I mean, society heavily impacts how far you get in life. Also, Denzel was directly referring to movie making, not any other aspect of society.

tie gideon I believe parents are the foundation for their children’s success. In America you have a great opportunity to succeed no matter the circumstances. Your upbringing help jump start your life, it’s up to you to continue rise through the challenges.
4 года назад
If you think about it, most of the inequality is about class not colour. There are privileged people of all groups and there are also poor. It seems like there are people that profit by carrying on the racial division so we never get to the actual solutions.
@hxhdfjifzirstc894
@hxhdfjifzirstc894 4 года назад
@@tiegideon9816 I'd like to disagree with you, without offending you. When you say that someone who is born poor is 'less likely' to be successful, I disagree with the premise. First of all, your success is NOT A MATTER OF PROBABILITY. You choose. I can't choose for you. Choices lead to success or failure. And attitude. When you don't succeed on the first try, do you quit? Or do you CHOOSE to make your own success happen, regardless of the circumstances? Have you ever hit overtime at two jobs in the same week? I have. I CHOSE TO. Have you ever worked 80 hours a week, for 4 years straight? With only Christmas and Thanksgiving Day off? I have. I CHOSE TO. You need to start by defining what success is to you, personally. Then work backwards and make a plan on how to get there. Step by step. And when your plan starts to fail, you need to find another way. And when that fails, you come up with another way. And when you don't have enough money to do it, get a second job. You choose to make yourself successful. True success doesn't come from being born into some rich family that gives you a fake career, with no effort. You need to throw that lie out the window RIGHT NOW. Secondly, there's nothing so special about making movies that invalidates DW's point about culture versus color in a broader application. The lady asked him why the director needed to have dark skin. His point is that the skin tone itself had no effect, but that the culture was important to the outcome. I think this applies to many other areas. If you surround yourself with a culture that brainwashes you into thinking that you cannot achieve success because you were born poor, you won't achieve success. Your skin color won't have any effect on the outcome. Reform your own personal culture, and CHOOSE to make success happen. Write down your plan on paper, because it's so easy to get distracted.

@@hchchc948 However systemic black issues can very well be blamed on black culture, Shapiro is not entirely wrong and part of the problem is the fact that we don't recognize that and completely dismiss it as racist ranting.. Now as for Denzel, he did not mean that black films are better because of black culture, he simply meant that a black director in charge would be able to incorporate things in the film that are relevant and black folks would relate to it, which is why he give the examples of the films like good fellas and schindler's list, and the hot comb example..someone not familiar with those cultures would not be able to incorporate and convey things the same way, or understand the references.

How about you examine the context of that statistic, why husbands are not in the home and the governmental push to get them out. If you can understand that historical context, you'd think twice about your simplistic insertion of percentages, and how ridiculously gullible you and the rest of Middle America is for failing to look further than one blind study that was probably skewed to corroborate a specific theory.

@@dpcisunbreakable I understand very well how 'progressive' policies have disincentivized the black family. My point - which seems to have flown right past you - is that if people are going to keep buying into it generation after generation with the results we've seen, it must be an IQ issue. 'If you can understand that historical context . . . ' And what is that historical context? Drawn me some sort of correlation between what you think that historical context is, and how it directly effects the decisions that people make right now. Describe to me the agency or lack thereof of the people who might or might not be affected by that historical context. Meanwhile, a further contention I'll make is that the white left PURPOSELY disincentivized the black family. Chew on that.
@dpcisunbreakable
@dpcisunbreakable 3 года назад
@@zeenuf00 First and foremost, let me remind you that we are both adults here, this is just a dialogue, and I assume you have home training. If you can't do without the bitchy retorts and teenage sarcasm, you should consider talking to yourself instead of folks on RU-vid. Now to address your deliberately miseducated thought about generational struggle. You are not a trained psychologist that performs assessments on patients with a focus on their Intellectual Quotient, so stay out of the lane of those with PhDs in that field. They can determine that testing outcome for themselves. Consider working within the talents you do have without jumping to conclusions you're not qualified to reach. Take a pause from this discussion for a moment and go back to your own childhood for a minute. I want you to consider all of what you saw, what you had, and where the dysfunction, if any, occurred. It is safe to say that you grew up in a household with two married parents. That was the foundation of your development, and you had no interruptions to your functioning that was detrimental. As you developed into a reasonably mature adult, you probably modeled your existence based off of the example established by your parents. An IQ score or issue is not relevant here when clearly one's offspring model their behaviors, values, beliefs, and choices after what they see you do. If you have been successful in your relationship dynamics, the children you do have most likely will model their family dynamics after the example you showed them. I'm hoping after reading this comment, you start becoming a better example of humility. None of that required your reductive and catty IQ reply. Now factor in the limited educational and employment opportunities. Schools and employers were were legally allowed to segregate their programs and resources so that only whites were afforded opportunities for growth, and limited blacks to blue color positions for men, and maid positions for white families for black women. It is at this crucial point in history that mothers were encouraged to utilize governmental benefits to enhance the functioning of their families far beyond the limited income they were paid. So food stamps and monthly payouts were the cost the government paid to rid black families of their male parent. This also the period just before the 1970s, where many history exploded with triumphs and tragedies. The one specific tragedy that your federal government covertly inserted were drugs. Now you can always insert the presumed adage that a person can say no to drugs, but when your entire community in infiltrated with crack cocaine, heroin, liquor stores on every corner where churches are built opposite of the same block. The same family structure is now struggling to keep its male protected as the temptations of drugs, greed, addiction, etc. have now contributed to a growing issue of crime. The family structure begins further declines because the parent is often swapping roles with their offspring at inappropriate stages because of the parent's relationship with drugs that were sponsored into the United States by our very own Federal Government. And with crime increasing, incarcerations increase, marriages fall apart (if the parents are lucky enough to marry), and the incarcerated family members now have never-ending cycles of relapse, recidivism, and no opportunities to rebuild their lives, because their criminal record has tainted them forever. That means formerly incarcerated fathers can't support their children, can't find jobs, and are subject to further decline as their limitations increase. And when people that are unqualified to speak on the Black Experience by inflating negatively skewed percentages without substance, you feed into racist ideas by making improper generalizations. If you were truly about that life and wanted to gain understanding, I wouldn't have needed to expend this much time educating you on a history you clearly choose not to learn. Now take your reductive comments regarding chewing and IQ and apply them to the many inadequacies your arrogance works to downplay each day by being a total douchebag with a sensitive ego and an unwillingness to move away from archaic and rigid thinking.

Or to really back what he is saying get someone who's black that never been brought with the hot comb or the like and have them direct it, they would not understand that way of living. Therefore their perspective wouldn't add to the person Denzel is referring to. Or simpler terms black person growing up middle class suburbia vs black person growing up in urban environment.

Denzel Washington is much more than an actor. I have watched videos of him delivering graduation, and other speeches, that had great insight and we're inspirational to people of any color. I have great respect for him.

What a wonderful way to explain. Denzel is such a nice normal down to earth man of true character. He shows that you can be in Hollywood industry and remain true to who you are.
