Derail Valley: Simulator is the best train game experience. Period.

It’s incredible what Altfuture has done with DV. Glad the game turned out great after the update.

One thing I noticed with the steam engine… put a good amount of tonnage behind it. She will throw cinders out the stack if you work her really hard, and if you are just coasting or something. The cinders go away. They’re proportional to how work the engine is working and how much throttle you have. THAT is my favorite thing about the update, among the other massive changes and improvements.

I think the reason why the diesel browned at 23:00 was because it was also caught off guard and shit itself

Derail Valley is the closest I have gotten to my ideal train game. TrainZ with some scenarios lightly scratched that itch, but its multiplayer, asset problems, desyncs, crashes and lack of content were really holding it back. Derail Valley alone gives the industry fun and purpose to railroading, with the rolling stock, light finance and hands on fun, the Multiplayer mod puts it ahead of TrainZ due to better content, even with its short comings. If the devs land a proper coop MP, they are in a field where they have ZERO competitors and are an unique product!

Hyce, if you genuinely want to turn derail valley into a horror game, go somewhere into the mountains (ex. Sawmill, coal mine), set thunder to max, cloud speed to max, wind, rain, fog and cloud cover to max, and set the time to midnight. I tried it and after 5 minutes i legit felt like i wasnt alone in my room. Might just be me because im easily spooked but it is a very hefty vibe. Btw, to do this, make a save with weather editor available, press left alt and click the cloud in the top right corner. Weather editor is default in sandbox. Also, i believe the diesel mechanical is based on a soviet prototype. I recognise that locomotive from a TPF2 mod...

i couldnt agree more with you hyce, ever since i got into derail valley ive been saying "this is the perfect medium" but thats true more now than ever. its just the perfect mix of arcadey fun the adverage person can enjoy, and hardcore sim that gets stuff right that the big boys never have. a gateway sim if you will, fun and interesting enough to bring people who never wouldve considered train games into it but realistic enough to entice train fans and make this new to the train world intreged enough to wanna learn more. people say gaming plays an important part in preservation cause it lets trains that never got the chance to be saved, be reborn. but derail is that type of game that makes you feel like you wanna go experience the real thing and help preserve these old beauties

My favorite part about DV is that its better at being a simulator than most of the simulators...without trying to be a simulator

The diesel-mechanical seems inspired by the Drewry diesel locos provided to British Railways in the early 50s (Class 04 and later Class 03) which I've always wanted to try operating. Mainly because the real locos usually have controls on both sides for one-man operation, though I like the detail in game that the lever slots for the other side are there, but all the levers are missing, which seems like they were cannibalized for parts or something

On thing about the steam engine, you stated that the water in the glass goes up from the water expanding with the heat. Liquid water doesn't really change volume with temperature very much. The reason why gauge fills is because of the difference of pressure on the water from the boiler and the pressure at the top of the gauge. It takes some time for the steam in the boiler to travel through the long copper pipe to the top of the gauge. During which it is cooling and losing pressure and pulling the water level up until an equalibrum is met. Once the heat from the boiler travels up the copper line it has a more accurate reading on the gauge. Can't wait to give the s282 a try for myself in game!

Seems like Derail Valley is turning out to be the Kerbal Space Program of train sims. Silly premise, surprising detail, steep learning curve but addicting enough gameplay to potentially inspire a whole generation of new professionals?

This game in VR is just amazing. Derailing a train really gives you dread (and puke) when it suddenly goes off a cliff or starts tumbling.

You sort of mentioned it in post, but the gearboxes act like an old school truck gearbox pair, common ones are like a 5+4 combo. Here, according to Squirrel's video, is the order of gears solely by ratio, in the form Gear A/Gear B, where 1 is to back and 3 is to front: 1/1, 1/2, 2/1, 2/2, 1/3, 2/3, 3/2, 3/3 As you can see, running B to 3 while A is still in 1 is a higher gear than using most of A2. You probably also want to shift whichever gearbox to the higher gear before switching the other to a lower gear, as in 2/2 would shift temporarily to 2/3 before ending to the desired 1/3. Also run throttle to idle before shifting, else you get the not-so-fun BRRRR.

This game made my interest in trains go from 0-60 really quick! Never had an interest in trains, but now I'm excited to keep learning about them! Fun game, and I can't wait to see where else it goes from here.

It just misses a miltiplayer, would be so awesome to shunt trains together or just run trains while habing to pay attention where anyone else is^^ ps: the reallife counterpart of the dh4 (v200 if im correct) is one of the most common shunters in germany, im really happy that the brought that in and i hope for more german locos in the future, br 218 would be awesome

In Germany for decades the primary mainline diesel engine was diesel-hydraulic. Why Germany was the only country in the world to go all out on diesel-hydraulic, I don’t know. Class 218 and it sibling’s 215, 216, 217 and 219 are slowly being retired as they where all build in between 1971 and 1979. Now they getting replaced by the class 245 build by Bombardier (now Alstom) which are diesel-electric. But you still see class 218 everywhere on sidings kept ready for there next assignment. Class 218, German engineering, if we decide on a solution, no matter how silly, we drive it to perfection.

