Hi Del, as mentioned before, it helps a lot to fill the tube with sand. You can even calculate the area which you have to heat up with ((2*pi*r)*1,33)/2 (for 180°). Cheers!

There’s always a proper tool or way to do things. I love that you improvise a solution and get it done. My Dad taught me to make work arounds like that when I was a boy. Made me smile watching this video. Thank you!

Mate, I actually laughed out loud when you showed that bit of stainless pipe and said you were going to heat it up and bend it! But as usual your extreme patience has won again and what a result on that loop. Very well done! Can’t wait to see the rest of the fabrication take place on the build.

Just what the original cafe racer boys would have done in the 60s - no fancy pipe benders - just basic tools - and a whole bunch of hard work and creativity - fantastic job Del - looking forward to the next episode with eager anticipation - thank you!

I've been watching your videos since the beginning of the street fighter project, and every time you do something new , lor need to learn a new skill, your greatest asset of patience and perseverance is what gets you through it where so many others would have either given up or taken a short cut that ended badly. You are a pleasure to watch , can't wait to see how this all goes.

If you want to bend the pipe without kinking it. Pack the tube with sand. When you bend it with heat it will not flatten.

@blacksmithsligo
@blacksmithsligo 2 года назад
When you allow steel to cool in the air it is called normalising. It will soften the steel slightly but not by much. To anneal it you need to let it cool down much slower than by air cooling. What we use in the blacksmith trade is vermiculite. Put a layer down on the bench or floor, heat the steel up, place it on the vermiculite, then cover with another layer. Then leave to cool to room temp. The good thing about vermiculite is that when you are done you just sweep it up back into the bag ready for next time.

Great work! Here's and idea I have seen somewhere on the internet: weld one end shut, pour sand in the pipe, weld the other end and and it should really help with preventing kinks and flattening of the pipe while bending, as it's really hard for the sand to compress inside. Anyway, great vid as always, thanks!
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 5 лет назад
Hi buddy, it's always made to look easy, that is in fact a very precise process, packing a tube with sand has to be the exact density of sand, it's critical in fact, pack it too hard and it'll fracture the pipe and burst it open, too little and it'll kink anyway, and not knowing the exact critical specifications, it's better to do it the simple way... also if you heat the sand a little too much, it melts in to a block so that's equally critical... just playing it safe mate!

Being an electrician I frequently bend pipe but I use the proper size bender. Now that being said even with a bender when making an offset or any second bend it's important not to "Dog leg" your second or in your case the parallel opposing bend which is hard enough with a bender, let alone using a wrench and vise. You're a Mad Genius and that poop grin you made when you first mocked it up was priceless, had to be a great feeling. I think the biggest attribute of your channel isn't just top workmanship and creativity but you inspire many with very little to work with. Again, I think Busa's are gross but this will be the nuttiest, fastest desired cafe racer out there when you're done, I can't bloody wait!

Now this is great . Old school ,it worked . It was fun and no suzuks were harmed in the process (the only one who lost an eye was the tank graphic )..lost an " I " ok that's enough of that ! Btw I have a pipe bender with Mandrills and spring inserts and all that cobblers but it still stretches the tube on the bends and isn't half as much fun as what you just did . And I still go wibbly when you play one of my songs "Thank you !" Ok , you and Penny take care I have another million hours of sanding to do on a bass (and a cock up to sort out!) But hey that's why we keep the dust and wood glue 👍🏻👍🏻peas and loaf 👍🏻☮❤
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 5 лет назад
Hey brother Springy, you're dead right, pipe benders, however good they are, will still distort the tube, so it's just a trade off and I'll get there once I can afford one, this was just a ghetto fix for now and will do the rest of the tail frame in the same way... gotta bigger plan on the horizon, so the funds are a bit tied up for now!... it's an honour to play the song again, just letting you know we still care brother! Did you consider making a former from wood i.e. a scaffolding plank or what sparks knew as a bending block which was a plank with a hole cut in it then profiled off? this would have eliminated the dents, and the heat would only cause a bit of smoke.

nice work but preserve those sanding disks.. use the grinding disk to get it close, then finish with the sanding disk, unless you have a unlimited source haha. great job!

I'm only taking off welding flash and rough edges, the whole lot was sanded flat with that one disc and it's still good to use for practically the rest of the job, they are so robust you wouldn't believe it, plus they come in boxes of 25, so the last time I bought some was over a year ago!

Also youth you could use a welding blanket and always have a fire extinguisher near to hand.
