The final conclusion here is just perfect with how I interpret Spamton. He is SLEAZY. It's one of his primary traits. He perverts innocent things into being dirty. From a textual sense, sexually implicative. But from a subtextual sense, perverting the ideals of Undertale into being twisted.

Spamton wanting LV also works well with his definition of "workout", telling Kris in the weird route to try a little "workout" and calling NEO a "workout-ready body"
When you first meet Spamton (as shown here 1:08:27) he remarks about how you're "all alone on a late night", projects about how you've been abandoned by all your friends, and in turn offers you a deal for "lonely hearts like you." 'Love' works so well here 😎 Great theory!
Toby's knowledge of pop culture is very vast. Despite the fact that "lonely hearts" now gets mostly associated with The Beatles due to their album, the term used to be about the personal ads section of the newspaper. Perfect thing for Spamton to say and I'm sure it gets glossed over (I certainly did until you quoted him here).
I really like how Love Theory actually also works in a more literal sense from Spamton's perspective: Hyper -> more than average, love is a strong emotion; Link -> love does connect people; Blocked -> referencing how he never got to experience love. Hyperlink Blocked -> He never got to experience that strong connection to others, AKA the reasoning behind Love Theory.
9-3-23 This theory would connect the literal meaning of the parts of "Hyperlink Blocked" and the meaning that represents "Love/LV". It's both the literal meaning of the parts of "Hyper - Link -Blocked" meaning of being prevented from having a strong connection to others. Plus, what is a hyperlink in the computer terminology? A thing which connects one file or website to another. The link points to something else, allowing for the computer to go to that other location. And Spamton G. Spamton wants to have the freedom to do anything/go anywhere. Plus, it would match up with how much he hates the [Clown Around Town], Jevil. Jevil had his own "freedom", only to get himself locked up. He gave up his freedom, while Spamton wants it.
If Spamton is saying "You want it. You want "LOVE", don't you." then it also sounds eerily similar to early Flowey dialogue at the start of Undertale: "What's LV stand for? Why LOVE, of course! *You want some LOVE don't you* ?"

I feel like breaking down and exploring Kris and Noelle's romantic connection in the Snowgrave Route is sort of the opposite of shipping. It's possibly the most messed up relationship in the franchise. Spamton's encouragement of it only becomes his undoing. By the player's intervention Kris goes from a shy, weird, kinda creepy kid to a downright psychopath. The implications of this being the way to romance Noelle... it's alarming
It sadly makes sense. Noelle is young and naive, which makes her especially susceptible to manipulation and abuse tactics. I think it works very well in contrast with the normal route, where Noelle and Susie are learning about love in a normal teenager way. This makes me wonder as well about the theory that the story is about Susie. After all, the first chapter is all about the theme of not having choices and following a single plotline while the secret boss rejects those concepts. But while in that chapter the player can't make choices, Susie can since she is the main motor of change in the story. Interestingly, Snowgrave isn't just a genodice route, but also gives the player the choice to try and take away the theme from Susie: it's supposed to be where she discovers and explores her feelings for Noelle, but instead the player can push Kris onto her. I am very curious to see if this will be a theme with each chapter.
Even worse, you can still hit on Susie while doing the weird route. Which aligns with Kris own desires, and he reacts exactly the same. And Even spamton calls Noelle a side chick.

Spamton doesn't plan to take Kris's soul from the beginning. He thinks the robot body will give him what he wanted, then he realizes he's still 'held up by strings', and decides to just take Kris's soul as a last resort.
I used to write off any attempt to give [hyperlink blocked] any particular meaning, but “love” works so well in literally every situation it’s used that it would make less sense if [hyperlink blocked] didn’t mean love. While most other words suggested seem pretty forced in “soak in the X” and “a little bit of X in the morning” using “love” in those sentences makes them sound perfectly natural, like something people would say in real life. The “making love” innuendo is a bit of clever writing that couldn’t not be intentional.
I've always figured that, In Normal Route Spamton NEO, he did obtain SOME sort of freedom. Notice how he never mentions [Hyperlink Blocked] on his normal route Neo fight. I'm pretty sure the quote "I have just... the thing... you need... [HYPERLINK BLOCKED]" refers to Love, LV, EXP, or something along those lines. It also makes sense given the context of the snowgrave.
Oh my, I always assumed that [Hyperlink Blocked] was freedom or something but the Love-LOVE double meaning is both keeping the single meaning while being far more flexible than the other ones. Most of your theories are a hard sell for me but this one is cheaper than free.

