We used to make our own silencer boxes for my dad's pickup. But we used old fire extinguishers for the outer pay and welded them shut. lasted much longer, and there was grocery money left after the job. Great video!

I have to give you a big thank you. I pulled out my baffles from drag pipes. I wrapped them with the same insulation you used, it made a nice difference. Not so shard and hard hitting. Thank you.

Too right! Ive always used loft insulation on all my bikes. 2 and 4 stroke. Theres always enough surplice around the edges to pack an exhaust! My current stock is the old insulated jacket from our old hot water tank. Wrapped in protective plastic and cut into thin sheets. Perfect!

Thanks a million! I've been watching your tutorials ever since I bought my first Triumph several years ago. Always great presentation and tips. I just bought another T100 and it has the aforementioned (and now discontinued) D&D exhaust. Like you said, they sound great, but they are irritating my neighbors a bit. Exact same echoing sound as your first example. I look forward to doing this modification this weekend.

I found 25' roll 0f 3"x 1/2" fiberglass mat pipe insulation at a home improvement store. one roll was more than enough to y easily, double wrap, two baffles. I secured the loose end with masking tape so it will release and allow loft after run in. Thanks for suggesting building insulation ; my out of pocket was 5USD

I was going to get rid of all the hair this week, clearly i'll just pop round for a trim! Seriously, I had no idea you could use loft insulation! I've plans to put an open pipe on the Enfield, with an airbox mod and rejet (once I've finished running her in. Hitchcocks sell a separate baffle for just a few quid, and it's nice to know I could put to good use the mountain of spare insulation in the loft if I need to tighten the sound up a bit. English pipe with Gold Star silencer, here I come (unless I go for the megaphone!) A welcome return of the 'how to' episodes of late. Hope you've both been having some good two wheel therapy too! Hey dude. I used to work on a boat building yard. We used to fibreglass hulls of 50 to 60 ft yachts, then fair it down with sandpaper on giant sanding cauls. It was a miserable job to do in summer, in full mask, goggles and a boiler suit. One thing I learnt from the daily splinters and at one point a lung infection, dispite the mask, and that was that you would never get me anywhere near glass fibres in any form without gloves and a respirator with brand new cartriges. I hope you wearnt too itchy after filming this video, five years ago!

Hi Del. I bought V&H short shots for my Shadow at xmas, even with the quiet baffles they were still too loud for me, gave me a headache most rides, plus the timing was all wrong, I removed the baffles and re wadded (a word? lol) them, re packed them, took 2 hrs to get the baffles out, bloody things. I still weren't happy, so read up on back pressure, I home made some copper inserts made from flattening some 15mm copper pipe and shaping them into a spring so they wouldn't rattle inside the pipe then I pushed them up into the baffle and secured with a screw on the inside of the pipe so the screw would not show, this gave just the right amount of back pressure to reduce the noise to a more pleasant sound for the rider, but also gave more low end torque and reduce the backfire too. I learned that straight through drag pipes are good for drag racing as they gave the best top end, but for simple everyday riding this can just be a pain and give most riders a headache, I still love the sound of the pipes on my bike since the home made baffle inserts and a lot of people have said that it sounds much better, a more lower sounding rubble rather than I barking sound, this is before I've explained what I've done to improve it. I know too much back pressure is bad for the engine, but it seems to be spot on at the moment so I'm very happy with it. Enjoyed ya video, thanks guys. Paul.
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 10 лет назад
Well done Paul, i love the sound of that mod to bung up the pipes a bit, you're right, you can have too hollow and empty a sound, and a little baffling can make a huge improvement. Thanks for sharing that buddy, ride safe and enjoy your bike.. Del.

Years ago, I "fabricated" a fiberglass packed baffle tube to stick on the tail end of the expansion chamber on my brother's 2 stroke motocross bike. The thing was too crazy loud for riding around in our neighborhood. I'm sure the engine wasn't very happy with the added back pressure, but it ran ok, and was WAY quieter ... for about 5 minutes. That's how long it took for the whole thing to shoot off into the woods somewhere. Good times!

Hey Del. Just a quick question about soldering. After watching your vid using solder as a filler, I thought I might try it to fill pitted fork stanchions. I use super glue to fill and fine grade wet n dry to sand at the mo but it needs re-doing every few months (its only a 15 minute job). Do you reckon solder would bond well? Otherwise I'm thinking epoxy or some such. Your thoughts would be much appreciated.
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 10 лет назад
Well if you're bodging the pitted spots every few months, then i guess it cant hurt to try, i have no idea if it will stay put...have a go and let us know.... but long term, why not get them rechromed..?
@neanderthalgene1099
@neanderthalgene1099 10 лет назад
Moonfleet41 Unfortunately the budget doesn't allow for re-chroming for a while yet. Spent a small fortune on this old bike so far this year and unfortunately the missus is putting her foot down and wants a holiday and some new soft furnishings! I'll try the solder but above the point the fork seal travels to test, and do the rest if it bonds well. Let you know if it works out. Thanks as always for your reply mate.

@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 10 лет назад
Hi mate....there is currently NO legal Db limit for road bikes, they rely on the enforcement of "not for road use" stamps etc and 'tollerate' louder cans as long as they are not ridiculous....most race tracks have a Db limit for track days, it varies around 103 and a perceived pitch..(screaming two strokes need to be much lower)... but for the road, we have got away with that legislation so far..!

