Lisa Gade reviews the 2015 Dell XPS 15 with the UHD 4K display. We look at the top of the line model that sells for $2,500, though the 4K model starts at $2,000. The XPS 15 UHD has the 2.3 GHz Core i7-4712 Intel 4th generation Haswell quad Core 28 watt processor, as do most mobile workstations. It is thinner and considerably lighter than most workstations and competes with the 15” Retina MacBook Pro, HP Omen 15 and even the Razer Blade to a certain extent. The machine has switchable graphics with Intel HD 4600 integrated graphics and the NVIDIA GT 750M 2GB DDR5 dedicated graphics. It’s available with up to 16 gigs of RAM, an HDD or mSATA SSD, dual band WiFi 802.11ac, Bluetooth and a very good backlit keyboard. The 4.4 lb. (2.01kg) laptop is made of aluminum and carbon fiber. Yesterday i bought the dell Inspiron 7548 4K model. From the look of it, It seems like this might be very simular to this model but a lot cheaper: The 4k screen is lovely. The razor sharp text is just very fun to read. It brings the mobile PPI experience to laptops.

Great review as usual. I love glossy screens, things look so much sharper, and with the brightness we can get these days reflection is not much of an issue. Pictures just look outstanding. You never commented on the noise, with 2 fans and a i7 this thing is probably very noisy. I have a Sony Vaio 15" with an i7 and I can't wait to get rid of it. This thing is noisier than my desktop. When playing videos I can't even hear the videos because of the fan noise. I'm waiting when more fanless notebooks reach the market.

I still think of laptops as mobile devices, not as home/office machines to be almost permanently docked. Given this, I'd never buy a $2,500+ laptop. I'd be too concerned about it being stolen or clunked one time too many in my backpack. I'd rather keep the good stuff safe at home and travel about with something nice but so nice that I'd be devastated if something bad happened to it.

kefkapalazzo1 No, Windows doesn't run slow on the Mac, but the drivers aren't super-great as they are when running Mac OS X. More heat, less battery life...

You should also look up the new upcoming Think Pad P50 with 4K displays. I have had Think Pad since 2012 and I'm going to wait for their release in Q4 to move to this new one.

Hey Lisa! I hope you'll review the new XPS 15 with infinity display when it comes out in a few months. Odd that they're refreshing the device so soon after this iteration, but no complaints here. It's between the new XPS and the MBP for me, so a comparison would also be appreciated :)

If you want something with similar specs but MUCH cheaper check out the Dell Inspiron 15. Its not as good looking as the XPS but it costs almost $1000 less

This is a good machine. Excellent display. However, if you use VMWare a lot, this is not the machine you want. VMWare is not up to date on hosting 4k displays on laptops and things are extremely slow when using virtual machines and icons, text, very small.

I'm going to school for Mechanical engineering and am really thinking about buying this laptop as I don't really want to carry a heavy workstation laptop around every day. I'm just wondering though, you say this laptop does suffice a college studnt's work on CAD... Does that mean it will be laggy on CAD or it will handle it well? Along with all the other programs engineers use. You reply will be greatly appecriated. And if you have a suggestion for a mechanical engineer student, I would appreciate that as well. I will have my bachelors in 2 years.

Despite the amazing specs etc etc, I've never been a fan of any 14+ inch laptops because they're better on a desk than to carry. If I had a chance to be given an XPS 15 or 13, I'd of course choose the beautiful XPS 13 or receive the 15 then sell it for a 13

saharahgaiht Native next gen video format. Screen real estate is also useful when working in programs like PS, Protools and the likes. Photographers would even appreciate higher resolution, like 8k. Gaming to some degree, of course mostly older titles like the new KOTOR on steam for example or some MMO:s would probably work too like WOW. But of course you already know all this. Its basic knowledge. But you are ignoring real application use in many areas just by asking such a trivial question. Lame...

Can laptop manufactures stop putting the fans on the bottom of the device since if you're using it on a bed, which a lot of people do, the device can't adequately ventilate.

Ive been using a mbp 2010 for heavy art/design work, some editing, and occasional gaming through bootcamp. Even though XPS is $2500 maxed, it seems to be better AND cheaper than a maxed rMBP, which is $3200! The XPS still has more ports, touch screen, and can be upgraded (vs sealed mbp). I am seriously considering jumping ship because of value (and not having to rely on bootcamp for occasional gaming (1080p is ok with me), I have no strong bias as I like both OS (though have a slight preference for mac). I am also considering a gaming laptop with better GPU, but they seem to lack good LCD panels and general build quality. I feel so torn on what to upgrade to, please help with any thoughts!

How does the amount of Ghz translate to processor strength? Is it linear ? I'm going to assume my four year old MBP does NOT have a better processor inside (2.4 Ghz). But then how does it work ?

It really depends on a lot of different factors such as processor size, amount of cores, the different lineups (if intel) of processors, and a whole slew of other factors... But generally speaking it is not linear but exponential in the preformance gains to gigahertz. (meaning you get less and less power from each subsequent gigahertz that you add on).

Just don't buy this notebook. I got one for one of my customers recently. We send it back the 3rd time now to DELL because of problems with the touchpad (Gets worn out quickly, right buttons doesnt work anymore properly) and the nice top also was worn out very quick (+ it gets easily dirty, which is annoying for a such expensive notebook) Also the support from DELL isnt the best, eventho the XPS lineup was atleast once quiet a premium model :/

Dear Lisa, I need your help. I'm opting for core i5, 8gbram, 1tb hd +32gb ssd and 1080p display. Now I need to know that can I upgrade this 32gb ssd to 512gb ssd while keeping the 1TB HHD? What I do know that's not possible with your review unit because of bigger battery.

Neil Nitin I'm with you. I think it looks tacky when there's tons of open space on the board. The filling quaility of the numeric pad made everything come together in my opinion.

+Neil Nitin Recently a lot of laptops are starting to include wide margins on the side of the keyboard. Its a new trend; something to do with typing ergonomics.
