I have this very same PC for youtube and office purposes and some old games works amazing! I got from Ali express a total of 8gb ram ddr2 (800mhz) seems is max it handles, 256gb sata SSD drive and and old gt 1030 nvidia graphic card I had before updating my main pc one. also upgraded the CPU to a Core2Quad 9400. Pretty nice performance for such an old system wiht new ssd drives you can really improve old hardware!

For a dependable and budget friendly option, I would search out some Kingston 4 x 2GB DDR2 800MHz RAM. 4 2GB sticks. It is maxed out at 8GB. However, with an SSD installed, it will provide decent performance depending on what you plan to use it for.

This pc is also a Optiplex 760, bios: phoenix rom bios plus version 1.10 a15 but for some reason, it has windows 10 pro 32 bits (10.0, 19043). Do you think I can install the 64 bit version of windows 10 without any problems? Do you know why someone would have installed win 10 pro 32 bit instead of the 64 bit version?

I've been thinking about buying one of these for a steal, but I wanted to know if this machine is compatible with standard off-the-shelf ATX PSUs? I was thinking of buying a 400w SeaSonic 80+ Bronze, but I know that Dell has a history of using proprietary connections.
@HaisteComputerRepair
@HaisteComputerRepair 3 года назад
I would imagine that PSU would work as it has the same 24-pin and 4-pin connections to the motherboard as the stock PSU. I feel like this Seasonic 400W might be kind of an odd price match, though. As in, the PSU on Newegg.ca rounds up to $100 CAD. How much does does the 760 cost that you're looking at? Can you share what CPU, RAM, etc, is installed in it?
@deadaiir
@deadaiir 3 года назад
@@HaisteComputerRepair I only mentioned the SeaSonic because I saw it listed among some decent deals on 400-600w Bronze PSUs on Amazon and Best Buy here in the US. Anyway, the 760 I'm looking at is $37 USD shipped, equipped with a Core 2 Duo e7400, 2gb DDR2?, Dell 305w PSU, a dvd drive, and no HDD. It's a total fixer upper that I was planning on turning into a modest emulation machine with Batocera. You know, listing out all of it's shortcomings right now, this doesn't exactly sound like a good idea anymore.
@HaisteComputerRepair
@HaisteComputerRepair 3 года назад
@@deadaiir Honestly, for $37 and maybe another roughly $150 for upgrades, you might have an awesome emulation machine. Upgrades could be a 128GB SSD to boot Windows, one or two HDD's for storage, a graphics card, and even a CPU upgrade. Have you built many PC's before? It could be a fun project. If the PSU is 305W, you will probably be fine using that.

@@HaisteComputerRepair Can I rely on a 12 year old, no-name power supply?
@HaisteComputerRepair
@HaisteComputerRepair 3 года назад
@@deadaiir I would say probably, yes. Unless there is history of the PC having problems or getting blue screens. The power supply is meant to provide a low voltage current to your system board and everything attached to it. There are of course better newer ones, but if it's working for you then, perfect. That might be all you need. You could always try it out for a while and see what happens. Be sure to back up anything important. I am running a Power Supply on my work/editing build that I pulled from an old tower received from a customer. The build is essentially all spare parts aside from a system board/cpu combo I bought for it. I'm sure it's pretty old, but it works great.

That's a good question. I am not so sure it would work. I have tried installing a Core 2 Quad CPU in place of an E7400 Core 2 Duo and had no luck. @HaisteComputerRepair

The fan is running at full speed? Sound like you're beside an airplane? Or does it make a rattling noise, like it could be the bearings? I can't remember exactly, but look for a "thermal sensor" plug on your motherboard. Make sure that is plugged in correctly. In the past, this has worked for me. @@onekingyt1476 Ok. I took a look and it turns out there isn't a thermal sensor cable and plug to the board. Yeah, that's a tough one. I haven't been able to find specific fixes for fans acting like that. There's no control in the BIOS and software likely won't help. Try resetting the BIOS by following this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ILVKm5ANgJo.html That might help, but it also might not. You could purchase a 128GB Solid State Drive (or larger capacity depending on your budget), 8GB DDR2 RAM, and keep the Hard Drive as a storage drive. A win 10 key can be purchased from "wholesale" via sites like Gamers Outlet. It could be between $40-$80 CAD give or take, depending on what you want to install or what you can reuse. As for a graphics card, I installed a GT 210, which is not a great card and can be purchased for cheap. I would go for at least a GT 710 for some light performance or multiple monitor/HDMI support.

