DEGANWY CASTLE 3D Reconstruction

Reconstruction of Deganwy Castle as it may have appeared around the mid 13th century. The Castle has a turbulent history and has changed hands between the English and Welsh several times.
What we find today are the remains of the building works carried out by Henry iii between 1245-54, but the castle was never finished. I have shown the incomplete North Wall as a wooden Palisade with earth ramparts. I have also shown the quarry water cistern in centre of the main hill as being covered although this is conjecture on my part.
I wasn't going to attempt Deganwy Castle because so little remains until I stumbled across the 'CastleWales' Historical contributor 'John Northall' who's essay gave enough detail for me work with.
Very little remains of the castle today, apart from a few wall sections, scattered masonry and visible wall and ditch lines. It is thought that Edward i may have used the stone for the construction of Conwy Castle.
Produced with Blender, Sketchup, Unity5 and Photoshop.

Cheers Henry. No time machine, but I did find some detailed info and a couple of layout sketches by Historian John Northall. A couple of Site visits later and I was confident enough to begin the model.

Interesting to see the castle still had some wooden walls. They seemed to be compensated by a ditch and the elevation.

Documents show that the Norman Robert of Rhuddlan built a castle here in 1080, but nothing remains of it. It was later regained by the Welsh, and in 1191 Giraldus Cambrensis described it in the Itinerarium Cambriae as a "noble structure." However, it was soon to be destroyed as part of a scorched earth policy in the face of threats from King John. When Llywelyn ap Iorwerth regained the castle in 1213 he rebuilt it in good style. Only a little of this castle survives today. In 1228 it is recorded that he imprisoned one of his sons here. After Llywelyn's death in 1240 his sons were not strong enough to resist the English advance and demolished the castle in anticipation of its loss. When the English arrived in 1245 they were forced to shiver in tents, so effective had been the Welsh destruction.
@DextraVisual
@DextraVisual 7 лет назад
I would like to know what the Welsh Structure looked like in the time of Llywelyn ap Iorwerth. The stone castle built for Henry III was destroyed again in 1263 by Llywelyn ap Gruffudd.

Brilliant work! Out of interest, would the mountain sides in the background have been that bare at the time? (i know your focus was obviously on the castle so this is in no way a criticism). I remember reading in a biography of Edward I that there was a large wolf population at the time of the invasion. It also mentioned that they were in constant guerilla warfare due to Welsh resistance hiding in what would've been dense forest at the time. There was even a recreation of where they had cut back large areas of forest in order to March troops safely into Gwynedd. The 1000m peaks on the French side of the Pyrenees are how I imagine medieval Snowdonia; blanket disiduous forest up to about 800m with clearances in places for grazing livestock. Although i do know that the hills above Penmaenmawr were cleared for settlement as early as the Bronze age. *I've since found a contemporary (ish!) evidence cited in Linnard (1979 pg. 103) which states '... All of the wholle countrey then was but a forrest, rough and spacious as it is still... but then wast of inhabitants, and all over growen with woods, for Owen Glyndwrs warres beginninge in Anno 1400...' (Sir John Wynne of Gwydyr, cited in Linnard, 1979 pg. 103) ' The History of Forestry and Forests in Wales' (Linnard, 1979) provides a great deal of evidence for how wild the landscape would've been back then. It has lots of first hand evidence of dense forest throughout much of Wales from the Bronze age to the late Middle Ages. It also mentions dense forest in the area at the exact time of Edward's campaign (i can provide direct excerpts as soon as I'm on my laptop).
@DextraVisual

Thanks Daniel. Yes, I think there would have been extensive woodland across the surrounding hills, and more farmed and worked land than is suggested in the model. The idea of a medieval forest is different to what we think of today. I believe open heath with scattered trees would still be considered forest land back then. The lower flanks of the Pyrenees is a good illustrative reference. I am able to add vast woodland and foliage detail to scenes these days but the PC I owned at the time of this rendering would have melted. :)

That was wicked of you! If I understand correctly, this is the realtime render in unity? It is too resource intensive or pull my old MacBook 2011 with discrete graphics card? To create transitions from the cameras?
@DextraVisual
@DextraVisual 7 лет назад
Yes realtime render in Unity. I capture scenes with uRecord which is a frame by frame capture script, so frps is not an issue. On a 2011 macbook you should be fine for scene creation and camera transitions. Maybe a bit laggy as a first person player though.

Nice, my friend Andy and I walked round there, lovely place with great views, will link him this vid. He used to imagine what the place looked like and now he will have visual estimation. Is it correct that much of the stones were carted off to aid in the construction of Conwy castle?
@DextraVisual
@DextraVisual 4 года назад
Thanks Ponen. I heard that the stone was used to assist with the construction of Conwy. Makes sense, I guess. A few thousand tons of cut and faced stone would be too good to leave.
