Art Sak That's the way I'd do it if I could afford. Love Apple laptops, but would always keep my desktop PC. Can't afford a Macbook though at the moment.
Yeah, the reason I really like it is because it's so sleek. I'm not even talking about the MacBook Air sleekness, just MacBook Pro. Compared to other laptops I've tried, it's aluminum case just feels sturdy and not cheap. I think it's the perfect laptop for doing general tasks, but it'll never take over my rig for gaming. Eventually, I will get one, because I'm lacking it a mobile computing solution. Edit: to be honest though, I'm not a huge fan of Apple's other products, but I believe that what they make is of the highest quality, so I give them that regard.
***** i don't know if your custom built PC is crap or if you are lying, but a mac with 4GB does not run as snappy as a 16GB ram. i don't know why fanboys are so deluded. macs are nothing special.
shweebeez No the new version of the xps 15 with the infinity edge is base model of $999. The 1200 version has the specs i listed. A TB hard drive and a gtx 960m. The base for mbp is 1300 which is only a 13 inch laptop and to get a better gpu and 15 inch laptop you have to get the $2000 model which has a intel iris pro gpu and $2499 for the one with the AMD Radeon R9 M370X. So it is not irrelevant. The mbp is overpriced not the xps.
shweebeez okay fine lets go with the one with 4k and touch screen and 256 gb ssd and a gtx 960m which is 2000 same as the base model of a mbp 15 inch which has a less powerful gpu and isnt touch screen. SO tell me how the xps is overpriced while the mbp isnt? same price but one has a better gpu 4k and touch screen
It amazes me that DELL doesn't still use JBL sound. The speakers on my 4 year old XPS 15 with "JBL Sound" is incredible!~ Highs, lows and you can FEEL the stereo separation.
I have both XPS 15 and MBP retina, and to be honest, I prefer the XPS 15 even doe I'm an apple user. The reason why I like it more than my MBP retina is because windows is a little bit easier to use and you have like, more apps and that stuff. (At least some coding programs work better with windows). And the other reason is because windows 10, looks really awesome. It's just my opinion, both are good laptops.
Hi! First of all I love your reviews I don't know why ( maybe because you look like my mom ) but I trust you . I want to ask if windows on a mac book have any serious problems , because I want a MacBook but many of programs I use (as an engineering student ) don't have Mac versions .
John CrouStoN I wouldn't buy a Mac to exclusively run Windows, but it's fine for using Parallels VM or Boot Camp for those occasional Windows programs you need. With the 15" MBP with dedicated graphics power and heat management aren't very good. With lower power integrated graphics Macs, it's not as much of an issue.
I've owned the 2013 versions of both these laptops. XPS had a better screen (better brightness, contrast, even backlighting, although not as accurate as the Mac), was cheaper (lots of discounts), better keyboard, and stood out from the crowd since it wasn't a Mac. Macbook Pro had better build quality (Dell had a few issues like coil whine, crackling speaker and uneven gaps), much better trackpad, and faster SSD. Performance and battery life were identical.
The MacBook is the clear winner here. Cheaper Faster CPU Faster GPU Faster flash storage Better battery life Better trackpad And imo, better build too. The only thing the dell has over the Mac is the display.
James Campbell what do you think about the better windows experience (you know windows is popular), better keyboard, more usb port, removable hardware, and the touch screen?
Yicheng Wang Windows does not scale as well with high dpi as os x, and both of these have very high resolutions, and the macbook has 2 thunderbolt ports while the xps 15 does not. The touch screen and possibly better keyboard is nice, but does not justify the worse performance and battery life as well as a higher price.
Yicheng Wang I just see this, but uhhh, what? Better keyboard? Yeah, um, no. Also, Windows is only good for Windows specific apps. Other than that, it's literally cancer. Also, the rMBP comes with 2 UBS ports. Why would you even need more than that? Also, more USB ports doesn't outweigh better performance.
I suppose the best argument for getting the 15" Retina MacBook Pro over nearly anything else is this: the MacBook can run the latest version of both OS X and Windows perfectly. You can choose to have an all OS X MacBook, an all Windows MacBook, or you can dual boot both systems. There isn't a single equivalent Windows laptop that can dual boot OS X perfectly. And even when you have a well running Hackintosh, you lack the ease of simply upgrading it. Only a MacBook offers that kind of versatility.
***** I get where you're coming from, but size for both the product and the charger matter when it's a portalbe, as both these laptops should be. It's not a make or break, but it's something to take into consideration.
The proffesional version of the XPS (Dell Precision M3800) is basically the same, but with Quadro Graphics (K1100M) and the mini display port has the option for a thunderbolt aswell.
