Rush Racing Pipe Baffle Re-Pack | Is it quieter?

I wanted to see if I could repack the baffles on my Rush Racing exhaust pipes to quiet them down. I bought some Moose Racing muffler packing and a roll of fiberglass exhaust insulating tape to see if I could come up with my own packing set up. Check out this video of what I did and if it worked.

Lots of people might not understand why you’d want quieter mufflers but if you’d had that ringing in your ears from days of riding you’d know exactly why. Great topic Chris, I think I’ll do something similar for a certain multi-day ride next August. The ear that got hurt - was it the same side your pipes are on?
@OpenRoader
@OpenRoader 5 лет назад
Actually, the ear that got hurt is my left, that's the side my ol' deaf guitarist stood on with a full Marshall Stack for 18 years. I never really had an issue with it until I rode to Sicily. 7.5 hours each way and when I got home, my ear was more than ringing, it was hissing. Hasn't been the same since. There is no way I could even ride with these pipes without ear protection now. 30 years of loud music and then loud pipes didn't mix well for me. Thanks for watching

I always wanted loud pipes on all my bikes. Just bought a rebel 450. Got a extra set of headpipes and bought cocktail shaker mufflers for them. It’s so loud. I live in a older neighborhood and I don’t want to be that guy anymore lol. I definitely need to find something to quiet them down. Either that or put the stock mufflers back on

I wonder if the super tight packing of the original baffles prevented them from dampening a lot of the noise.
@x_mau9355
@x_mau9355 9 месяцев назад
No that should not happen if or because the material is soft and absorbs the sound waves.

To make them quieter turn the baffles round , the open ends of the slits should be facing the engine and not the way you have them fitted

Sounds great! My Scout is still in waiting on the Indian stage 1 straights, and the sound I am hoping to get is what you have with your re-packed exhaust. Throatier than the stock exhaust but not ridiculously loud. Great job! Thanks for sharing.

It's really not bad. My only concern is that you reduced the diameter and you could have lost 3, 5, 8 HP power... You have to check if you notice any difference in the highest RPMs, when you want full power.

The "Quieter" baffles I got from Rush were the same, they even told me they were only a few dB's lower. Stay tuned for next weeks video when I do a full test ride and break down!
@x_mau9355
@x_mau9355 9 месяцев назад
Ok.. The theory is quite simple: if nothing breaks the sound waves the pipes are loud. If nothing dampens the sound waves the pipes are loud. So you need a "not full surface".. therefore the holes, which break the sound waves bouncing back and forth. And you need layers of soft material to absorb them. Fiberglass is heat resistant so it is used for that. Whatever can resist 200º-300ºC ca. is ok. In theory you can use cotton fabric or wool too, outside the fiberglass layers... If it doesn't burn it's ok. (therefore you can use masking tape outside. The temperature on the outer surface of the fiberglass is not that hot and even paper masking tape doesn't get burned). Some baffles have that further piece of metal straight through the diameter, it goes towards the engine (against flow) and its role is to break the sound waves at the beginning of the packed pipe. If you turn the baffle around and have it at the end of the pipes it doesn't work as it should... Pipes are therefore louder. Not all baffles have that, but you can create it, for example using twisted steel wire straight through the diameter of the baffle. Then it's important to have enough space (volume) to let the combustion gas go out: larger pipes (larger baffles) allow better combustion-gas outflow so you could gain some HP, but only up to a point. But larger pipes they are louder, of course because the sound waves bounce out with less resistance. Smaller pipes (thinner baffles) could reduce the outflow and you could lose power. But they are more silent, because the sound waves bounce more and get absorbed more. You have to pick the right balance. Of course the softer and thicker the absorption layer is the softer is the sound (because you cut the higher frequencies.. high frequency waves bounce more and get caught - absorbed - more on their way out). That's for the theory...
@x_mau9355
@x_mau9355 9 месяцев назад
Ideally you want - baffles slightly larger than the original baffles in diameter (10% to 20% ?) to gain some HP. - larger housing to wrap the baffle more if needed, in order to dampen more sound. - and maybe also slightly longer pipes to dampen (catch) even more sound on its way out.

The loudness is coming through the end of the muffler, not through the baffle. If you want quiet. You don't want to obstruct those holes. By packing tight, you're allowing more flow through, kinda like a straight pipes. My Rhinehearts DBX had no packing from manufacture and they are quiet. I even welded and pluged some holes to make it louder.

Very interesting and makes sense. I've since sold these pipes, but this is good information for anyone reading the comments, thanks
@jaybd9329
@jaybd9329 Год назад
Not sure this makes sense. The baffles/fiberglass absorb the sound that is going through the holes the baffle, which w/o the baffles, the sound would escape through the baffle and out the end of the pipe. Is my thinking flawed? Otherwise why would mfg’s use fiberglass at all?

Just bought a Road Glide with the 103, Rush ceramic coated headers and their "Big Louie" 4" slip-ons with 2.5" baffles. Loud as hell. A look down the baffle shows the packing was removed or has blown out. I use the same Moose Racing material you have on my built Guzzi LeMans and it does take the "bark" out of the note. I'm pulling the Rush baffles and repacking this week.
@OpenRoader
@OpenRoader Год назад
Awesome, I hope it improves the sound
@erwinroman4217
@erwinroman4217 Год назад
Well, didn't go as planned. The baffles would not pull out while on the bike, yes, the retaining screws were removed. I had to take the mufflers off and soak the edges of the baffles with Pblaster then drive them out from the front side with a wood dowel hitting against the floor. Just like using a fence post driver. When it was halfway out I saw that the packing was still in place. With the Rush ceramic header (no cat) and the Big Louie's 2.5" baffles, they're just LOUD. I did pull one baffle completely out and removed the old packing and found that the first 2/3rds was solid pipe wrapped to prevent heat from blueing the chrome. Only about 6" of the last third near the end was louvered for sound absorption. Pretty much a straight pipe with 6" long baffle. Now the struggle to get the baffle back in. I suspect that the outer shell or the baffle cups aren't completely round as it's a very tight fit and they get stuck. If I lean on the shell the baffle will go in further. Rush suggested I grind the cups down which is crazy. In the meantime I've put the stock mufflers back on and that really kills the performance. The Rush header and Big Louie combo gives great performance, just need really good earplugs.

Yet I can still hear my GPS directions through them with no problem. I also upgraded my helmet to a Schuberth C3. This helmet with designed purposely to knock down noise and it makes a big difference. Between the baffle repack, the ear plags and the Schuberth C3 helmet, it's made it possible to live with these pipes and I just love the sound. Hopefully this helps, thanks for watching

I was the same, I didn't understand what it meant. But the diameter of the center baffle tube is smaller.
