@anthonyburke3000
@anthonyburke3000 5 лет назад
To both you Shan Hussain and Neil Degrasse, I guess it was okay for Capernicus and Galileo to accept that the earth was the center of the Universe. Maybe scientists should always question science, especially when the majority of scientists decide to close their minds on what's "generally accepted" by the scientific community. Remember when Pluto was still a planet? It took one man, against the 99%, to declassify Pluto as a planet! It's also interesting how we're supposed to believe "climate change" because the majority of scientists say so, but on the other hand we're supposed to believe a handful of "doctors" who claim that the flu shot causes autism. Now parents aren't getting their kids vaccinated and old diseases like Polio and Typhoid are coming back into the mass population. Thanks science!

A number of people are saying Neil would make a great president. Usually I'm opposed to chants of celebrities for political office because popularity does not equal credentials. Non-thinkers tend to vote based on ridiculous, superficial reasons. But I might make an exception for Neil because politics is _starving_ for a scientific perspective -- whereby decisions are made based on evidence and reason, not just gut feeling, wishful thinking, mysticism, selfish gain, or cherished idealogies. Whether he'd have the tolerance for all the pressures is another question, and he'd face a battle with those who think you have to believe in some _supernatural power_ to be a good person! But he'd certainly inject some refreshing rationality into *a field rife with lawyers and business people.* He'd get my vote over any president I've seen in my 60 trips around the sun.

