Denim Quilt As You Go: Creating A Raw Edge Strip Quilt Block!

You guys know I love pairing old denim jean leftovers with scraps of quilting fabric. Here is another idea for doing just that.
This time I am using skinny quilting fabric strips to make a raw edge strip quilt block on a denim base. I'm using those strips between 3/4" - 1.5" that are difficult to use in other quilt blocks or even in binding.
I am making my blocks quilt as you go as I find that is the easiest way to work with stretch denim which is what all the old worn out jeans in our house are made of.
I am using the false back quilt-as-you-go method but you can easily adapt this to other methods too.
Check out my other videos below on various quilt-as-you-go-methods as well as my previous denim and scraps quilts for inspiration.

What do you think - do I stick to my original plan and use up all my different colored thin strips - or just do white?
@coreygilles847

I like the white because I love the contrast in the block. However, color is nice too. ❤

I'm really liking how this is turning out. At first I wasn't sure until I saw how you were quilting all the strips. This is going to be awesome! Question-Are you using a 90/14 needle or a denim needle? Wondering because of all the thicknesses of the denim and batting? Thanks for sharing! I can't wait to see how it turns out!
@ScrapFabricLove
@ScrapFabricLove 2 месяца назад
Honestly using whatever needle was already in my machine. Could be 90/14 or maybe even 80/12. I only really worry about what needle I’m using when my machine is not sewing as I want it to, then I change my needle and might choose for what I’m doing otherwise I don’t think about it much - sorry! I know that isn’t super helpful!

If you choose to stick with the whites, it would be cool if you did the binding in a bright color.

@darcicole5530 that would be a nice contrast 👌

I did the one you did with the odd angle. Jean quilt and loved it I used up all my orange fabric. I think this one will be just as fun to do. I think different colored blocks would be fun to see. Great idea!

I like the idea of 4 color blocks the same put together then ,at the end you would have a rainbow of colors to put together I also have denim jeans to cut up sooo I need to get busy,But starting a garden in Georgia, and its about time to plant outside after weeks of seedlings inside under lights. I'm usually a more-color-the-better gal, but I like the monochromatic look of what you have. Maybe use colorful threads for quilting and/or colorful binding. Can't wait to see the finished project! I love watching your videos!

Please do avideo showing how to complete this quilt. I think you should use other colours, making four in each colour so the X is one colour, if you know what I mean! 😂 Thanks for sharing. ❤👍from Somerset

I like the low-volume fabrics idea. 🎉. If you don’t have enough white fabric strips, perhaps also use creams and pastels-with one shade per 4-patch block. The low-volume effect would be awesome!

Make two. ONe with low contrast "whites", and the other with lots of colors, or strips of "one" color. I like the denim for majority of the cloth for a friend who has a big dog that LOVES quilts on the bed. I feel good about putting in the work of a quilt if I know it will survive his darlin doggie. ))

I think this is a wonderful freeing quilt idea!! I have some thin stretchy jeans and then some 501s that are so thick and not a manmade fiber in sight--How would you deal with that variation? I would go with whatever color fabric strip you have and would be lovely to see the before and after pile of strips so we can appreciate how much "trash"you were able to use. And, if you decide to enter it into a sustainable quilt category, the pictures might be a good addition? What do you think?
@ScrapFabricLove
@ScrapFabricLove 2 месяца назад
Well I definitely have a before picture of the pile so I’ll try to remember to take the after! Honest I mix my stretchy jegging denim and my husband’s in quilts like this, but I’m not as particular as some.

Hi Kristen thanks for the video. It's a very interesting idea. But I have a question. I have never done raw edge applique. I usually use steam-a-seam and zigzag the edges down during quilting. How are the edges going to hold up over time? Will It fray so much that the seams come apart? I know some quilting cotton fabric frays more than others. I enjoy your videos and always learn something new.
@ScrapFabricLove
@ScrapFabricLove 2 месяца назад
The edges will fray and get that slight rag quilt look. The only stitches at risk of coming away would be the ones at the very edge and it would probably also depend on use levels and how often it goes in the wash machine. The other quilt I mentioned where I had to restitch some of the petals down went through the spin cycle 3 times in a row as I kept forgetting to take it out of the wash machine and needing to re-rinse it😂. So I’m sure that took its toll! But that one wasn’t stitched down as densely as these strips.

No I haven’t used flannel strips before but that would be a lovely texture to pair with the denim.

It surprised me, but I like the white. If this is QAYG, when do you add the backing?
@ScrapFabricLove
@ScrapFabricLove 2 месяца назад
Once I join all the blocks I add the backing on and just quilt the backing down either side of the ditch. It makes it manageable for me.
@patriciam4861

I thought that you do not need to use batting with denim quilts because it would make the quilt too heavy.
@ScrapFabricLove
@ScrapFabricLove 2 месяца назад
It’s personal preference! I like a heavy quilt so I always use batting but of course you can leave it out if you prefer.

I think using selvages sounds great! I want to see that quilt. But it wouldn't bother me at all if the selvages were mixed in with the strips!
