What laptop do you have right now? 🤔 CORRECTION 1: Undervolting won't damage your laptop, but can cause BSODs and crashes. Generally -100mv is safe) CORRECTION 2: It was actually a crappy Killer WiFi chip on the 9570, I replaced it with a good Intel chip. My mistake! But the Killer chip here works well.
Hey Tom quick question: Do you know whether or not if the 7950's and 9570's panel assembly are interchangable? Love to have that proper front facing camera if given the possibility to just change part of my machine recommended by you
I'm an armchair grandma, who spends my day watching RU-vid videos, checking and sending email, and catching Netflix. I also journal when the mood strikes, but that's about it. I have found that the Chromebook is the best laptop for me because it does everything I require any laptop to do. I enjoy watching your channel from time to time, pretending that I understand all of the technical stuff you put in your videos. To be absolutely honest though, I really like your accent!
Returned my XPS15 7590 (OLED) today. The screen itself was incredibly beautiful, everything popped and media was a joy to watch. Unfortunately thermals were catastrophic... I achieved a stable undervolt of -0.115v on CPU and undervolted + underclocked the GPU, testing with fans forced to be at 100%, setup laptop on cold surface and this device was unable to operate with normal temps under light use. Having multiple applications open (Chrome w 10+ tabs, word, excel, outlook) in a work situation had CPU bouncing off its temp limit. Light gaming at 1080p on 8+ year old games (eg Diablo 3 low settings) caused thermal throttling after 2mins of playtime. Yes I understand that this is not a gaming laptop, but spending $3500+ AUD you would expect it to do some basics. When not throttled, the 1650gtx has enough juice to give me 200+fps, but when throttled drops to 300mhz and 5-10fps. First time trying Dell, also the last.
Go for the Lenovo X1 extreme, it has the same specks but better built quality, less weight, better thermals, better reliability, and better performance.
Dell have made this the default Windows alternative to the MacBook Pro, it makes sense to retain the same design with a few tweaks. It's annoying buying a Windows laptop only to find it looking obsolete in a couple of years time, which is the case with other manufacturers laptops.
XPS 15 9570 user here! I bought the laptop about a year ago and it's held up perfectly! Super smooth, super fast, looks beautiful, battery lasts forever, and gaming gets me over 60 fps easy. Matte non-touch screen, i7 chip, and Nvidia GeForce. I'd recommend this laptop to literally anybody looking for a lightweight but powerful laptop
So one year after purchasing my dell XP’s 15 9570 back in 2019 I found out that this laptop has so many performance problems. You need to constantly dust the inside of it to prevent the laptop from overheating and reapply cooling paste. If you are not knowledgeable about computer hardware do not purchase from dell. This video only covers it out of the box not a year later. I used this channel and several others to help influence my decision what laptop to buy and am really disappointed that it never discussed how the laptops perform years later. After my warranty expired within a year I was faced with so many problems meanwhile my hp envy back from 2013 is having less internal problems.
Same boat as you. Mine has GPU fan rattling, and oervheated CPU throttling continuously. And of course, as you mention, after one year, Dell won't even sell you replacement parts (you need to buy random compatible parts on Chinese websites). Shame for a "premium" laptop.
@@xrochefr what was your solution to fix your cpu throttling and high temperatures? I just ordered some cooling paste and going to try to apply that again. I noticed a significant increase in performance when I cleaned the dust out of my fan but it was still not the same when I first got it.
The Dell XPS 15's striking with that 4k OLED display having an Intel Core i9 CPU and GTX 1650 GPU. Wow, I'm amazed as its beauty and powerful setup. With most Dell XPS laptops, I'm sure it has excellent battery life. Dell hasn't made much redesign for 4 years :-: Usually, they have weak audio and touchpad could be better imo.
Thanks for the review. I bought the 7590 on a Black Friday special, and found it really good. It deals with Visual Studio and SSMS well. I'd also like to say the FHD matt screen is really good for visibility, with superb lighting.
