The almighty HTC Vive Deluxe Audio Strap is in my hands and I´m about to do a full review with unboxing, a first look and full installation of this newly released HTC Vive accessory! Let´s begin with the unboxing, and then a full installation setup procedure of the Vive Deluxe Audio Strap. I´m also doing some stress test of the strap for the first time in a bunch of VR games and giving you my own little review and personal opinion.

Hey Tiff :) Yeah, this strap is really fixing some of the biggest issues with the old straps. The front-weight problem is gone, the sudden re-alignment when looking down/up is not an issue anymore with the audio strap either. I dont care much about the audio headphones (even thou I liked the sound of it, it was surprisingly good) but I still prefer using my wireless VOID headset, so I will gently remove the headphones from the headset tomorrow :) Yup, havent seen any negative review yet. Great product, maybe a little pricey, but a lot of the cost is probably put into the audio. Cheers

Another fantastic video. I want one of these so bad, but I can't afford to fork over the cash for it at the moment. I'm still waiting to get my VIVE back from repair. Their site has shown it in repair for the past 2 weeks now, UGH. Oh well, hopefully soon. Keep on keeping on. You rock sir.

Thanks mate :) Yeah, its not cheap unfortunately, but to be honest I would have bought it any day if I havent got it for free. The comfort is just priceless, and also great sound in the headphones. But I fully understand you, VR is not cheap... and new accessories all the time... Vive Trackers, straps and soon wireless TP Cast also ;) OH damn, still not repaired? I feel so sorry for you, I really hope you will get it very soon so you can enjoy VR again! Thanks again, you too ;) And have a lovely weekend! Cheers

I can't say how many times I get frustrated with the hmd sliding down over my eyes when I put it up on my forehead to use the desktop monitor. Especially if a bit sweaty. Being able to keep it off your face without removing the whole thing to me at least makes it worth the purchase. The balance, comfort and easier 'earbuds' are just a bonus.

Yep, EXACTLY my problem as well! And it was even worse with the 6mm VR covers (from vrcovers.com), it just slides down all the time. With the new strap it sits perfectly on my forehead :) Yep, I will remove the headphones as I want to continue use my VOIDs with the microphone.... Cheers man!

Awesome video, @SweViver. I was able to follow along, step-by-step, as you did this, pausing the video as needed; your explanations were clear, and concise, and by the way, I saw in another comment that you said your English was poor, and I have to tell you that your English is pretty flawless, so don't sell yourself short there. Also, I felt supremely stupid after getting everything connected; I forgot to connect the 3 1/2" plug on the left side, to the audio port inside the headset, so in the end, I was left with this plug hanging there, wondering where the hell does that go, lol. You didn't mention it in the video, and you probably assumed one would know, which is true, but again, I missed it and felt really stupid. In fact, I posted another comment here, asking about that plug, and where it goes, but then thought it through some more, removed the connection cover, and almost immediately spotted the rather small hole where that 3 1/2" plug goes, so I deleted that other comment because, as I said, I felt supremely stupid. Anyway, I've run on long enough with this comment. I mainly wanted to thank you for making this video, thus making the whole installation procedure less painful.

I've not had many issues with the old setup and I use a headset. That being said I like having the option of this deluxe audio strap. I'm keeping my eye on that wireless upgrade, that's going to be a game changer. I find myself getting my immersion broken by having to pause & untangle the cables.

Me neither, not many problems besides the fact that it often got re-aligned and moved up a little when I was looking down (playing golf for example). That problem is gone now :) Oh yeah, the wireless TP Cast...oh gosh I sooo looking forward to play VR without those cables ;) Cheers mate