Feel like it’s important to remember that the internet is down during chapter 2. None of the characters can access the internet in the dark world. (It’s not clear if the internet was down before hand, or if opening a dark world blocks the internet connection.)
A crucial part I think you missed full analysis of was "You've been Making, haven't you?" This intransitive 'making' here, using it as a verb by itself without an object, is fascinating. It's also exactly what Queen said in her fountain monologue. "[The Knight] Coursed Its Will Into The Blade And Made". Nothing after that, the Knight just Made. I can't see these two unique uses of made as anything but connected. The Knight makes [Hyperlink Blocked]. On that note, [Call]/[A Call]/[Calls]/[The Calls] is an interesting idea. There's some jank around the edges (uploading calls to the disk? I suppose he could be bringing his records of his calls with the phone man), but it meaning both importance to people around you, choice, and specifically the calls he got from the phone man gives it flexibility and an interesting dimension. Kris wants calls, as they want to be important to their friends, and they want to be given more calls (choice) in their life. Spamton wants calls, as he wants the phone man back in his life after being abandoned by him. Making the Calls is certainly what Kris does during Snowgrave, and the Knight calls Queen. Maybe a bit more of an interesting as opposed to good idea. He does use the term Making the Calls unblocked already...
I had the thought that Hyperlink Blocked could be Content, and your idea heavily supports this as a theory. Creating Dark Fountains is literally making content for the game.
I'll condense my thought about this since I'm scared I'll forget them after finishing the video I was wondering why these specific words were chosen as a replacement for this concept, this thing. What if the hyperlink doesn't lead to a website, but leads to a game object? For example, when talking to a NPC they could say "oh, you have a in your inventory, let me reforge it" (the symbols are a spot where anything could be typed in). What if spamton is referencing a thing like that (for example, Level Of ViolEnce) that is missing from deltarune, and because the game doesn't know what to do with a uncompatible object it blocks it from corrupting the rest of the dialogue. Since it's a HYPERlink, it could be referencing a thing from a different program, like Undertale. I know this is a super meta theory, but I wanted to highlight that hyperlink doesn't just mean a link to a website. Maybe someone more experienced in lore than me could make some sense with this information? Also if this is mentioned later in the video I'll be very happy.

At the beggining of this video I was certain that this doesn't have to mean anything important or specific, that it' s just another of his glitches. 47:47 - I believe this line actually makes sense, it's not saying it will upload his choices...it's saying it's HIS choice that he wants to do the upload. Without the excessive periods it would be "...Now Kris, don't be so greedy. Hand over the disk, then we will transfer. My *choice*." Now, as you point out, it does fall apart because choice is not in hyperlink blocked at times
One possible small hole in the love theory is if you consider the person describing the prizes is Spamton in the Spamton sweepstakes, he says love multiple times, specifically in the body pillow description, Spamton engraved wedding ring description, and the Spamton snow globe description (he might say it more I didn't check to) Also something weird I noticed in the sweepstakes is I don't think Spamton says [Hyperlink Blocked] once throughout the whole thing.
I figured it would be Love/LOVE just based off the Weird Route, though i never thought about the implications if this for every other instance Also about control theory, would the Weird Route quote perhaps be referring to the control Kris has over Noelle? i dont think control makes that much sense for the weird route since the whole route is about the player using their control over kris to control others, and spamton doesnt refer to the player aside from possibly that one in the shop... furthermore his despise of his 'strings' and knowing that kris has their own 'strings' would make it a bit... questionable for him to get mad at kris for what you are clearly making them do - of manipulating noelle
I'm currently at the part where you discuss determination. You said that Spamtom intending to supply Kris with determination makes sense if you assume that he meant Kris will have his determination after he absorbs their soul. And thats how they will break their strings. This makes sense on the surface but I think you got the order of events wrong. This basically makes it seem like Spamtons plan was to become Neo and to then take Kris soul with his new power (smth he already tried to do in their first encounter but failed to defeat Kris). But that was never part of Spamtona plan. Spamton thought becoming Neo was enough to set him free. After transforming hes even surprised that he still has strings and how he still isnt "big" enough. Only then does he change plans and tries to take Kris soul to become even more powerful. And in snowgrave he also never mentions taking Kris soul. Hes just mad at Kris for getting "Hyperlink blocked" without him. I know this is only a small correction but still. Edit: Ok, so the mistake was just repeated during the control theory. No, Spamton never planed to fuse with Kris. The plan always was to become Neo. Fusing with Kris was a spontaneous decision. So Spamton offering that to Kris as a reward beforehand doesnt make sense. Edit 2: It was just repated again during happiness. At this point I will stop editing this and just say that claiming Spamton wanted to fuse with Kris from the beginning is a minor misunderstanding that leads to the actually kinda major effect of presenting multiple theories as more plausible than they actually are. I hope Jaru reads this.
The Romantic undertones of the Weird Route were something I hadn't picked up on. That's very, very interesting! When you think about it, it does fit extremely well. Now, granted, our relationship with Noelle in the Weird Route is a very toxic, abusive, and controlling "love", but I'd say it still qualifies.
Also in the sweepstakes it says that the ring Spamton gives you is a wedding/engagement ring . And that all you have to do is slap it on any Hoochie mama and she’ll be yours forever
I was one of the multiple concept theory people (thinking that Spamton may be putposefully censoring himself to hide his intentions from us, the player, while conspiring with Kris for freedom, which I still think is interesting), but your analysis has totally convinced me. Nice theory crafting!
Come to think of it, does the word Love show up anywhere throughout the Spamton Sweepstakes? Even if some parts of the event are explicitly non-canon or were written by someone other than Toby Fox, chances are he still has a final say in everything that got published that day, and he might have ensured that the term never got used to maintain consistency.
to me it just has to be "independence". it can be soaked in, it can be felt in the morning, transferring spamton's consciousness into the keygen means his independence is going in there too, and, during the snowgrave route, you *are* making independence. the game doesn't allow you to kill anyone, and yet you find a way to make yourself independent of the world's very rules by freezing the enemies. you're making your own independence by creating your own options. and saying "I'll get so [independent]" makes sense too !
My objection to this is that "independence" means something very similar to "freedom", to the point where nobody would blame you for using them as synonyms. Yet Spamton can say "freedom" just fine. Why would one be blocked and the other allowed?
[independent] ≠ [independence] two different words as 'hyperlink blocked' directly contradicts the original basis of the argument that hyperlink blocked stands for one specific word, so taking your final line into account your theory just does not work. also, 'making independence' doesn't make sense with its own definition. As someone else already stated, in this context 'independence' is interchangeable with 'freedom', yet "making freedom" makes no sense either. You can 'gain' freedom/independence, you don't create or make it. bonus point: you're not 'making new options'. snowgrave is an alternate route that exists, not some new possibility created by the player. You're still confined to the boundaries of the game.

