Dehydrating Canned and Frozen Green Beans | I will Never Dehydrate One of These Again!

This was my first time dehydrating canned and frozen green beans, and I was surprised by the results. I dehydrated 4 12-oz packages of Great Value frozen green beans, and 1 16-oz can of canned green beans. I wanted to try both to test out which one I like best. I was kind of hoping that the frozen green beans would work best, because freezing results in less nutritional loss than canning food. Pretty early on I could see whether the frozen green beans or the canned green beans would do best. The real test came when it was time to rehydrate the green beans. I'll let you watch the video to find out which type of green beans I will never dehydrate again, even if people gave me a whole bunch of the green beans for free. This was my first real dehydrating fail. :)

love love dehydrating frozen veggies when I see them on sale. Easiest ever eh? already blanched.. toss on and go. Your going to love dehydrated green beans. and they rehydrate wonderfully. never did canned beans for dehydrating ..either garden grown or on sale frozen. Try placing a wee mason jar over the circle hole in center.. keeps foods from falling down when filling trays, and fits the hole perfectly. jelly jar's perfect.loved loved my nesco's when i had them.. only thing i do not like? that grouping of dehydration time for fruit and veggies. veg should be 125 and fruit 135..in order to maintain full nutrition possible. Nesco has so many ppl using 135 for veg because of that grouping. fresh and blanched? are mint..frozen also good.. glad i've never used canned lol.. great experiment. enjoyed my visit.

Thanks for the tips as always! I sometimes even dehydrate at lower temps to preserve as much nutrition as possible. I think that I'll switch to 125 as my default, as I've been doing that quite a bit lately without it hugely impacting drying time. I do have a Corsori that will be arriving soon and it will be interesting to see how that works compared to the Nesco. Maybe one of these days I'll get the big Cabela like you have. I just don't know where I'd put it!

The frozen ones look really good. That would be a great snack. Thank you for sharing
@StockingMyPantry
@StockingMyPantry 3 года назад
Thanks for visiting! I think they would make a good snack if you spritzed them with cooking spray and sprinkled with salt before dehydrating. But then you couldn't keep them long term, due to the oil. But I definitely like that snack idea!

Wow, this is great information. I'll definitely be dehydrating frozen instead of canned. I just bought a dehydrator and a case each of canned green beans and canned peas. I was looking for a video about this very information. I'm glad I found your video before I opened all those cans! So, the cans will go on the shelf, and I'm going back to the store to buy frozen beans and peas. Tysm!!❤

Stacking 4 Retirement - I'm so glad you found this helpful! Canned green beans are a great thing to keep on the shelf. I actually really enjoy them. I hope you really enjoy your new dehydrator. I love using mine! I love your channel name. I'm heading into retirement myself, which is part of my motivation for stocking up on things. :)

I have never tried green beens dehydrated, love that your doing 2 different ways! Good morning review. Frozen and fresh seem best good share Becca. I have had the fresh a few times from a friend and they are great!

I still want to try fresh, because fresh is almost always best. Plus the least amount of nutrient loss since you don't lose many nutrients with dehydrating, but do with freezing and even more so canning. Do you do any dehydrating?

@@MontysnMotion fruit is good! So tasty. It's a good replacement for candy. I'm doing more and more, since my food storage space is limited and I can fit a lot of dehydrated food into a small space.

Good experiment anyhow either fresh or frozen with anything If its in a can eat it from a can no need too dehydrate I use a oven it works well takes 12 hrs tho its time consuming day and night will buy some frozen beans yours came out good , thankyou learning from others efforts.
@StockingMyPantry
@StockingMyPantry 8 месяцев назад
Thanks for your comments. I appreciate it! If you have a chance to pick up a dehydrator, I think it's worth it, so you don't have to tie up your oven so long. It does take a long time, even with a dehydrator. Maybe even longer, since you can set a low temperature - possibly lower than your oven will go. Speaking of that, you don't need a fancy dehydrator, but if you decide to buy one, be sure to get one where you can change the temperature. There are some cheaper ones that don't have that option, and they run at about 160 degrees. That's great for jerky, but not so great for other things like fruit and vegetables.

I appreciate the input. I would think the canned green beans are so processed that dehydrating them over processed them. But I am no expert.
@StockingMyPantry
@StockingMyPantry 3 года назад
You're welcome. I'm guessing you are right. At any rate, the multiple processes do take most of the nutrients out, so it's probably better not to do too much of that anyway. :)

I'll definitely dehydrate some frozen green beans now! Thanks for doing a comparison between frozen and canned! Really good info. Just had a televisit with Dr. And both my husband and I were told to step away from the carbs! So I'm going back to low carb and I'll be eating lots of green beans....this pandemic really messed up our exercise schedule and diet.
@StockingMyPantry
@StockingMyPantry 3 года назад
@@jerikay I think the pandemic messed a lot of us up. At first, out of boredom, I was baking like crazy. I gained quite a bit of weight that I still need to take off. That is one nice thing about the canning and dehydrating. Make your own convenience food that is healthy so when you don't feel like cooking, you have something easy to make that is actually good for you!

@@StockingMyPantry I’m just getting into dehydrating & am anxious to try but I like the looks of the frozen ones much better than the canned ones. They looked so much better when compared. I will watch more of your videos to learn more. Thank you.
@StockingMyPantry
@StockingMyPantry 2 года назад
@@wifigrannyl.1354 I agree that the frozen is much better than the canned. I think the canned will do in a pinch - e.g. if you're desperate to preserve it and want to have it just in case you really need it. But they're not very appetizing. Thanks in advance for watching more of my videos! If you have questions along the way, feel free to ask and I'll do my best to help you out.

I will try to dehydrate a can of green beans for dog treats. I have some no salt added greenbeans. He thinks that dried greenbeans are a great treat. I will only use them as a dog treat at my house. I am not allowed to eat green beans, and my husband is anti vegetables. So when I had some canned green beans given to us, I figured that is for the dog. Although I am going to need the space soon. They might make good dog treats.

Canned versus frozen is a no brainer .. The canned are overcooked and soft to begin with