Back in the late 60s when I was in college studying geography, climate/weather, geology, etc. a physics professor used the example of taking all the reels of film of all the Hollywood movies. Take all those reels of film and string them out in a line. Next hook those pieces of film together end to end. The length of a human lifetime is one frame of film in that long line. I've never forgotten that lecture to this day. As humans we have little or no concept of geologic time. It is for this same reason that people don't have any concept of evolution. The time scale just doesn't register except in the minds of scientists who can see and understand the evidence and the objective facts. It's no wonder young earth creationists cannot grasp the concept as it relates to a book written in a mostly illiterate Iron Age Era. Too these folks the idea is just too vast. The problem with the scale of time is what causes people to believe climate change is not real because they don't see the scale. In the new COSMOS series Dr. Tyson speaks about periods of extinction that happened over millions of years. If we blow off climate change there will eventually come a time when people say, "Oh snap!" The atmosphere will warm, oceans will rise and most of the species on earth will go extinct including humankind. Perhaps evolution over many millions of years will evolve new species who are a bit more intelligent and less self-destructive than we humans. Who knows? Earth will evolve and remain earth. We in our ignorance won't be around to see it. Climate change is fake? I think I'd be a bit more concerned about that conclusion.
@grahamnumber7123
@grahamnumber7123 4 года назад
TrikesterHal You are right about extinction events and these can be seen in the records. What's also noticeable is a continual downward trend of CO2. Humans are merely putting back something that's at geological record low levels that was once there already. While pollution is bad and there are negative effects the pros and cons must be looked at instead of the idea of anti human behaviour. Denying developing countries cheap abundant energy by virtue signalling westerners based on a consensus that doesn't actually exist except in a buddy buddy community of agreeing or being fired. Science welcomes criticism to get better. The MSM are pushing this narrative but behind the scenes the political establishment are polarising Americans in unfair ways for both sides. Decisions that affect humanity need to consider the + and - points otherwise THEN we fail. Net warming is +0.8C or something crazy if looking at >70failed projections. CO2 follows warming as seen here: www.researchgate.net/profile/J-E_Solheim/publication/257343053_The_phase_relation_between_atmospheric_carbon_dioxide_and_global_temperature/links/56e4581508ae68afa1106148/The-phase-relation-between-atmospheric-carbon-dioxide-and-global-temperature.pdf It frustrates me and others how the media and even NASA use Ice core data for a CO2 proxy even though is monotonic and barely fluctuates. The reasons for this are known. Sites like carbon brief and sceptical science are one and the same side of a coin. Research clearly shows their bias and adding one data set here from another there to paint a picture they want to is far from scientific. They then make predictions with models that are so ridiculous it beggars belief. They also make false claims about past CO2 levels never being over 280 PPM. Steinthorsdottir, M., Wohlfarth, B., Kylander, M. E., Blaauw, M., & Reimer, P. J. (2013). Stomatal proxy record of CO 2 concentrations from the last termination suggests an important role for CO 2 at climate change transitions. Quaternary science reviews, 68, 43-58. Fig 8 clearly shows how ice core has a rather sleepy 20PPM vs plant data 250 variation. Kouwenberg, L. L. R. (2004). Application of conifer needles in the reconstruction of Holocene CO2 levels. Another with pine needles. There was no driving of temperature then or now. These cycles are not on the IPCC AR5 report: Herrera, V. V., Mendoza, B., & Herrera, G. V. (2015). Reconstruction and prediction of the total solar irradiance: A wider dataset from 100 to present on TSI my Watts per M2. The fact that Tyson is propped up to comment on everything "science" is evidence that people in general are completely ignorant of how diverse science is. Tyson is an astrophysicist. Well here we are in 2022, 14 years after that date and it has yet to happen. Undaunted, DeGrasse Tyson makes more apocalyptic predictions. When I build my house, I call an engineer. When I send my kids to school I expect them to be taught by a teacher. When I need a weather forecast I listen to a meteorologist. So tell me again: Why do I need to listen to a climatologist when I want to know something about the climate?
@user-mg4zu7bs6i
@user-mg4zu7bs6i 5 лет назад
You should make sure there are no gaping holes in your logic before you go rhetorical. (1) Your engineers have probably successfully built houses, and so you can trust that your house will stand up. (2) (Hopefully) your teachers have successfully taught students before, as shown in their improved test scores, knowledge, etc. (3) Your weather forecaster has correctly predicted the weather before, so he/she is credible. I would not trust any of these people if they could not produce results. So when it comes to climate (and other things)... these people have done *experiments*, but have not proven their results through practice (since it is impossible - they are predicting decades and centuries in the future). I'm not saying that what they are saying is true or false - what I am saying is that anyone who is CERTAIN that disaster is coming (or that climate is change is certainly false) from climate change is totally wrong. You can never be certain about what will happen decades into the future. If you tell me that these guys claim to predict with 99.99% certainty (or whatever) that the annual average temperature of the world will increase by x degrees C in year 21xx, I will tell you that's BS.
@user-mg4zu7bs6i
@user-mg4zu7bs6i 5 лет назад
In addition, it's very likely that technology in the future will be more than adequate to help humans adapt to climate change.
@guyfawkes8873
@guyfawkes8873 5 лет назад
Your point is itself incredibly flawed: I listen to a professional not because I am certain that he can produce the correct result. I listen to him because I am sure he can produce a BETTER result than myself. The same logic applies here. I know NOTHING about climate science compared to a climatologist, so why would I not be willing to listen to him? Maybe he is wrong, but I have absolutely no grounds to judge that on, and all of his colleagues agree with him. If every climatologist in the world agrees that climate change exists (and trust me at least 99.99% of them do, because the greenhouse effect is a proven scientific principle), then I would be a fool not to listen to them "because noone can predict the future". no, noone can. And that's not the point. The point is that their scenario of the future is rather more likely than anything I could think up. So maybe I should listen.
@user-mg4zu7bs6i
@user-mg4zu7bs6i 5 лет назад
Not sure that you'd hire someone who can build a "better" house than you can. Would you live in that? How about a "better airplane" than yourself? Would you ride in that? HELL no. You would have to see results. Construction workers stress test their constructions many times. You realize that *trillions* of dollars are involved in this industry? It would be one thing to just say "I believe it, yeah". Do you understand that there are carbon taxes, carbon tracking, and revolutionary change of the job market? It's not a matter of "yeah, I believe 'em". We are all *listening to him*. That's kind of why we are here. I'm not against renewable energy, conservative measures, but I am against carbon taxes (would greatly hurt working class), the insane bureaucracy, that would result from going full-on into this.
@guyfawkes8873

Actually they really don't. Did you know that it's almost impossible to calculate whether an Aeroplane WILL fly? They simply do the best they can and then send a test pilot off to see if it works. Most of the time it does. I'm from the arctic. If I wanted my house built I'd try to find someone who has a track record of finding ways to avoid permafrost degradation underneath the house. Does that mean my house will never see permafrost damages? No. Does that disqualify him from building the foundations to my house? No, because he will do a better job at it than I myself would. Not a perfect one, just a better one. The same applies to aeroplanes, trains, ships. We have them made by those who are better at making them than ourselves. This doesn't mean they don't fail at times. We use them anyway. So my point stands: Why do we not listen to those who know better than ourselves on the topic of climatology, when we do it in every other field were we have a need of expertise.