Hey, I like watching your vive (and the "not vive friendly") videos, and I agree, any games where you have to look down, the vive, even strapped down hard, will slide away from your face (more away than up), so the lens focus becomes blurry. The screw-adjust strap at the back may be amazing, but the spring-absorber at the front doesn't make it look like it's any more secure attachment. While you can say the headset feels lighter because the weight is more evenly distributed, it really isn't. As you pointed out, you've added weight, (a tiny fraction more, there's not that much metal in the headphones), but a bit. What you end up with isn't a pair of wraparound sunglasses, you're still slinging several pounds of technology around as you want to try to see everything happening around you. Good workout for the neck, still cumbersome, like wearing a golden crown. I can see why they say the crown weighs heavy on the mantle of a king, because it's a lot more comfortable hanging over the fireplace. I pun. My worry is the headphones being oriented on where I'm looking, not where my desk with lots of breakable things are. Even setting up room dimensions to say "Thou Shall! Not! Pass!" isn't enough to keep me from cringing when I'm making an overhead lunge-stab at some Orc and the borders start going up telling you "something expensive is about to start crying". That's the main reason I didn't use the earbuds or the extender cable for headphones. With my external powered speakers, I always know which way to my computer desk. The other reason not to use the earbuds is hygeine (not only uncomfortable, but as hygenic as sharing butt-brushes. I think that's a thing. Recently I saw a meme of a user review of a toilet brush indicated it's like brushing teeth, but the wrong end, and was uncomfortable.)

Yep, exactly! Looking down was a pain before, especially in golf games. The spring-absorber is very nice because it lets you take off your HMD and put it on your forehead fast without touching the screw-adjust at the back, but as you say Im not sure for how long it will hold, well lets hope its a solid construction :) Evenly distributed, that was exactly the word I was looking for hehe, sorry my poor english :) Actually I never bothered about the front-weight of the Vive with the old strap as I dont think its THAT heavy, but I could easily feel the weight distribution difference by using the new strap, it just felt lighter now, and I think most ppl will appreciate that feeling, especially kids, women or ppl with weak necks. Yup, its kind of dangerous playing in VR with headphones as you totally loose your orientation, and when we step over to wireless VR that problem gets even bigger. Many times I can orientate myself by feeling the cord and which way its heading, but without a cord we are totally "lost" in VR ;) Haha lovely comment mate, thanks for the input! Cheers

Finally got one of these. Haven't tested it yet but as a developer Ive driven myself nuts with anything audio related. Popping the earbuds in and out or dealing with a cord from a normal set of headphones is a hassle when you are taking the old strap on and off constantly. Strap itself has never been an issue though.

Great overview SweViver. I'll be grabbing this strap as soon as it's available in the UK. You answered the question I had about looking down and the HMD lifting which happens to me too, it can be quite awkward as then I have to hold the Vive with my hand to keep it in place otherwise the image becomes blurry. It's the only problem I've had with the regular strap.

Your English is fine don't put yourself down. As your style of videos is unprepared, even the games reviews are like unboxings it's always going to be difficult unscripted. I think on the whole you do a really good job on all the videos, you're like an excited little boy opening presents at Christmas.

Thanks man, yeah it always more difficult to do videos "on the fly" but I somehow like the way I do it, as it gives the audience my real first impression, even if the videos dont get the same quality compared to a "prepared" video :) Haha I know, Im very excited about everything VR has to offer. Once again a great video, thank's. Your worry about the connection of the new audio strap to the HMD is very real. More youtubers have had issues with the audio strap, check out the video of Bumble on his channel, "My failed Deluxe Audio Strap review - I broke my HTC Vive" He literally broke htc vive after installing the deluxe audio strap, no-joke. I did not post the link as you might not appreciate it on your channel, but just search for Bumle on youtube. I really hope these are coincidences, but to be honest, it does worry me as breaking your HMD is the last thing you would expect after upgrading and spending more $$$ on your Vive.