Your reviews rock as usual. Thanks for commenting on the noise level, it’s very important for many heavy users like me, mainly in a machine that people probably in need of such horsepower is going to put through some heavy duty usage. I guess I’m getting old and comfort level is becoming more important to me and I want to protect my hearing for my old age (noise is the reason I’m replacing 2 of my notebooks). I also find annoying to have to pump up the volume when watching your videos for example :) . Thanks for commenting on the screen: glossy or matte. I’m surprised that some writers of reviews forget to mention that. Another point that is very important to me as I much prefer glossy unlike most people (I guess). I’m having difficulties finding 4K monitors that are glossy as many manufacturers are moving into the matte direction (e.g. Dell). Finally, I appreciate your recommendation on not using Windows on Parallels. I run financial applications that just run on Windows, but of course I love the Apple products. Many times I felt very tempted to make the jump, but was afraid with issues with drivers, etc. I guess I will stick with Windows!
It's amazing that this late in the day some windows laptops have god awful touchpads. I set up a Acer for a lady a few weeks ago and to me the touchpad was unusable.
brian whittle I fully agree. I bought the new Dell xps 13 a month ago, coming from a 2012 macbook pro 15 retina, and I'm going to sell the Dell as soon as I can. This trackpad is unacceptable and even with the touchsreen it's no where near as good as the Mac.
Jus bought that same xps, and it's going back asap! Been using apple for years now and will continue on as these dells and all other PC laptops are just garbage
brian whittle It's mostly down to Windows. It doesn't actually support trackpads (seriously). It's all treated as a mouse. They're finally changing this in Windows 10 (its a fucking joke it's taken them this long though).
Lisa the Audio preset you are using would affect the Audio quality for RU-vid videos you should either use the music or max sense preset since the movie preset adds Bass to simulate the feel of a cinema
Thank you so much for this video! I was stuck in chosing between exactly these two beauties and now I can buy a new Mac without thinking I might have wasted my money because I could have gotten a 4k display... :)
Lisa, it is so hard to remember performance numbers as you read them and the specs out. Could your video guy please put results in titles on the screen as you present them verbally..beside each system? Thanks
just a thought.. how about putting some more effort into making those videos? how about some simple titles/graphics when you talk about benchmark numbers?
When prices are the same MacBook every time. In the sound/music production you're actually able to save money. Logic is $200. It only runs on Mac. Pro Tools , cubase, cakewalk, ableton live, in their full versions are all around $500+ with additional plug in cost. I've spent all my life in the Windows environment and am just realizing this on the cost side.
I have a 2010 MBP. I was gonna buy the 2015 MBP, but I can't justify $2000 to get better gaming performance since my old model runs everything else perfectly.
Nice hardware review. Thanks. I would be interested to see an operating systems and applications software extension of it, including comments about the XPS model's performance running Windows 10, Linux, and Windows 10 within Linux virtual environments versus the MacBook model's performance running its native OS and Windows 10 within Parallels or Linux. Including multiple monitors via Dell's docking station and Apple's analogous solution would be much appreciated, too. Cheers.
Hi! I'm looking for the Dell XPS 15. I saw in a few videos that the case bends a little where the aluminium meets the fiber carbon, and it shakes a little on the table in the angles. Do you notice that on your own model?
***** If they make matte screen with FHD screen with adobeRGB and on the end WIndows 10 have a scaling like a mac OS - yes. Until then no... I really dont like apple for their IDEA, but at this momemnt, when i have 2000 usd on new laptop for cad and photoshop i will choose MacBook pro :((((. Retards fromlenovo, hp and dell ruined their mobile workstations with latest series. So i have no choice.
aceviewier The Razer Blade 14 (2015) costs $2700, and has a QHD+ (3200x1800) IGZO screen with amazing color quality and viewing angles, and is also a 10-point capacitive multi-touch screen. While it's not matte, it's still an amazing screen. It's not 4K, so there shouldn't be many problems with scaling, and even then, there are easy workarounds. It is 0.70 inches thick. For comparison, the Macbook Pro in this video is 0.71 inches thick. The Razer Blade runs Windows 8.1, whereas the Macbook Pro runs Mac OS X. Both are amazing operating systems with different features and different target audiences, but Windows has way more compatibility with software and hardware; in the world of technology and the area of graphic design, this is important as it allows you to easily connect your graphics tablet and other peripherals without fear of incompatibility. As for stability, as far as I've tested, Adobe Flash crashed just about as much on Mac OS X as on Windows 8.1. In the end, I guess it depends on user preference, though I would lean towards Windows. The CPU on the Razer Blade is also a quad-core i7 (i7-4720HQ, up to 3.6GHz). It is slightly weaker than what comes in the Macbook Pro at the exact same price ($2700) (i7-4980HQ, up to 4.0GHz), but benchmarks show that both are similar in performance. The GPU is where the Razer Blade shines: the Razer Blade's Nvidia GTX 970M absolutely dominates the Macbook Pro's AMD Radeon R9 370X/Nvidia GT 750M. This works in favor of the Razer Blade because of way better performance in video games and, more importantly for you, better GPU acceleration in your graphics programs. Razer has also proven to have used top-tier materials and research in the production of their laptops in order to ensure maximum efficiency. This ranges from the material used in the construction, to the direction of heat and thermal flow in the laptop itself, down to the top-notch thermal compounds used in cooling the chips. This cannot be said for Apple, where component overheating is still an issue. I hope I have addressed most of your concerns, and have at least given you more insight as to picking your next laptop.
