Jeff Minter (Obsessed with Sheeps, Goats, Camels and you guessed it Lamas) from LlamaSoft was one of the main coders for Defender2000, well none for his psychedelic, trippy tube shooter (Jaguar/Tempest2K,NUON/T3K, AtariBox/T4K, PSvita/TxK) he love to incorporate 'Beasties' as he calls them, in to his games if he can. The limited edition 2 game cart coming to the Jaguar soon via AtariAge looks INCREDIBLE! Llamatron2112 and AtackOfTheMutantCamels brilliant games takes me back to 1986-C64 crazy, loved it! MJ
Fun facts: Jeff Minter was actually forced to make the ship bigger in 2000 mode at the request of the game's producer, John Skruch. The humans in 2000 mode are actually stop-motion models and NOT pre-rendered sprites. Lasty, the game was actually planned for CD, with a butload of planned features such as a interview with Eugene Jarvis. Sadly, this planned version was canned and the only thing that has survived of the planned CD version in the Kick-ass OST (which you can listen now on YT!).
My understanding of the sheep is that Jeff Minter had pet sheep... And llama's. And he loved these animals so much he named his development studio after them and worked them into his games. In an interview, he said he wanted to make a game called "Super Llamatron" for the Jaguar. I think this obsession with fluffy herd animals was just Jeff Minter. I'm betting the rest of Atari was probably a little freaked out by it but gave it a pass because Tempest 2000 was so good.
David Ex still making incredible games! Polybius on the PS4 was one of 2017’s best games. He also made TxK for the Vita a few years back and the insanely amazing Space Giraffe on X Box live and Steam. He’s quite prolific on Twitter and is currently working on Tempest 4000 for the PS4. (He also made about 6 amazing games for iOS under the Minotaur Project banner. Sadly he pulled them as he ended up actually losing money.) Atari Age have just announced Jeff Minter classics cart for the Jag. This features Llamatron and Revenge of the Mutant Camels- two classics from the 80s. Jeff Minter is a video game GOD.
Just found your channel. Really digging your style, and I love that you use real hardware. I gotta' say, I still wanna' try this game. I can't help myself. It looks warped as Hell.
Jeff Minter is the mastermind behind these classic games. Total psych head, master programmer and sheep farmer. Anytime you have a game with llamas or sheep in them, especially fast paced shit hard, psychedelic shooters, you can bet your ass it`s a Minter production. Check out Llamasoft and you`ll get the idea,
You are aware of Mr. Jeff Minter's obsession with sheep, yes? Anyway, well done beating the game! I've never been able to do it. I knew about the Plasma Pong Easter egg but not the sheep Defender Plus. This is one of my favourite Jaguar games even though the difficulty can be brutal on all three of the games.
I got excited to watch, back-to-back, your reviews of Defender and Protector for the Jaguar. Saddened to discover you have not reviewed Protector. Any plans to? Hopefully!
I've looked at comparison videos and I honestly think this game has the best version of Classic Defender out of any of them. Only thing on an equal level with it is the arcade version itself, and I kind of prefer the Jaguar version even to that because the colors seem more vibrant/saturated in the Jaguar version and I like that the sprites are a little bigger.
Glad this isn't the last review. Hoping to see me some Skyhammer so I can figure out how to actually play it and beat a mission and towers 2 so no I can get past the first few minutes of it.
Watching your videos again. You and I seem to have similar tastes in video games so I value your second opinion. Hope to see more Homebrew reviews. :) \\//,
I also just found your channel, and love these reviews, I almost have a complete sealed official release Jaguar collection, this game, Rayman and Atari Karts is all I need to have all the official Jag releases. Good video and keep the reviews coming!
KC - PLEASE tell me your going to get the Llamasoft double cart and Xenon2 from AtariAge? Hope you do, cant wait for a review of them, spoke to Albert from AAge today and mines on route, Xenon2 the best BitMapBrothers/Amiga/ST game/shooter ever!!
