Test scene using drone footage to create photogrammetry mesh for the terrain. I have also merged some of the drone shots to create a before and after effect of the Castle. Huge thank you to Roughcuts for providing the footage.

I've only just discovered your reconstructions and cannot get enough of them although surely your reconstruction of the interiors is at a little speculative but very good all the same. One of the things I've learned is that many castles are clearly the work of local Lords and do not follow the principle Interlocking defence like Edward I castles in North Wales. We know those are the work of the single master builder and even the ones he was not involved with incorporate his ideas.

Nice work, but are you sure there really was a gate straight to the fortification with the D-shaped tower? In Bohemia, we have many castles (a bit similar to the Welsh ones) from the 13th century and if they are large enough to have a lower court, then it is the place where the first gate of the castle was. And only from the lower court, could you proceed to the residential tower/fortified palace part.
@DextraVisual
@DextraVisual Год назад
Yes, the lower court was added later. Ewloe is a strategic puzzle for military historians. It is overlooked by high ground on one side and has multiple gates as you have noticed. It is supposed by some that it was a kind of guerrilla fort right against the English border and never intended to be held against any kind of heavy siege.

How do you know about the roofs of the towers
@DextraVisual
@DextraVisual 3 года назад
Hello there. The keep at Ewloe was a typical Welsh D-tower so the roof shape known from other castle examples. At 1:37 you can make out the pitch of the roof in the stone work. For the materials there is some debate. Possibly lead sheeting, fired clay tile or stone/wood shingle. I have shown shingle as this castle was apparently not expensively dressed or occupied for very long.

Cheers Takeda. You are right, clear ground was usually observed around castles but probably not in this case. Ewloe was probably not viable as a defensive stronghold as it's curtain is immediately overlooked by higher ground to the north so there is some conjecture to it's actual function. It was described at the time in the Chester Plea Rolls as a small keep in dense woodland. A guerrilla base at the Welsh/English border or a hunting lodge for the Welsh Princes have both been posed as possibilities.

Ewloe Castle position in a hollow with higher adjacent ground doesn’t make sense as projectiles such as catapult can rain down on it.

@@DextraVisual than you for your prompt reply! I tried a google search (from the USA) and was met with terrible results. It's stone, not Motte/Bailey, no apparent village or town wall, small, and probably late... in GB? This is a weird place that I'd like to learn more about!
@DextraVisual
@DextraVisual 2 года назад
@@tananam9782 Hi TananaM. The castle is 13th century. It was built on the troubled border between England and Wales and it is doubtful that it was ever intended to withhold any kind of prolonged siege. (overlooked by higher ground). It appears to be a well made skirmish tower built initially as a finger to the English and perhaps a hunting lodge for the Welsh Princes of the period. There are hundreds of small castles and Pele towers in Britain like this.
@tananam9782
@tananam9782 2 года назад
@@DextraVisual Wasn't there a legal requirement that one must have had the "License to Crenelate"? That is, it doesn't matter how rich you are, you can't build a castle, or make your manor into a castle, unless the King says you can. This was special in England, and helped the King maintain control over the Barons. These little fortifications obviously do exist, and so my understanding of medieval British real property law is must be incomplete. By a long way. What's interesting to me is how small, advanced in architecture, and late, this structure is. How there seems to be no supporting village, how it's not on an especially advantageous spot of topography. It's just so much... "why?" It doesn't make a lot of sense, and I suppose that's what's piqued my interest.