I bought the 7590 with touch 4k display, 16 gig RAM and 500gig SSD. The Killer Wifi card is HORRIBLE --every 20-30 minutes it drops. There is some decent coil whine (it doesn't REALLY bother me too much though), the battery lasts about 5 hours with the 4k model. I'd get the i7 and not the I9. The track pad/touch pad is really 'squirrely.' I have have to shutoff any gesture functions in the touchpad to make it usable. Dell techs have 'worked' with me on the wifi issues for about a week. I'm really itching to send the laptop back because I don't see a use in ME buying a new Intel wifi card for a new computer.
I got the 9575 model recently. Still fantastic. The bios update 1.6.1 fixed the sleep issue. i put it to sleep last night by closing the lid at 92% and 10 hours later i had 87% when i resumed.
Correction: Undervolting cannot permanently damage your system. At worst, you will crash/bluescreen, and fix it on the following bootup. Although -.100mV is stable on every laptop I've ever touched anyway (and in fact, manufacturers like Razer and Apple do this out of the box).
Thank you for hitting upon the issues I wanted to hear about. I have been perusing other reviews that have not addressed the screen differences for over an hour. Finally I get the info I wanted, at last.
0:15 - “And also mine has a bunch of grease stains on the palmrest”. This has got the be the single worst thing about the XPS 15, and it’s constant daily maintenance to keep this thing clean. Even worse I’ve had the XPS 14 for 4 years before this thing was unveiled and it had virtually the same palmrest material - 8 years dealing with this and I hate it! I sincerely hope the next XPS 15 palmrest is aluminum or something that doesn’t get immediately caked with fingerprints and grease stains
@BlindMango What makes you think having an aluminum palmrest will make caked on fingerprints and grease stains look any better? If the fingerprints and grease stains have gotten to the point where it is caked on, that's typically a sign to clean it off. Alcohol wipes are not expensive.
To any person who is willing to buy an XPS (not just the 7590), beware of thermal throttling, it's real and it's driving me crazy. My 9560 - as sexy and on-papers powerful as it is - throttles almost as much as the Macbook 2018.
I just found my perfect laptop! Amazing screen, dedicated graphics, amazing design and with corners cut here and there a decent price... thunderbolt 3, good keyboard and trackpad. Id say its a winner. Awesome stuff tech chap. Subbed on insta bdw 😎
I bought the 9570 from the Dell Outlet and used a 14% coupon. Got it for under 1000 USD with the i7-8750H, 8GBs of RAM, and 256GB SSD. Bought 32GB of RAM from amazon and the thing flies. I may upgrade the SSD later this year.
i9 performance with undervolt is good though. After running cinebench r20 10x consecutively, all cores were running at around 3.2 GHz, at temperatures of about 80-82C. The average score was ~ 3376 (max: 3646, min: 3279) This was with an undervolt of -110.4mV and speed shift set to 80. The GPU will still throttle (but refer to the reddit solution using MSI afterburner).
3.2ghz is what they run at when thermal throttling... should be running closer to 4.5ghz while running Cinebench. Should be capable of 5ghz when over clocked,
@@Russh1 The all-core turbo limit is 4.2GHz, so 4.5GHz is not attainable without increasing the turbo limits. Even a huge laptop like the G703GX with i9-9980HK can't sustain 5GHz on all cores (cf. ultrabookreview)
Great Video. I ordered the new XPS 13 9300 with 1080p screen, 16gb memory 512gb SSD hard drive with extended warranty. I thought about it for a few days and looked on dells site again. I ended up ordering last year's XPS 15 7590 from Dell with 4k OLED panel, i7, 32gb memory, Nvidia graphics and 1 TB SSD hard drive and extended warranty for $200 more than I paid for the new XPS 13. For me I don't need the extra power of the XPS 15 but I want the most for my money so I'm glad I rethought this. I'm going to be sending back the XPS 13 when it arrives.
Nice review. I ordered the XPS 7590 and get it tomorrow. They didn't offer an i9 version on the site and after watching the video, and glad I got the i7 9570. Should be good enough as I've been doing all my editing on a Surface Pro 4 with an i5 in it and only 8GB of ram. So, looking forward to the upgrade. I also have their Thunderbolt dock on order since I have 2 4K screens to drive on my desktop.