Nice one. Quick question: does the packing deteriorate over time, over useage or a combination of both. I've got a race can (sounds luuurverly with the V-4), it only did a couple thou on the bike every summer but it's probably about 8yrs old now. Time for a re-pack?
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 10 лет назад
Yes indeed, quite correct my friend, they do deteriorate over time and use, the tiny fibers of wool break up and disintegrate as time passes and they get louder and louder... the problem it that its so slow and progressive that you wont notice it getting louder...however, ill bet that if you take the baffle out, after 8 years, you have hardly any wadding left, plus it will also be very gummed up with soot and condenstation that it wont be very absorbent now and it needs to be t absorb sound..But once you repack it, you'll notice a marked difference right away... hope that helps.. Del.

Hi Del and all! Thank you Del for such a channel; learned a lot because of you ! I have some questions: Nightster 1200 , 2007. Slip ons Screamin Eagle. Took them out; almost no more insulation. My baffle has a strange inlet in it that deviates the gases in between the OD baffle and ID of the chomed pipe. Not modified. The baffle is drilled with almost 3/8 inch holes. Not many though. Nothing compare to a lot i saw on your channel or others. A drawing would be easier... Anyway; I wrapped everything with alumina blanket + fiber glass (like yours). No more backfired sound, and all that bad noise, but still super loud. Can you tell me something about that deviation ? I clogged it with the insulation: starting to think was stupid. Should i drill more holes or by another set of baffles ? Cheers mate.
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 7 лет назад
Just to be clear buddy... what are you exactly trying to achieve here?.. more power?, more noise?, less noise?, maybe to pass some kind of smog test?... not sure what you are asking buddy... !
@ikust007
@ikust007 7 лет назад
Must admit, not really clear. Well : much less noise. The damn thing is loud like Hell. Power, i have plenty. Do not want to put back the stock exhaust. I have a Screamin Eagle breather and a remap... Not dyno ($$). Need to lower the dB. I am wondering if i should drill holes in the baffles so that the insulation traps more of the sound. Also, my question was also theoretical; what is the purpose of that deviation done in the baffles? Generally, the baffles are just plain tubes drilled. Have you ever seen that kind of baffle? Did i made a mistake by putting insulation everywhere (and at the same time, covering that deviation)? tx for all

Hi Del, another great video. Thank you. How far you have come in these few years 🤣. I am about to buy a 2001 Triumph Speed Triple...but, please don't spit your cornflakes out, it's too loud! So I was going to look at adding/replacing the baffle and/or packing like this video. Do you know, does anything else need doing regards engine management if you do this? I heard someone mention 'ecu will need remapping' which sounds like I won't have the necessary hammer! I would value your opinion. I'm just a sedate commuter, not a wheelying nutter! Cheers!
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 5 лет назад
Hi Daniel, It's difficult to answer that mate as not sure what exhaust you have, does it currently run smooth and clean right through the rev range to the red line? If so, then you're good to go... you will have to find out if it was re-mapped to get where it is (previous owner), perhaps there's evidence in the history? If you wanna go back to a more standard factory sound, then the Triumph dealer can re-map it back to factory for you... and if there's no evidence in your history, they can tell you what map is currently installed, so it looks like a trip to the dealer at the very least... but they don't charge much and they'll do it properly for you!

@@Moonfleet41 thanks Del, but I'm confused. I collect the bike tomorrow so will check the history for any evidence. But I guess you are saying that, whatever I do - new exhaust, repack...I need a visit to the dealer to check or remap...?
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 5 лет назад
@@danielb1563 No, im just saying to check what you have in the bike right now.. if it has an open loud exhaust then it would most likely have been remapped for that in order to get the best from it.. if it has an open race can on it, and runs smoothly right round the clock.. then it should do the same with the pipe repacked.. just ride it once you have repacked it and see if it pulls and rides smooth with no flat spots... and if you find any flat spots or it coughs at certain revs, then it could be worth a look at remapping it..!

@@Moonfleet41 thanks Del. I got the bike this week, and actually spent an hour or so at Hughenden M40 Triumph yesterday and they really explained, as you have about it too... I may refit an original exhaust - at least for a bit. They said it'll likely run rich, if I do. Which is better than running lean...but see how it goes. Thanks, I am loving the triple!!

Hi del great video .. I've started using TEC 2x2 clubman exhaust on my Bonnie in place of TOR exhausts. But it sounds timid with the baffles and very loud n tinny without the baffles. How do I adjust the baffles for a more rich bassy beat just like that with the TOR exhausts. Do I shorten the baffles or cut open up the end . Need your expert advice on this . Thanks and regards.

Hi Kumara. I am friends with George Milburn, the Owner of TEC Bike Parts, and i was involved way back when he first designed the TEC exhausts, the baffles he designed we're meant to be really quiet just like the factory pipes if you wanted that, but you could cut them down to tune the sound as you wanted... so if it is the kind that are 'capped off' at the end, with a few holes round the tube.. then you could first cut just the cap itself off leaving the tube long, but open all the way through.. and see how you like that.... if you want more volume and a deeper sound, then you can cut the tube down in short increments until its right for your taste... Hope that helps you my friend, good luck with it.. Del.

Its fibreglass loft insulation, it covers the floor of the loft / attic in buildings.

How can I make my 2016 dyna low rider stock exhaust louder without damaging the performance of the bike?
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 4 года назад
Just put Short Shot slip ons in place of the mufflers, retaining the stock header pipes will be nice and loud, with no other mods needed, but if you do add a fueling device and open filter, you'll gain lots more power and the bike will run cooler.
@vinniez2188

You will also need to modify the fuel tune if you do all that.