Freedom would be the ability to make your own choices within the game's rules, and independence would be making your own choices regardless of the game's rules (I'm gonna get very meta here). Kris isn't just not free because we came to possess them, they're not free because they're the main character of a video game. it's not just their circumstances tying them down, but their very world, meaning that it's not just the player that they need to get rid of, but the rules of the entire medium of video games. Like at the end of the spamton battle, cutting the strings isn't going to solve the problem. another thing is that gaster is, like the player, completely unbound by the game, which, to me, explains what made spamton (and maybe jevil) go insane : gaster telling him about the world he's in, and dangling the prize of being able to work around the rules of said world.

I replied to the other commenter about why I'd differentiate between "freedom" and "independence", but, regarding snowgrave, I do think you have a point in saying we're technically not going completely against the games rules and that we're still only able to do it because the option is there. However, I feel that Noelle's presence (i.e. the character who is known to uncover secrets and glitches within games) explains that. noelle is being used as a tool for the player to use an exploit within the game, and I think that *is* creating independence from the game's rules, even if we are limiting ourselves to using the options we are given, as, despite those options being there from the beginning, we are using them in ways we're not meant to. I also feel it complements Undertale's meta-narrative pretty nicely : UT's genocide route was an exploration of the ethics of grinding within rpg games, and, according to this theory I have, snowgrave would be an exploration of the usage of glitches and exploits to get ahead in the game.
I’ve always been a firm believer in the “[Hyperlink Blocked] = Determination” theory, but I’m excited to see what Jaru thinks about it. Also, I’m at the part where he reads the dialogue, and every time he says “hyperlink blocked”, I just say “determination” out loud and it always fits (or, “I’ll get so [Determined]”) Edit: after finishing the vid, I have this to say: Your LOVE theory, as interesting as it is, still doesn't have the sheer "Occam's Razor"-ness of the Determination theory (I don't know how to explain, but it just "fits" too well for me). Your analysis of the Snowgrave route in this video was also very very interesting for the shipping Kris x Noelle shippers, but I'm not that invested in shipping so I don't have much to say on that. I was thinking either Love or Determination this entire video. Fell asleep half way through and then woke up for the determination theory. Was dead set that you’d be agreeing with that one, but then you mentioned love. Some of those points ( the romanticized implications of the weird route in particular ) are ones I’ve seen but never saw others mention. Jaru is the only Deltarune theorist I am subscribed to because I find these videos to be fun and informative, despite me disagreeing with many conclusions. Not even 15 minutes in and I’m already having a better day.
I think "Content" is an overlooked contender, not only because "Like and subscribe for more Content" but also because it's secondary meaning (to be content, aka "happy, pleased") fits "I'll got so, I'll get so, I'll get so Hyperlink blocked" better then love does, which I don't think you addressed in the video, when you said love fits every hyperlink blocked well.
And I don't think that "Content" would be a fourth wall pull that's out of left field for Toby Fox either, in fact it's because of Undertale, being scraped down to the bone, by players and code diggers ever in search of more precious "Content" that might trigger a reaction like this. Kris utilizing Noelle in the snow grave route is effectively making "more content" to explore, we did a horrible thing, manipulating an innocent girl, just to see more game, and how it would react to the push.
If Spamton views LOVE, as a sort of freedom, then saying Kris and the others have gifted him his freedom, actually makes perfect sense. They're giving him friendship, which works as a form of love. And he calls them friends.
Having a crush on noelle the snowgrave route romantic implications is something I like even with how disturbing and abusive it actually is. It will be very interesting to see how this and the rest of deltarune developments.

