nice video! i got a really fat deer this season and saved the fat to make tallow. i rendered it in a pressure cooker for about 3 hrs and strained out the meat and other stuff and then added cinnamon and pressure cooked again and stained again and set out side to cool and got a big piece of cinnamon scented tallow. candles smell good and i keep some in liquid form on my wood boiler for my hands and skin.

My thoughts- Without a metal container, their are a few options to utilize fat (the first one not rendered for long term storage. 1. For oiling bows, arrows, and steel implements, take the washed and cleaned raw fat and rub it into the wood, than heat it up over the coals to drive it in. For knives simply coat the blade in the fat. This is for quick usage. 2. Prepare a birchbark container sealed with pine pitch or a rawhide pouch, than make a coal burned container, add a thin layer of water, add the fat, and then throw in a few red hot stones slowly over a period of time to melt the fat down. OR boil water with the stones and the fat until the oil goes to the surface. Strain and store in the birch bark container or rawhide pouch. 3. Prepare well made fired clay containers and simply melt it down in that over the coals. Thanks for posting this video. My mind is always searching for primitive ways of doing things. You won’t always have the luxury of a metal pot and tallow is amazing for bows and lubricating knives. I think the coal burned container method would work although theirs a risk the stones could burn the fat😜

Interesting. Rendered fat will stay if the conditions are right, but many people make Tallow to use it. Rendering Tallow over an open fire is easy. Stick it on the end of a stick and watch it melt...just collect it in a vessel. I wrap Tallow in two host hides and it stays fresh and spoilage free. Again I make it and use it. I use more than most. I don’t make it for fun but rather as a resource for my regular use. Thanks for the comments.

This deserves far more comments that the measly 18 at the time I made this one... after 4 years. Even if you're never going to do any of this, he's showing you how you managed to be here.

It probably works well to keep a carbon steel knife in good shape too. Like bees wax does. Heat the blade until it turns blue or purple but not glowing orange and rub the bees wax on the blade and let it cool naturally. It won’t change the tempering or the hardness of the blade but will stop it from rusting, at least for several months. I imagine tallow could work similarly.

Thanks for posting this video. I was looking for a way to use the tallow for cooking. I know it is waxy and rancid at first but I thought if cooked down and strained twice it might change the chemical structue for the better.