Hi, new physics person from Immersive Railroading here, since seeing this update come out I have taken it as a personal challenge of what I need to beat simulation wise... in Minecraft, so don't mind me while I spend the next few years coding a physics sim into Minecraft to hopefully get closer to what real locomotives feel like than even this, I have the background for it, but if there are any other idiosyncrasies of steam locomotives I should know about, please let me know

Aw man that feeling when you get the steam choo choo running for the first time. Steam shooting out the safety, steam billowing from the cylinder cocks and black smoke all above plus new chuffs. They got it RIGHT.

Believe it or not, DVS isn’t the first game to simulate water expansion and sloshing in a digital steam Loco. Disneyland Railroad Sim has these details and an even more authentic cab-running feel! It’s much less game-y though which limits the fun.

ive seen Derail Valley vids in my recommended, never watched em (despite being a train enjoyer myself. my autism has failed me to where im not a nerd about em). glad i watched ya first cause not only do ya know how to operate the trains normally, ya also show off the casual side. and the chaotic side lol. good job!

It's a little thing, but one of my favorite additions has been the lanterns, particularly the red marker lantern as it's a dead ringer for the real Adlake Kero I use. At night, it's almost uncanny to go back to the caboose to the footlocker where I keep them all stored, dig out a white one to put on the desk to see and read the air gauge, and a red one to go hang on the back coupling to mark the rear of the train. Caught myself just watching the light dancing on the walls of the caboose and listening to it rain outside parked in a siding with the loco shut off and dark ahead. Only thing missing was some fuel to chuck in the stove to get a kettle on for some tea. Really looking forward to the steam switch engine that's coming up too!

The quality of life updates in this release are amazing. It feels like a whole new game and you are spot-on. The balance of everything is perfect!

Somehow it feels right seeing the new big, fast Mike “sends it to spaghet” with “Kenosha” playing softly in the background.

I don't know if you'll see this or how many other people have requested this. There is a simulator out there that essentially simulates the entirety of a steam locomotive. The disney land railroad simulator. You can fire the engine cold and sit there for hours waiting for the water to heat, you have to blow out the condensate from the air pumps via the exhaust drains while turning them on. So many features on a steam engine that have never been touched in any other game are in that one. It has a price tag of 50-60 dollars, but I think it is a must try for your channel. It will give your audience a more clear idea on how a steam engine operates in an environment where you aren't sweating or freezing. I really hope you can check it out.

I gotta say, the updated steam locomotive seems amazing, hope I can still haul 1800 ton loads out of the harbor with it

short notice on the hydraulic engine: it closely resembles a german class 211 Diesel - most older german diesel engines are hydraulics. (Class 211 is from the 1960ies)

I love how the 3 chime whistle starts out with the dissonance then blooms into the beautiful resolve, i got goose bumps on the live stream the first time

Seeing the reaction to this made me remember back when I bought from my Model Railroader magazine the game 3D Railroad Master by Abracadata. It cost $50 and with a $2.50 weekly allowance it took forever to afford but it was the first "big" purchase I made with my allowance. Being 8 I really didn't do much besides see how fast I can go around the preloaded tracks or how long of a train I could make but its something that I get the same feeling from seeing this update to Derail Valley.

Is this a holdup? It's a science experiment!

The DM 3 is really powerful for the 30 grand it costs to unlock. Just slap it in 2-2 and it will move, I tested it with 800 ton train on flat ground in the harbour and it pulled it without issue. Also another neat thing is when braking hard the wheels on the 282 and DM 3 will lock up and the engines will skid.

I love the improvements to the 282. I'm so happy to not have the tender banging into the back of the engine the whole drive. Plus I blew it up my first time out which is a nice positive.

The diesel hydraulic engines got quite popular in Germany in a long time. Honestly the only real reason seems to be that the hydraulic turbine industry had some good lobby; the efficiency is horrendous, diesel electric is a lot more efficient and less failure prone.

Driving the steam locomotive with an oversized cargo weight in VR is one of the best gaming experiences I've ever had. And I haven't even played the new 'Simulator' update yet. I'm almost upright with excitement to play it! 😵

The Diesel-Hydraulic is a bit uncanny to me because its a bit of a mixture between a german V90 and V100. Its body looks more like a V100 but the shape is more like a V90. Little knowledge dump: Before the universal numbering system that just assigns every class a number from 01 to Infinity, germany had this system where different drivetrain types had a certain letter. For example E for electric or V for Verbrennungsmotor (combustion engine). Nowadays the big electric locos are 100 to 199 and the diesels 200 to 299. For the diesels the number behind the V indicated HP of the base model devided by 10. The V100 for example had two 500 HP engines totaling 1000. This system actually went down to a ridiculously small level all the way down to V5 pee wees.

By the way, they’re coming out with an 0-6-0 tank switcher locomotive in a couple of weeks. You can actually find it sitting next to Bob’s garage near the machine factory. You can’t drive it, but it’s still cool to look at