I have always had the theory of [Hyperlink Blocked] standing for "Darkness". As Darkness gives form to the Dark World, and by extension to all the Darkners, it would makes sense for Spamton to want more of it, or to have it all for himself, possibly using it to free himself from his strings. By transfering into the Disk, he basically gives his "essence" as a Darkner to Kris in order to be reborn in his Neo body. As to why Kris would want Darkness, I see two possibilities : - It could be a link with the end of the chapter, where Kris literally creates Darkness by opening up a Dark Fountain, (albeit, after sealing one, but it can't be known if Kris wants to have more Darkness, or just enough Darkness under control to have a new world to explore). It could also tie in with Spamton only wanting "a little Darkness", meaning he wants at least enough for his world to exist). - It could allude to Kris wanting to use Darkness to break the link betwen them and the player, which would mean that Darkness as a force isn't so much about quantity, but about quality. Upon realizing that the Darkness of Chapter 1 or 2 aren't strong enough to break the link (or enough "pure", being the term used to describe Ralsei's fountain), Kris would seal it, and then try elsewhere to find a more potent source of Darkness. As to why Spamton accuses Kris of making "Darkness" during the Snowgrave Route, either acts of violence allow Darkness to grow stronger, meaning Spamton Neo intended to commit atrocities to further his power, or Spamton obtains knowledge of Kris' motivation to create other Dark Fountains after sealing the one of Cyber World, and blames him for wanting to keep all the Darkness to himself despite their deal (and despite Spamton intending to do the same thing). Also, Spamton never uses the word "Darkness" to my knowledge, only referring to the word "Dark" three times, and only while in his Neo Form, in which he might be strong enough to circumvent a part of what's preventing him from saying it.

Wow, I'm actually almost fully convinced - that's saying something, cause I'm a sceptic and a half, especially when it comes to a game with as limited information as Deltarune's current status as a demo. Very good analysis, the flow chart was a nice touch. Yeah, I think love/lv checks out; I will say that I think literal theory is still worth considering, both for all the points brought up and because Toby has shown himself to be able use the "exact words" trope very effectively in Undertale. So that's basically my #2, if it were to not be love/lv I would put my stake in that.

I was strongly in the "control" camp due to its narrative significance- for my own part I think Gaster's experiment is trying to see if a Determined soul can create control in conditions where it shouldn't be possible- but I think you've got me convinced with this. It fits with ch2 bringing back other elements from Undertale, not only Determination but also the title music in a very upfront way in "Before the Story". On top of that, the Weird route is pretty blatantly geared to make you feel filthy with its mixed motifs of romance and manipulation, and it definitely shouldn't be overlooked that the accusatory "Making (Love)" furthers that as well as the LV connection at the same time.

