+++ Life After The Honeycombs +++
Denis D'Ell was born 'Dennis James Dalziel', in Stepney, East London, on the 14th October 1943. (Source: His daughter via email) He trained as a signalman for British Railways, where workmates who heard him sing encouraged him to enter a talent contest which he won. According to an item in the NME he was also a plumber before joining the Honeycombs.

I was a kid during the high points for the Honeycombs...I was ten or eleven in the biggest hit year and although unsurprisingly my male hormones led me to follow the fortunes of Honey (Ann) rather than anyone else, a couple of years later though I did make an effort to seek out Dennis...sadly without success back in those days... I loved them nonetheless... How come his superb voice (in all it's various phases) didn't make it somehow, somewhen? As kid I couldn't understand...But looking back, as an adult (of somehow anyway), why isn't he in a hall of fme somewhere or another...

Group was Dannys Passion, the only track we have by the group is available on RU-vid, rest of their recordings remain in the Tea Chests. Thanks for the link

+Lorenzo Denny himself famously disliked a lot of Meek's production work on his vocals, saying it "made him sound like Mickey Mouse!". Dig around for some less uptempo numbers like Eyes, This Too Shall Pass Away and the effect is less pronounced. The post-Meek singles like "A Woman Called Sorrow" [this channel] , It Breaks My Heart etc are great vocals too, imho.

Producer Meek almost always sped up the recorded vocals on Dennis' lead vocal (which Dennis didn't really like and would have liked them released in the speed he recorded them). But speeding up vocals was common back then as a slightly higher voice sounded younger (pre voice changing) and appealed more to girl teenybopper fans. This was probably left natural and not speeded up.
