I just started listening to poetry for school assignment and im really enjoying it alot of it speaks the truth and its really entertaining its helps me get a better and open view about how the world is and its something im looking forward into for a long Time
Fusing cultural satire addressing stereotypes, media (Shopping channel concept) emeshed with a nod to a historical travesty in the USA (slave auctions). BRILLIANT ART!
Oh. My. Gosh. My freshman lit teacher in college got me into this series. I'm tempted to write her a letter in thanks. Shihan's right up there with Deb Young, Taylor Mali and Rafael Casal. Amazing.
Hahaha... the sarcasm was much appreciated. I loved the mockery of today's african american poet on some Nas tip. It reminds me if "I know I can" when he spoke about greeks and romans. Two thumbs up!
Shihan made MANY points in this poem...he talked about how a lot of black men leave themselves in ignorance and talk about things that they dont know the entire truth about....he talked about how little black men know about what women want...how black men dont know how 2 be men and only boys....but OVER ALL....the way he designed the poem with the whole "auction network"...is...we as black men arent representing ourselves as good as we could to be accepted. WE MUST CHANGE.
That "meaningful poem" hit me hard. Back in the day I would only date the 5 percenters (look it up) and dudes... they catch on and upgrade themselves like AIM so they memorize the "Daily Mathematics" ( peace to the god and the earth blah blah blah) and approach you with it like game.. I've learned my lesson.
i deleted my comments several times trying to find a word that describes this guy...and i couldn't because i would have to use so many words. genius. i hope that encompasses everything.
I thought I was going to feel nauseous at the onset of the gangster I'm a bad angry ghetto man victim of the white man, got the money, got the bitch, got the car theme. Then the wait was worth the message from this young mans vocabulary, because he made a connect that was both comical and serious as anything that is real. Bravo!
i found this to be intriguing bcuz it is not about racism, it is about blacks or people who give lower standardsto themselves and how society sees blacks bcuz some blacks do not take the initiative to do better when our ancestors and others who wanted justice paved the streets with their innocent blood just so the world could become a liberal and equal place.
i think the meaning is to show that thugs sell and to show how sterotypes come about and about how we as blacks sell ourselves and sell ourselves short
Nekro means Corpse in Greek. The Greeks buried their dead in a Nekropolis (city of corpses), what we call a Cementary. Think about that..CEMENT ary. Cement, meaning not moving seditary, stagnant, solid concrete. Nekro turned into the latin word Necro. Porteguese slave traders had a dilema...
@AdeerAxmed I was conflicted when I wrote it but the fact remains each person is accountable for their own and we are the only race that seems to be judged as a monolithic group. And since we live in an image based society we need to be more responsible with what we project. no one forces the people I'm talking about to do what they do
I've been studying up on Asian culture coz I'm going their next and want to know how they feel about African descent people in general. But what I've been seeing is that they love the stereotypical black person and even have parodies. Like how we often have FOB Asians with thick accents who are super nerdy in our movies and shows, they actually paint their faces and talk about watermelon, kool-aid and chicken. And I really dont blame them because this is all they see. But that's not all we are!
Yes. yes that is EXACTLY what I was saying. Not only do you read between the lines, you place entire novellas there! I never said I wasn't an idiot. However, being an idiot does not stop me from being right. :)
No this is not satirical. He was at Howard University Poetry Cypher and said that he images he and his daughter saw on television glorifying us to other countries was the inspiration for this piece. The negative images of us that are transmitted to other countries and they think these images are us.
We do glorify stereotypical food choices. I remember my korean friend online talking about Dave Chappelle's grape drink thing. But the thing about 'they' in Asian culture is that the entire United States is they to them. Though we may be divided they see us mostly as one. So there are several negative stereotypes at play in not only black media but in the main media ie white media.
Hey Mr. or Mrs. "I take everything literally," learn to notice when someone is poking sarcastic fun. I was mocking the fact that A$AP often calls himself "pretty." Context clues can be your friend sometimes.
Okay, I take back my defense of stereotypical food choices but the fact that other countries are so willing to just take the surface of any race and apply what they know from entertainers to a whole group of people still shows that there is a long way to go for people to truly know each other's cultures and respect them.
They (the slave traders) wanted to bring the slaves onto christian land, but they didn't want any heathens on the land without being baptised first fearing they might incur the wrath of GOd. So they had Bishops stand at the foot of slave ships, sprinkling water on slaves as they would pass by to baptise them. The dilema then became, How can we now in good faith enslave our christian brethern. So they took the matter to the Pope..the religious authrity at that time.
Was he calling out Nas? When he talked about Niggas trying to act positive, the "we're royalty, we were all kings and queens before..." sounds like the words from Nas's song...