Mine is great, except for the fact that the oled screen came with an uneven brightnes problem. A technician was sent to replace the screen but the problem still persists. Dell will send me a new laptop, hopefully it will fix the problem for good.
I really enjoyed this video and I think you going into a little more detail made it excellent. This gave a listener lots to think about and also pointed out the issues you were having as well as the differences in the screen types. I will be watching that screen comparison video right now! I have been a subscriber for a while and I always enjoy your videos.
I ordered the XPS 7590 with 1 tb drive I do have a chill pad to help keep it cool so that should be real issue I was looking for a good gaming laptop so ill let you know what I think after a bit of use . It is comming today
I will definitely buy it *through your link* after your thorough testing AND I WILL *ALSO BUY* THE Thinkpad X1 EXTREME GEN2 with 9th gen i9, so will you ALSO review that model config this month or August, please? Thank you 👋👍🙏
Hello! I'm studying photography and I've been watching your videos for a while now. I need a laptop that it'll make editing easier. Would you recommend this 2019 model or last year model?
Your reviews are really good. It addresses issues that are usually left untold. Thanks. Also can you compare this model with HP spectre x360 ips display 15”?
I have a Dell laptop and be warned, it comes with a bloatware program called Smartbyte which actually slows down your internet speed for whatever reason. It might’ve just been my bad laptop, though all things considered, if you are going for a laptop under a thousand dollars, go for the Lenovo Legion.
Even with the i7 model, I had to undervolt both thr CPU and the GPU for it to perform properly. Additionally, it crashes when waking from sleep, I might be able to fix that by Hibernating the laptop instead.
Yah I have the same problem! Waking it up from sleep just closes everything opened before sleep. Is there any negatives having it go hibernation and no sleep? Thanks for any help!
@@Qtipsinear If it's crashing on wakeup, you're probably using the Intel XTU utility to undervolt. Do not use this program, XTU has serious bugs with sleep mode. Download ThrottleStop instead (as shown in this video) and use that instead. All my crashing issues on wakeup went away by doing this.
Matt Merkle agreed, XTU causes crashes whenever the computer goes to sleep, and also often doesn’t apply a preset undervolt at startup and you have to do it manually
XPS 15 users should undervolt their CPU AND GPU themselves for better performance......Every laptop chip is different, All laptops have different undervolt limits that can only be discovered with extensive testing, something that would take too much time on the manufacturing chain...some OEMs just apply a -100mv undervolt to their CPUs which should work for 95% to 99% of laptops......My current Laptop (Aero 15) has a maximum stable undervolt of (-135mv)....(-140 to -168) will crash randomly.....(-169) and more will cause instant crashing. My previous laptops had limits of -125, -110, -150, -170 (highest ever). I undervolted my 80W GTX 1060. It does base boost clock of 1670 at 900mv........to 1890 around 1150mv.......I literally turned it into a 60W 1060 max-q (loses 10% performance) I looked up the 1060 max-q, it has a maximum clock speed of around 1480mhz.......So I played with the voltage curve and limited it from 1670 to 1480 max clock speed.....at 0.750mv.......150mv below the 900mv of the default 1670. The results are amazing.......Playing Assasins Creed Origins at stock......GPU was pulling about 75 to 78W average......around 87W max/peak. Now when gaming it pulls about 52W to 55W average (62W is the maximum/peak power I've ever seen now. so 1) Turning my 80W 1060 into a 60W 1060 max-q via a msi afterburner profile. 2) Undervolting my i7-8750H by -135mv core, -135mv cache, -125mv intel igpu. 3) And also limiting my CPU from 3.9Ghz to 3.5Ghz with throttlestop when gaming. 4) Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut repaste. When gaming with default fans (never max)....CPU temps stay in the 75 to 78C range. GPU stays in the 72 to 77C range. The laptop body feels warm, never hot.......and the fans are inaudible with the speakers active. All this and I can still play AAA games at high settings 60fps......Thin and light gaming laptops are awesome....but they need tuning and a lot of TLD (Tender Loving Care).