I like the Mac Pro, but the utilization and implementation of most software goes to windows. Secondly, let's not even talk about upgrade ability which goes hands down to Dell. Thirdly, for the price of the Mac, you could build a windows desktop that would blow the Mac Pro's socks off...lol
Is it smart to buy a 2015 apple macbook 15 inch amd version in March of 2016.... It seems dated, but Apple states that there wont be any update till atleast September of 2016.
I bought the 2014 dell xps 15 , and i sell it because it makes loud noise even when I'm just browsing web ! It's annoying! Does MacBook Pro make loud noise ???
I'm looking for a new laptop for photography. Mostly using Photoshop editting big file sizes and I'm torn between these two laptops. I've never used an Apple product for computing before and this is what's putting me off. I'm worried I won't know what im doing with a MacBook because I'm so use to Windows. I've heard the XPS has issues with fan noise being way too loud.
Trust me, you will LOVE The MacBook. I've recently made the switch to a MacBook Air and I knew everything in less than a month. If you do have any problems you can use boot camp to boot into Windows or parallels to run Windows and Mac OS X side by side. You won't regret the MacBook, trust me.
Lisa, do you know of any videos available demonstrating a 2015 15-inch Macbook Pro Retina, w/ AMD Graphics being used with a 4k display? Having difficulty locating one. Thanks.
Should I get this new Dell XPS 15 with InfinityEdge 4K Display, the brand new Microsoft Surface Book or the 27-inch IMac Retina 5K Display? Which one is the best? Is there any other upcoming release better than these ones?
or u could get the dell xps 15 with 3k screen (instead of 4k) and same exact specs (intel 4712HQ quad core cpu, 16 GB RAM, 512 GB SSD etc) for $1800 at the Microsoft store, instead of $2500 at the dell store
My MacBook Pro mid 2010 is dying and I can't afford either of these machine :( probably gonna get Alienware alpha... Coz I'm still on PS3 and not gonna get ps4 either.
Lisa I was wondering what would be better for college? Im going to college for computer engineering and I would like your honest opinion or if it would a different computer than these two...
Guys i am an architect and i was wondering which one if these two is more suitable for me. For handling a great work load at the same time. And a long lifespan. I use Cad programs (Autocad, rhino) , photoshop, illustrator etc. And i play games from time to time, such as Assassin's Creed. Any help will be much appreciated. Thank you.
Lisa, if you had a workstation PC at home and needed a light laptop for web browsing, some work with google docs etc, what would you choose? I'm thinking a retina MBP 13" or a 12" MacBook but I can't figure out what would be best.
Bora Markovic I'm used to high density monitors and I've had a macbook air in the past so I'm not really interested in getting one. I just got a job after years of being unemployed so I'm gonna spoil myself haha. Although if this years MBA had a higher res display and a force touch trackpad, I'd get that without question.
I am torn between buying another Dell or a mac. Ive had my dell for over 6 years now. its a 15 inch. still runs great! but its soooo heavy!! and Im a nursing student Sooooo another dell orr shall I change over to mac? in scared to choose =x I do alottt of word docs and save a lot of photos n vids n do a lot of research. Recommendations??
Don't know if you bought a notebook yet but I personally use a windows machine as my main desktop and I use the 12 inch MacBook as my mobile notebook, I just feel Apple does a better job with notebooks while windows is much better for a desktop home setup. Couldn't go wrong with either to be honest.
Sorry, I really want to know that , is the Dell laptop's battery life working efficiently ( because my cheaper cheaper Dells were so freaky , the battery life went down about 5% at a time ) hahah but hopefully this expensive Dell might be built with a durable battery !
i really like 4k or retina display, but i work with laptop only for internet, writing documents and watching movies but i do not need on 4k laptop the latest i9 core and super duper upgrades, its more for gaming, videos editing and programms. the fuck
My Dell XPS-15 is one of the original, bought "new" but factory re - furbished at half the original price. Dell prices drop easily. Does Apple's? The terabyte HDD has been replaced with a new Samsung SSD, latest model. The mSATA original SSD, probably will not need upgrading. The battery after so many years will be user upgraded. So many third party retailers have replacement batteries at low prices now. Can Apple users do all this? Despite all my USB3 sockets I also run a USB3 port hub, to minimize the un-plugging wear and tear on the computer's physical sockets. Superficial reviews will miss the fact that nVidia and others are upgrading the software. Brightness, gamma, color balance are handled by software. Both computers feature this. Like all computers with inbuilt fan cooling, easy access to internal cleaning is needed. Otherwise we have an unreliable, throwaway piece of rubbish. Dell has easy cleanliness. Apple?
So your saying that because dells laptop prices drop quick, it's a good thing?? Hahaha, I would rather buy a Mac, and be able to still sell it for loads a year on
I know I am a bit late but if you are going to use linux, the dell xps is the best choice. In theory, the macbook *should* run linux but you would need to mess around with it a bit more and use refind not bootcamp
