They’re known for having amp issues. It’s well documented on all of the HiFi forums. I have a pair of BP-7004s that I bought back in 2009 and have already had both amps replaced. One of my speakers just started acting up again yesterday so I called definitive technology to see if I can get a replacement amp. Completely different experience this time than when I called to have them replaced before. The first time my call went to someone stateside who knew a lot about home audio and was very quick and helpful determining the issue and shipping out my replacement amps. ($90 apiece). The person I just talked to this morning sounded like they were in a call center on the other side of the world who just read off a script and had no clue about home audio setups. In the end we determined my amp is bad and she informed me they no longer carry them and it will cost me $300 to send them off to be repaired. No thanks I’ll just find a speaker company that actually makes a speaker that lasts without having to be fixed every couple of years. What’s sad is they sound amazing when they work but I refuse to keep giving a company money that keeps making faulty products as I’m tracking the 8000 and 9000 powered towers have the same issues with amp failure.
Over 14 years ago picked up the BP7001's....BP7002's & BP7006's paired with CLR3000 / CLR2300 & CLR2000 w/ Studio Monitors 450 & 350..........they are still kicking ass!
its a premium experience from the minute you open the box, to the first tunes you hear of these speakers, Im proud to be part of the def tech family for over 3 years now, all I experienced so far has exceeded my expectations, from customer service, to tech support, to warranty on these speakers. The aesthetics and design of these speakers adds a luxury that you cant feel or find with the competitors. since I owned these speakers I really did not have to check other brands due to the fulfillment you get with the performance of these speakers.
23 years ago, I got my BP10B and to this day this speaker has been by go to speaker. I have changed every component of my system but my def tech stays. No speaker regardless of the price range gives me the same emotional experience as my BP10. The more expensive active speakers form Def tech does not measure up to the original speaker that Sandy Gloss created. Pure perfection.
I have 4- BP7004's that I bought new back in 2009 when they were a local company here in Maryland due to the fact that they had amazing customer service and would send you replacement amps and speaker socks if needed. I had no idea that they were purchased by Sound United until I needed to replace the amps in 2 of the towers and in a Supercube as well as a ProSub 1000. I was told that they no longer offer replacement amps so now I have some really nice doorstops. 1 of the 2 remaining towers is now humming so I am going to have a nice 3rd doorstop. I have looked high and low for replacement amps for the towers but have not been able to find anything. The 2 subs weren't very good when they did work so I have not pursued replacement amps for those but the towers sounded pretty good so I would really like to get replacement amps for them. It's really too bad that this company dropped the customer service experience that they once had and the replacement parts since the towers and subs will all need replacement amps and most people do not or cannot fix them themselves. I assume they do not offer replacement amps for the newer versions as well? If they do and you are thinking of buying them make sure to buy a few for each tower as you will need them and they probably wont offer them in the future when they are out of warranty. I would much rather the ability to replace the amps then have a nice "unboxing experience" knowing that the box and speakers will take up more space in the local dump in a few years.
I own 9040s: primary interest is 2 channel music, secondary home theater. Pros: fast break-in time, fantastic sound stage/field, immersive sound, powerful bass, clear crisp definition & wide dynamic range. For HT I have ceiling speakers for REAL Atmos sound. That top Atmos speaker is a mkt gimmick that cheapens the brand, Challenging tower placement (must place minimum 60 cms from all walls). Highly recommended for stereo and HT. BTW the bass/woofer management is a unique feature that makes works perfectly!
Slowly phasing out Polk Audios with BP9060 fronts, a BP9040 center and still polk audio surrounds, setup sounds great so far! Wouldn't mind trying some BP9080Xs.
I am on my third set of amps for my 9060s. The first two I was using the LFE and two SVS Pro 2000. I was assured by CS at Sound United it was not a problem using the LFE. The third time I have the towers set at large and am using full range. But I still had my amps go out. They would be working fine and then just stop working, then after some time they would come back to life. Maybe that’s why the new Demand series only has the bass radiators?
Does anyone know if Def Tech fixed their QC problem on the Bp9000 series with the faulty amps? I'm looking to buy 4x Bp9080x towers and I'm really hesitant due to so many people reporting this issue and having to replace parts every ~6-11months.
I bought a pair of BP10's when they first came out and still love them. 2 questions; how do the BP10 compare to the newer Def's. Also, I've read so much about Amp pairing. Does Def Tech recommend or have a list of approved vendors for Amps?
I want to buy 4x BP9080x towers just like you but I'm really scared of the amount of people with faulty amps that are experiencing issues every 6 to 11 months and having to replace their speakers. I'm expecting that a product like this lasts around a decade with proper care for the price.
@@charlestwoo huh, first I've heard of it. I've had my speakers for 2-3 years (I bought two in 2017 and two more in 2018). No issues. I initially had a large thump sound from my center CS9080 speaker but, once I got a new receiver and recalibrated everything, that issue pretty much went away, everything runs perfectly now. In my opinion? Save some extra money and invest in some warranty. That way, you can get a problematic speaker repaired or replaced

If you do not use the LFE connector for the bp towers then these towers do not have subwoofers useful for movies. Do any AVRs actually feed the full sum of the crossed over bass from your other channels and the .1 LFE through the speaker cable to your mains if you have no subwoofers? I used a minidsp-hd to use the LFE channel on my bp9060 towers despite what you are saying. I have 3 subs connected to the mini-dsp: 2 bp9060s and a SVS PC-2000 and with rew and a measurement mic I tweaked the bass for a good result. Got a pretty flat measurement from 20 hz to 120 Hz with the 3 subs (SVS subwoofer located in back corner of room and towers of course in front). To say you cannot use the LFE assumes there are no advanced users using your products. I have a Marantz sr7010. I am running the towers full range (large) and using the LFE for 7.3.2 and have the towers crossed at 100 hz and set small for 2 channel (so my svs pc-2000 is included in music).
The BP9060s have a loud posing sound every time you play a source. I red some reviews and thought they didn't set the system up properly but sure enough, my speakers also make a popping sound. I am going to return mind tomorrow and look for something else. They sound great by the way but seems to have defective amps.
excuse me an info, I wanted to buy the central channel 9080 and they told me that it is no longer in production, can you explain to me why? the new model comes out? I wonder why here in Europe it is not available from any dealer, tanks
Sound great, but noticed i def needed a sub to pair with the 8040st. Was thinking dual sealed subs to pair with 8040st and use crossover for sub to handle about 60hz and under. Actually going to do away with the 8040center speaker since my system is purely for music. Does anyone have a recomndation for sealed subsnto pair with them?

Definitely Technology has to come out with a new competitive subwoofer. The current subs just can’t compete with other subs like HSU, SVS, Monolith, etc... they don’t even come close!!!
@Gioxtream Sandy Gross left Def tech back in 2009. He then went off to start golden ear technologies one year later. Since then, he left golden ear in 2020.
I wanted to warn you that these speakers have this protective casing which is not good for those who have cats in the house, my cats climb which is a pleasure and have destroyed them, but it is possible that when you design these products you do not think that there are families with animals in the house?