If you go on the dell website now there is the 4k OLED version with 1TB SSD and 16G RAM for £1,750 there's a deal right now, make use! Cheaper than amazon :) I returned my FHD which was nearly the same price!!!
The Tech Chap Hi Tom, just bought the one you recommended, i7, 16GB, 512GB OLED, from John Lewis had quite a few vouchers to use up. Wanted to ask, how have you found it after a few months on? Have you had any issues? Do you recommend upgrading the ram and the ssd to the evo plus?
Nice review on the XPS 15 7590, as a user of the previous model XPS 15 9570, who is a bit unhappy with it, I have a few questions: 1. Is the 7590 slow to POST? On my 9570, it takes over 22 seconds to get from button press to get to the login screen. My old MSI GS63VR takes 8-10 seconds, and that's with a sata SSD. 2. Did Dell put back the S3 sleep mode? I'm on the latest firmware for the 9570 and they still haven't put it back.
Please add audio as part of the reviews. XPS of old were known for stellar audio and these new XPS 15's have had great displays but the audio was never great.
Audio is 'ok" to bad. The touchpad is also ONLY OK. The touchscreen will makeup for a bad trackpad. I got the touch screen 4k with 16gig ram and 500 gig hd for $1400...so I'm still happy though.
Now it looks superb, but I have had two oleds at Samsung. And after one year there are visible marks. Sorry, but I can accept this on the phone. But not at all at working machine with adobe rgb where I do photos or sensitive thing according to colors etc. Oled will be burned where W10 bar with time etc is...
I was trying to decide which XPS to get im glad i watched this video. I'll stay clear of the i9. The i7 9750 OLED with 512 GB SSD and 16 GB RAM is only $1600. Is that a good deal still? I want to mainly do some light video editing.
I have the 7590 decently specced out, and it is definitely an improvement over the 9570 (I originally owned the 9570 before it died a miserable sad sputtering death after I accidentally spilled liquid all over the keyboard). The 7590 is a better version of it for sure. I fool around with video editing a lot, and this thing just rocks. ROCKS.
A simple undervolting using Intel XTU is harmless. Supplying less voltage to your CPU (or GPU) can decrease temperatures and which in turn gives you more stable performance. I recommend no matter what laptop anyone has to undervolt their laptops
Finally more videos on the 7590. Could you please do a video on how to undervolt the laptop? I have the I9 4K UHD and worried about the temperature. Also can you hear your fan when it boots up?
@@blognewb i9 on a slim laptop is a joke. Any company that releases slim laptops with i9 (like Apple and Dell) are unethical and they just want to rip of their customers. Lenovo is not one of those companies...
I got myself the Inspiron 15 7590 with an i7 9750H, 16 GB of RAM, 512 GB SSD, 4k IPS screen and the GTX1650. What can I say - so glad I didn't go for the XPS. Perfect machine for me and my 3rd Dell computer already. If you are looking for a great Windows laptop - I think this is it. Exactly the same specs as the XPS but around 500 EUR / GBP cheaper.
I bought the XPS 15 i7 9750H with 4k screen, 1650 gpu, 16gb ssd and 512 ssd. This thing is lovely but it still throttled and has hit 100c on the cpu. Undervolting has made maybe a little difference but not a game changer. Shame really as form has seemed to compromise performance and in a premium market, this is a kick to the consumer
@theaboody100 definitely worth it but in my case, I use a Note8 which has an amazing OLED screen with significant burn-in and that doesn't make me hate my 4K backlit LED XPS screen which I use for professional work for any reason.
after all these reviews i bought an xps, BUT unfortunately it has the dreaded freezing trackpad issues which seems to be a known issues but no reviewer has ever mentioned it. will probably have to return it as dell do not seem to have a proper fix. avoid people or check "dell xps trackpad freezing" before buying!!
I just picked this spec up but with the i7 for $1600 locally. I got the i7, 32gb of ram, 1tb ssd, NVIDIA graphics, and that 4K oled screen. I’m really happy with it. For the price, I couldn’t say no to it.
