the best! I wish the whole band a lot of health and concerts. With love, Zdenek 🙏👌👌👌👌♥️♥️🇸🇰🇸🇰
Simon is a great replacement. I understand some people don't see Steve Morse as a good fit in Deep Purple, but you really need to listen to their recent catalog of original music. The band has been having a great time writing new music together...I hope they can continue when Steve's wife gets a clean bill of health. Best wishes to the family!
Steve Morse is a true innovator in his own right. He never was or will be a Ritchie impersonator. Love Morse era Purple. Seems like the stubborn fans who want Ritchie, have the same temperament as Ritchie. I still listen to early Purple. I also have all the Morse albums as well.
@@fredandpattychandler4130 I haven't heard every original album from the 2000s yet, but I will eventually. Like them all, especially WHA?, INFINITE and PURPENDICULAR. Need to listen to SM Band, love Dregs as well!
@@wurm90125 I agree. Simon McBride is absolutely stellar. Morse is great too, one of the best. But so is this guy. Morse will always sound like Morse. He's just got that sort of style. McBride is much more adaptable to the vibe Blackmore set down with classic era purple.
I agree that comparing him to Morse over Blackmore in that context. He picks every note with flawless crossover picking, similar phrasing to Morse. Ritchie was/is more working off of his left hand. Trills pull offs etc. this guy also plays humbuckers and gets the punch and clarity of single coils. He’s really really good.
LOL backing bad? , Don was hand picked by Jon Lord, and Simon was hand picked by Steve Morse, while he cares for his wife!... the chemistry of the current 5 of Morse, Glover, Gillan, Airey and Paice is unmatched and is the longest incarnation of all Deep Purple line ups. I do like Simon as a fill in though
I first heard this composition in 1979 performed by local guys on the dance floor of our county town. They also made some kind of insert from polka there. Even then, this music fascinated with its unusualness and impact. Our musicians have become top musicians in the country. But the time was different and there were other possibilities.
That's one amazing performance! I really wish to be there!!! Maybe able to catch the next one hopefully! Wow, True Legends! I am so glad they showed how you make and play .... MUSIC ;)
I've been a Deep Purple fan since 1970. This is the first time I've heard of Simone McBride. He's the best fit for the band since Richie's heyday. Steve is good but his style just does work with these guys. Just my opinion.
I never understood Steve Morse in Deep Purple... But this guy... whoever he is... is actually playing the RIFFS! Obviously with a real appreciation for Richie Blackmore... Yea! Damn! It's good to hear! Been way to long... Steve Morse sounds better doing his own thing... which is awesome too.
Yes, I agree with you. At Steve Morse, the guitar is always squeaking and howling; he doesn't can the handwork of playing guitar and he never had any feeling of hard rock, rhytmn and blues. It were lost years for Gillan, Paice and Glover ... and for Lord.
@@haegar1402 deep purple is too big for him, evenSatriani found out that he cannot compete with Ritchie.being creative is important, since he joint the band they make boring songs.for him is the right place ,but when you see Depp purple with Ritchie then you will miss the best influence of Rock music.
Gillan, Glover, Paice. 3 of 5 from the definitive lineup. Airey a phenomenal keyboard player continuing on from Jon. And now with Simon , I think this sounds like the Purple we all know and love. Simply awesome.
Hope Steve's wife is doing as well as possible during this difficult time. Steve breathed life into Purple almost a quarter of a century ago and helped make DP one of the greatest long-running bands in history. More relevant than almost all other "classic bands." Had no idea who Simon was -- but WOW! He is brilliant. I read somewhere where he was worried how Richie or others might feel about his playing. All I can say is the fans can recognize greatness, and Simon definitely has it in spades.
Unfortunatly we don't hear loud enouph Ian Gillan when he sing here but what a great job on one of the best song from DP , thanx to publish here , i love Deep for 50 years
I remember first seeing Simon on a local TV talent show here in Northern Ireland many years ago when he was a young teenager . Simon played a Joe Satriani song ( 'Satch Boogie' I believe) flawlessly. I knew that he would go on to big things and so it has proved !
I've never seen this guitar player before but he's really excellent! Praying for a full recovery for Steve Morse's wife and the best to Steve and his family🙏
While I agree that Simon is a much better fit for the MKII material, I'm not sure if would write DP material as good as Morse, and replacing Steve while his family is going through this hardship would be extremely cruel.
I love how McBride keeps signature sections of the iconic solos butbthen adds his style and modernization. It's a fantastic hybrid that works seriously well. I'm a fan for sure
That organ solo intro sounded just like Kieth Emerson! But Don has always been a more prog leaning keyboardist than Jon Lord so it's no surprise really!
This guitar player is awesome! At first, I was thinking "Wait, a Les Paul...in Purple?" Then this guy commenced to win me over. Maybe they should record with this guy?
I could be wrong but Simon McBride usually uses a PRS, not a Les Paul. The PRS can coil tap to sound more like a Strat, and also has the whammy bar, so better for sounding like Richie.