I would've played this game on the PT emulator because it ran flawlessy except it kept visually bugging at the bottom half of the screen, guess I'll keep sticking to the laggy Pheonix Emulator for this one
I have never had any trouble with flashing colors in games, but the footage of the Plus mode has made me physically ill. Overall though, this looks like some shareware DOS game you'd download from a BBS circa 1994.
Hehehe, no, not that kind. More like the weird garbage you'd find on one of those "20,000 Great Games!" compilation CDs. Come to think of it, that's how most Jag-exclusive games feel like for some reason.
@CPS2 Only the true connoisseurs such as yourself could've possibly have come in contact with console gaming greatness that was Atari Jaguar. How could anyone else fathom the magnificence of masterpieces such as Trevor McFur in the Crescent Galaxy and Double Dragon V, or a port of Doom missing half of its textures and all of the music, or the splendor of Skyhammer struggling to run above 10 fps? I collected jag games since the late 90s. At one point owned most of them, including a few "holy grails" like Towers II, Skyhammer and Iron Soldier II. One has to have some pretty massive fanboy blinders on not to see just how week the system's library was, compared to even its 16-bit rivals.
Jeff screwed this one up, appreciate he had family issues and Atari moved it from CD to cartridge, but Protector is the far better title on the system and i would take SNES Super Dropzone over this. Jeff couldn't do Defender justice on the ST and Amiga with Defender II and bringing weapons etc from that over to Defender 2K? 😭
I was so disappointed with this game. It had such nice graphics and sound, but I agree with all your complaints and I'll throw in that dark enemies over dark backgrounds make it hard to even see some of them. Most of the time, I don't even see what kills me. Plus, it bugs me that it degenerates into me focusing on avoiding the enemies while the AI weapons take out the enemies for me. But it's so hectic, that's about all I can do. I kind of enjoy playing the first 20 levels, but I've never really been tempted to even try to go further. As far as getting a update to Defender, thank god for Protector. It may not wow anyone with it's graphics and sound, but it plays so much better.
Yeah, and I actually like Defender Plus. And I'll occasionally run through the first 20 levels of 2000 and get some enjoyment out of it. I'd be lying if I said I didn't feel some buyer's regret back in 1996, but there's enough there that I found the game worth keeping. That's more than I can say for I-War.
I’ve never seen this version before but it takes about 5 seconds to see it’s not a direct port! The reviewer has obviously never played arcade defender.
The real hardware is the Sheep's Butt!! I hate reviews that use emulators. What's the point. Anyway....Excellent! Minter has been using Sheep and Camels since attack of the mutant camels ah,,,, way back. Like 8 bit machines. Notice the "Minter" level in BS and BSG.
Without looking at your details, but after watching almost all of your Jaguar reviews over the last couple of days , and enjoying and agreeing with *most* them, I'm pretty sure your accent is American...maybe Canadian. Why do I bring this up at all? Because through every single review you pronounce the Jaguar as JAG-WIRE. And though the British claim the true proper pronunciation with JAG-YOU-ARE, even the true American English pronunciation is JAG-WOAR with the WOAR pronuonced like CAR or STAR, which I only spelled that way instead of WAR since that is pronounce WOR, in, I believe both American and British English...where do you come from or where did you ever pick up JAG-WIRE?!? Another Good review I agree with though, even though I have picked on you in several of these video comments, Over all I love your style and your sensibilities are like mine for the most part, even with some games that are generally considered terrible, and you and I disagree. There are a few, however, that I am blown away because your review of a game was exactly opposite of what I expect from you or think about it myself...I'm loving it though! I will start checking out reviews you have for other systems now, that I have also...or, I would, but apparently the only other system you have in your play list that I have is the 3DO, and I'm not interested in the few items you reviewed so far (at least not interested in a review of interactive porn or what ever) You need to get some 3DO games! Want me to recommend my top 10? I agree with better than half of your top-ten Jag list!
I talk to the jag wire a little in my Zoop review but I'm better now and say it right. I hope all you European viewers change to way you say it to. You can still say the car is jagyouar 😀
This game is terrible. The scaling is all off on the newer versions. There is no room and the ship is so big. The original was is ok but the other ones aren't good at all.