Yes, when it loses the bezel 'chin' like the 13 2020, and gets the Tigerlake/nvidia rtx3000 series update. Miniled wouldn't hurt either with 120hz/144hz. They should also stop with the fake carbon, resize the trackpad, put in better speakers and release a 'space grey' version. Then it would be alot more attractive as a Mac/Razer contender. XPS is currently at the status of the HP Envy and that isnt not so bad, but its not so good either.
i7 still may be a bit hot, I think it is better to go for i5 and for serious computation get a PC workstation or even Xeon server :D Nice review, thanks!
Yanis Yukams no way. If you’re going to buy a a laptop that weighs in at almost 4 1/2 pounds then it better have a lot of power otherwise there are other lighter options out there.
Hey guys. So I'm looking to purchase a Dell XPS 15 7950 pretty soon. I recently had a Macbook Pro 15 (2013 model), but unfortunately that died on me. I loved the screen of that one to bits - it was gorgeous. Unfortunately I have eyes that are kinda sensitive/not that great, but the Macbook was perfect for them. I have borrowed a Lenovo V330 in the interim and I can't stand the quality of the screen. I don't know if it's the contrast or the colours, but it's unbearable for me - I can't go more than ten minutes without a headache forming, and for my job I'm on it all day. However, the Lenovo is a FHD screen, and so is the Dell XPS that I want (I really, really don't want the 4K - out of my price range and reflection/glossy issues). So my question is, is the FHD screen of the Dell XPS very good? Are the colours decent, the black levels crisp? You can tell I'm not a techy as any correct terminology is beyond me xD I just don't want to spend out a whole bunch of money only for the screen to be as bad as the Lenovo I'm using. I'd really appreciate some advice! Thank you all! :D
@@brev5003 And I have an MSI 17 inch with all the bells and whistles and my Dell XPS studio from 2009 was made so much better that I vowed to stick with Dell. Its night and day the build quality. That piece of shit MSI's screen split in half and had dents all over it bc of the shitty thin metal it's made with. Dell's are made very, very well.
Esa Elias If your buying this type of laptop, I doubt sound quality is a deal breaker. Yr either hooking externals or using wireless earphones like normal people
Mine is on the way, will get it in 2 days, chose the i9 4k IPS version because touch is crucial for me. 4 k is overkill imo... FHD is a bit too dull, no idea why they dont make 1440p screens on such laptops... Overall. Perfect laptop imo (on paper at least) haven’t touched it jet ;) Nice reviews though, you helped a lot on the choice
Can't agree more. What year do they live in? How are they going to compete against MS Surface Laptop and all these Matebooks? 16:9 in top ultrabooks is a total bullshit these days.
Yes, a reliable modern laptop. We got two for testing USB-C Hub, especially USB-C to dual HDMI MST Hub. They still works well bearing heavy testing work everyday.
@The Tech Champ What do you think about the new Vostro 7510 which has a deal right now? I am thinking to buy that one but there is no reviews yet. i7-11800H - 16GB Ram - NVIDIA® GeForce RTX™ 3050 Ti 4GB GDDR6. I mainly wanted to use it for business and coding.
2:20 Wifi: Just my personal experience with the 7590: University wifi: stable. Home wifi: unstable connection (whereas other laptops don’t drop connection). Replaced the card with Intel AC 9260. Problems gone. Also Now I can dual-Boot Pop_OS without problems and have WiFi under Linux. Otherwise you‘d need to update the Kernel.
in terms of the wifi issue people saw very fixes by uninstalling the Killer software drives and installing the Intel ones since the 7590s wifi chipset is just a rebranded chip. and it's better the AC 9260(Killer AC 1550)
Awesome review, I just got the IPS/LCD version myself and it's incredible. I went with that over OLED since I do more static photography editing over video editing, so I like the AdobeRGB color accuracy. The OLED does look better when it comes to movie watching. But screen burn in scared me. I leave my laptop on for days at a time annd didn't want to risk it.
Hey great review. I got myself an XPS15 with the spec you recommend recently on the back of it. You mention upgrading the RAM from 16gb to 32gb. I have seen your other video and the recommended RAM isn’t available on Amazon. What RAM would you recommend to upgrade the new XPS15