Hey Peter, thank you so much :) Yeah I saw that video Bumble made and I have been followed up by Cas and Chary yesterday. The problem is a tiny screw that can get lose and fall off if you not tighten it at least once. That black screw is mounted from the inside of the Vive headset close to the lenses, where the strap is connected. If that screw falls off, then the whole connection between the strap and the headset falls apart. Thats what happened to both Bumble and Cas & Chary. While Cas&Chary found the screw again and mounted it back to fix the issue, Bumble could not find the screw anymore so he could not re-attach the strap to the headset. In fact his headset was not broken, but only the screw is gone, which makes it impossible to connect any strap. Thats why he said his Vive is broken. Lets hope this is not going to happen to many more people, that would be devastating :( I have not had problems with the connection or those screws - not yet at least :) Btw, of course you can post links to his channel, we VR RU-vidrs are all friends and cooperating so that's no problem for me :) Thanks for the feedback and information mate! Unfortunately one of my vives died yesterday. After allot of trouble shooting HTC vive helpdesk advised me to return the HMD to one of their service stations so they can repair it. Some stange error 208. Whatever I tried nothing worked. I am planning on opening a VR arcade so I was fortunate to own 2 vive's which made the trouble shooting allot easier. Really disappointing as I only used the headset for about 3 months. Let's hope HTC can fix it, but as I am living in Curacao Southern Caribbean the shipping back to the us and everything will be allot of hassle and ofcourse $$$.

if u search for Bumble vr.... he had a problem with the strap.... but it was because he tighten it a lot..... I think people forget that it's not some construction site helmet strap u still have to be gentle a bit.... and u have to pick it up by the top strap

only 2nd day of vive play for me but I ordered the deluxe strap having to manage 2 headsets (audio and vive) is annoying (if you have wired heaphones) and the base strap is not very good unless you crush your head to stabilize the headset, already had the same problem as mingojingo below the vive moves away from your head and things get blurry, the weight is also...tiring with the base strap

I was using my Vive microphone in all my videos from fall 2016 (when I started off the channel). It works well for multiplayer and communicating, but for capturing videos for RU-vid the built-in microphone is just too poor quality :(

The better move, in my opinion, is just to wait and get this strap bundled in inevitable Vive "Deluxe/Pro/Whatever" Edition that will most certainly appear in a few months along with wireless, or whenever HTC realizes that to compete with the Oculus Rift, they can't just offer the near same experience for several hundred dollars more, and then making Vive owners pay extra for a comfortable strap and built in audio on top of it, while the Rift comes with it standard.

In 5 years all VR headsets will probably be 10 times better, but for now, its not a good idea to start a Rift vs Vive war, because it only hurts the future of VR :) Im glad you enjoy your Rift mate. Some prefer Vive, others prefer Rift, nothing wrong with that. Keep supporting VR and one day we will all play crazy VR games in multiplayer together :) Cheers

It's not hate, it's frustration. I own the Vive not Rift (and I'm happy with that). But that's also the frustration. I'm no way eager to spend an extra $100+ on top of what I felt was a pretty high price point on the Vive to start with. I mean, if I got the head strap for free, sure. But $100+ more, no thanks. I know what HTC's been saying, but I'm certain that a re-package of the Vive with that strap and wireless, is coming as a bundle, and we could see it as early as this Christmas, honestly.

The wireless TP Cast...oh man, I could do ANYTHING just to get that one :) Unfortunately we will have to wait until fall I think... Feels like the EU/US release is getting postponed all the time..

Really cannot see the point of this, I really like my original earbuds, and have never had problems with the head straps, Just a waste of money to me. TP cast though is something that I want if it works well?

Well for personally, the biggest change with the new strap is the comfort. Its sits so much better on my head without moving around. I dont care much about the audio and I will probably remove the headphones (its possible) and continue using my Corsair VOID headset. Oh yeah, we are all waiting on that lovely TP Cast :) Cheers

I hope a better company comes out with a headset. After this, I'm fucking done with HTC. They're a shit company with garbage customer service. Valve did all the work for the technology so hopefully, a better company does gen2 better. Fucking foam on the Deluxe audio strap is peeling off on me after a little sweat. I hate HTC so much.

Nah, of course more different straps is always nice, but I still think the Deluxe Audio Strap is a really great upgrade from the original Vive strap. The peeling off was not a big issue (if you have watched Tribalinstincts latest video). The only thing we need to do is wash the foam with water once to remove the thin layer that peels off. I have done so already, and I can truly say the foam is NOT peeling off anymore and its really comfortable. I have to point out that the audio from the headphones on this strap is really awesome, and if I only had a good lavalier microphone I would never remove the headphones. But for now, I have to remove them to be able to use the Corsair VOID headset, and thats why I made this video if people needs to do the same :) Cheers mate!