$52 total is pretty cheap I'd say. Are you getting anything with it? HDD, RAM, etc? I spent $40-50 CAD on the graphics card. I have ordered DDR2 RAM for close to $5/2GB stick. Refurbished SSD $27.57. Extra hard drives collected from clients or handed down to me for free. Total would be around $80-$90 CAD for upgrades. I also just have extra items around in my shop, so that's largely what went into this tower for this video. You just have to manage expectations for games you want to play. Otherwise, it would be a good functional project build. Pretty cheap considering what use you might get out of it. Do it if you have the cash to spend!

Is your Optiplex 760 SFF? Smaller than this tower? Double check that there are only 2 SATA connections on the motherboard. If there are more, you can purchase a "SATA Y Power Splitter." This will allow you to power another hard drive or SSD. If you only have 2 SATA ports on the board and want to keep the optical drive in, maybe look into a PCI card like this: www.amazon.com/IO-Crest-Port-PCI-Express-SY-PEX40039/dp/B005B0A6ZS I have seen dual SATA cables somewhere online, but I have never tried one and wouldn't necessarily recommend one. As for RAM, it's fairly inexpensive to get 2GB 887MHz DDR2 RAM. Look on Aliexpress or eBay for deals. Maybe a local repair shop will have some lying around. If you have four RAM slots, max it out to 4 x 2GB = 8GB.

Yes definitely. The GT 210 is not a great choice, more a GPU reference for the video in retrospect. What does your budget look like? A GT 1030 is a decent middle of the road card. As time goes on and with continuous use, writing data to a hard drive and using it to execute commands, etc, will lead to a slower experience operating Windows (or any other OS). There are many things you can do for maintenance, but perhaps in the short term you could think about backing up your important data and "resetting" Windows. As in, can you confirm that it was taken out of the box, only used to install Windows on, and then shipped to you? Perhaps your drive is having trouble aligning with your system as it was likely installed on a different type of setup. Can you live with the speed? Make it work? I am checking the hardware you mention and there is no basis to call what you did "an upgrade". The GPU you use for the "upgrade" is as obsolete or even more than the desktop itself, the CPU is the same low tier as the computer was marketed in it's more basic versions, and the 160Gb hdd??? Give us a break! Who was using 160GB HDDs in 2009? Then the Win10. Microsoft does not let you simply reinstall Win7 as is is obsolete. It directs you to hassle free Win10 installation and you have legit Operating system. The only upgrade you did was the SSD. Which would barely let you run the computer to realize how borderline useless the machine is in your basic configuration and why people were dumping them to the curbs like crazy. Which is injustice to the incredibly versatile optiplexes from the end of the socket 775 generation. Because if you did your homework, you might showcase what the upper limits of these computers are. I am talking about SSD/HDD of usable size; quad core CPUs - even Xeon, possibly with microcode injection to overcome compatibility issues; non-obsolete GPU, say gt710 or gt740; 16GB of RAM. With such configuration you could you could justly use the word "upgrade" and so upgraded machine could show its competitive edge not only a year ago when you shot this clip, but for the next few years as well.
@HaisteComputerRepair
@HaisteComputerRepair 2 года назад
Yes, I could have installed a better CPU, GPU, and larger capacity HDD. But, this is a tutorial on how to install upgrades (in my case it was spare parts) not how to max out a Dell Optiplex 760. You don't have to prove to me or anyone else in the comments that you could do a better upgrade. I believe you. Make a video doing it and share it here. Or contribute some suggestions in a tone that is not condescending. I would have loved to talk to you about that, or, even pin the comment. Read through all the comments here, we are all amicable and sharing. Your choice of words is not conducive to education and could lead to turning someone away from learning about computers. If you approached me in real life like this, what good would it do? It would be so much better to collaborate and share knowledge. By they way, I used an older Windows 7 key to activate Windows 10. It seems I did not mention this. Don't let my reply turn you off, please share your experience with these towers if you can be respectful.