@46:02-.- I feel like it's worth mentioning that while EXP is short for "EXecution Points" in Undertale, It's traditionally sort "EXPerience", which could theoretically work as a synonym for once entire being, depending upon one's metaphysical persuasion.
It's a single concept theory guys! Acutally, it's (word referring to two concepts) ! That aside, I think LOVE theory works pretty well, but I prefer a multiconcept with LOVE, Will (as in force of will, identity), and some other related words. My main hangup is that youd think for Spamton to transfer their LOVE, they would need to have some already, which... well either Spamton killed someone, or they're being randomly poetic/affectionate in a way they otherwise never do. You could argue Spamton is emotional due to Kris' success, but idk unless calling someone a [funky] little [worm] is high praise, I still read "THEN WE WILL TRANSFER MY [[Hyperlink Blocked]]" as referring to something central to Spamton's very existence. Even if Spamton does have LV (or I guess if 0 LV exists enough to call it theirs), it still feels odd that they'd call it out in this line to me. Are we to infer that saying you'll transfer your LV is tantamount to saying you'll transfer your entire being? It's just one or two numbers, depending on if EXP is part of it or not, surely there's more then like eight bytes being written to that disk. I digress. "I'LL GET SO. LOVE" also reads strangely to me. "I'LL GET SO. MUCH LOVE"? "I'LL GET SO. HIGH LV"? But then it's not just one word anymore! My current reading, then, is that Spamton uses [[Hyperlink Blocked]] to talk about multiple properties if SOULs that are (for some reason?) forbidden to discuss. LOVE can be done, Determination ("I'LL GET SO. DETERMINED"? another, maybe Will/Identity/Being for the transfer line. This is technically multiple concept but they're all related properties so to me it still works. LOVE and Determination are both symptoms of having a lot of Willpower, and are closely tied to the SOUL, so using these words interchangably or having the same oppressive force censor all of them makes like a little sense. Maybe [[Hyperlink Blocked]] occurs when Spamton wants to say something in this category, but phrases it in a way that whatever/whoever is censoring them notices and forbids.
You know what's funny? Without any previous exposure to this concept or any theories about the meaning of hyperlink blocked, I was getting ready to come down to the comment section about 20 or so minutes into your video and propose LV/Love as the suggested meaning. I figured I would wait until you offered your theory first, so it was a pleasant surprise that I shared your train of thought. The multiple meanings of violence, levels, affection, and sexual innuendo all fit the way he uses hyperlink blocked, and it has enough prior narrative weight to make a lot of sense.

I always love how thorough your videos are. Determination and more importantly LOVE or LV. For sure seems like the most likely candidates. I like LV more as well as his hyperlink blocked jokes seem slightly naughty. Like how love can be naughty in a way. But of course the naughty is more malicious then anything relationship related. I was literally thinking "wouldn't Love be the perfect fit for everything here?" at the beginning of the video! So happy to hear that's the theory that is agreed on
the romantic undertones of the snowgrave route are in my eyes important and people may seem to misunderstand it, just because there are romantic tones doesnt mean it's a good thing, like, at all. in this context, we the player are putting kris and noelle in an abusive relationship, we are hurting her, forcing her to do things she doesnt want, and moreover we are forcing kris to hurt one of their closest friends for, what, curiosity? snowgrave isnt about how creepy or evil kris is, its about how cruel we as the player are in ruining the relationship of these characters for our own games sake. its very clear that noelle is organically attracted to susie but we the player in this route have the option to rip that away and force noelle to be with kris if thats what *we* want, because this is what snowgrave is about. its about what *we* want from these characters, not what they want for themselves.
Relationship can refer to many kinds of relationship including platonic, ie friendships. But our actions in snowgrave could be interpreted as pushing that boundary towards some very messed up "romance" and that's pretty compelling
As a writer, I appreciate how you include the narrative angle in your theories and consider what fits for the story. Although I don't know how to feel about me being sold on the Hyperlink blocked= Love theory based on Spamton's character and backstory. Not my weakness for characterization!
Personally, I’ve always subscribed to the “LOVE/LV” theory, with the weird route’s uncomfortable romantic undertones, the power granted by LV, along with everything else. It all made so much sense to me. I was fully prepared coming into this video for you to crush the idea of love theory working, and with it, all my hopes and dreams of being right. Hearing you acually agree with the theory felt so gratifying (and justifying? Vindicating? Idk… it felt satisfying) to me. I can’t overstate the intense feelings of “OMG IM ACTUALLY NOT A COMPLETE IDIOT” this video gave me. You da best Jaru, love your videos! PS. Spamton Neo’s Wierd route monologue goes so insanely hard, especially when [hyperlink blocked] is love.
This is such a solid theory analysis video! Our amateur theoretical physicist brain did a bit of a 180 upon hearing the term "string theory", haha. I think the most solid of the multiple concepts theories is the mental block one. It gives the aire of Spamton desperately wanting to acquire/go back to something he simply can't remember- he knows it exists, he knows it's something deeply important to him, but he just *can't remember.* It's something that resonates pretty deeply and is realistic to severe trauma, especially when you consider it might line up with whatever happened to Spamton to turn him into a puppet. My favorite has to be the single concept theories of Determination and Love/LV, they both fit so well! I think it fits better than any multiple concept theory, and the duality of Love/LV is fantastic!
