Derby Buses 1991, A nostalgic view into public transport in Derby before pedestrianisation.

I originally uploaded this video back in 2008 when RU-vid was low resolution (240p) so decided to re-render the video at higher resolution.
This original video had been viewed over 22,300 times since I uploaded it.
Note there is no sound on this video.
This ten minute video of Buses around Derby City Centre was filmed in 1991.
I would like to thank Vanessa Robshaw for passing on the footage to share with the world. We all take these things for granted at the time but here we are privileged to be able to see a Nostalgic window on Derby.
Its odd, when you say 1991 it does not sound that long ago does it?, seems like just a few years ago as I can clearly remember it well, but then you work it out its actually 22 years ago!
My God that's amazing and somewhat worrying, I guess it depends how old you are as to how long ago 1991 feels to you.
What a Nostalgic trip this is, Before such things as Westfield and the Quad.
The footage here allows us to see a rare glimpse into the public transport that we all took for granted when we used it back then. As you probably know most of the bus services in Derby today are run and Arriva and Trent Barton.
In this video you can see a wide variety of bus operators.
The video is mainly about the Buses, I'm sure there are Bus Spotters out there that will be able to reel-off the details about the many buses featured and if there are then feel free to post the details in the comments for those who are interested in such things.
My own personal interest in this video is the locations and how much they have changed.
The most significant change is the pedestrianisation of most of the roads where these buses can be seen navigating. It looks really chaotic and dangerous seeing bus after bus going down St Peters street (See video at 01:01 to see what I mean). You don't know you're born with today's pedestrian only areas!
Do you remember the "Blue and white" Derby taxis?, well you will see several of them in this video!
oh and look out for the dreadful haircuts, fashions and cars of the day.
Points of interest...
00:21 Corn Market from bottom of St Peters Street. The number 34 Bus to Blagreaves Lane waiting outside H. Samuels
00:49 Albert Street from bottom of St Peters Street.
01:01 St Peters Street looking towards East Street.
01:12 Corn Market near St James Street
01:33 Victoria Street
01:43 Corn Market
02:06 Albert Street
02:11 St Peters Street near M&S
02:22 Albert Street
02:39 Corn Market
03:19 St Peters Street
05:46 A Blue and White Taxi reversing
05:53 Look at that old red car! Isn't that a Maestro?
09:16 St James Street Corn Market end
Please rate and comment on this video if it stirs any memories. I'm sure it will do for some of you.
Even better still is if you spot YOURSELF in the video, you never know someone out there may recognise themselves!
For instance are you the lady at 08:46 seeing yourself 22 years in the past?

I grew up in Derby too, I was born in the old city hospital (now the Royal Derby Hospital). I lived in the Nottinghamshire area for 13 years, moved back here in 2020, which turned out to be the worst decision of my entire adult life. Derby is such a sad, miserable place full of rough sleepers and aggressive beggars.

Even in the early nineties Derby still had some charm and character to it. What happened!? Its such a dismal place now.

Brings back so many memories. I forgot all about the blue and white taxis. But after watching this footage, its not difficult to see why St.Peters Street and The Corn Market eventually got pedestrianised. It was very chaotic, not helped by the fact the buses traveled so fast.

A lot of comments about Derby losing its character with these kind of changes of things like Intu shopping centre. And I kind of agree, not sure why. But I do like the new Intu shopping centre, it competes with cities a lot bigger. The old Eagle centre, even when I was younger looked dated in parts, but would love to see old photos again. One thing I really miss was the old Eagle centre market. The layout was brilliant as a toddler, can remember wandering from my Mum and Nan once, and got totally lost but they must've heard my cries. But I loved the bright pastel colours, and also, this is weird, but think it may of been part of the air conditioning system, but there was these bright plastic discs at each end of the air con grills and I'd stare at them for ages wondering what they were or did. And the other one, I used to love the old CCTV cameras in boots. They looked liked someone chopped off a daleks head, turned it upside down and mounted two flashing red lights on them!

My memories of Derby go back to the 1940s when green trolley and motorbuses were run by Derby Corporation. The trolleybuses were smooth and silent and could zoom up hills like St Peters Street. I remember one occasion in the 1950s when we were travelling on London Road towards Alvaston, the trolleybus was full with plenty standing and the conductor gave 3 rings on the bell which meant do not stop to pick up more passengers. He also pulled a strap across the platform to stop anyone falling off! The traffic must have been light that day because we nearly took off crossing the Wilmorton canal bridge and reached the old laundry in Alvaston with its beautiful garden in record time and I bet the buses of today take longer.

Camms collapsibles. Our school used them for their bus service. Proper sheds on wheels. Water would fire through the floor when driven over big puddles.... Kids even launched top deck seats through the sliding windows.

Comment by Aydosh1991 in 2008: I don't know what it? is like these days, but in 1991 there seemed to be a huge number of buses. When I grew up in Derby 1960/70's I recall always having to wait for buses.

Thanks for uploading this, really enjoyed watching, not sure why exactly, I mean what's so exciting about buses? I always remember when I lived in Derby till the age of four then sadly moved to Swindon. But even before being old enough to see other towns and cities to compare, as a nipper, I always loved the blue colour scheme of the buses and taxis. And although it wasn't an extremely bold colour scheme, as I have got older and been able to visit other towns cities, can only think of Brighton that has a bold colour scheme. But also reminds me of When my sister moved back to Derby from Swindon for Uni, she lived in Normanton, and we used to play "Spot the bluebird" not sure if Datsun's counted though lol

I only used the Camms busses when I had no other choice. They were always dirty and mecanically dodgy (Rather like using alot of the unlicenced taxis in London) They got taken over by another Nottingham company and bit the dust a year oe two later.

Might I add how traffice seems to flow so much freely than it does now a days. whom ever thought of keeping the Osmaston Road/ The Spot/ London Road bottle neck must be mad and then to top off with the Westfield caparks enterances/exits. City planners need to rethink and get the roads back to some normality. Burton is another one which has suffered with pedestrianisation
@MikeyManchester
@MikeyManchester 11 лет назад
There was alot of competition around the late 80s & early 90s when Camms of Nottingham & Midland Red began to compete with the council owned company. Camms mainly ran a fleet of worn out buses, such as older versions of the Fleetline & some coaches. Some of these were found to be unroadworthy when checked, as were some of the DCT examples. Camms cheap fares often temped passengers to "Catcha Camms". hoping that paying passengers would return again the following week.

wow 1991!!!! Its amazing but when you hear the year 1991 you dont think of it being over 20 years ago. I rmemember it well before it all being made pedestrianized. As much as i hate change and the loss of character to the city centre making it all pedestrian is for the best. I remeber as a kind walking up St Peters St walking on the pavement and having a bus literally millimetres away from taking my head off Happpy Days

How times have changed cars, buses even shops. Littlewoods now Primark, M&S is now Tesco Metro whilst the top floor was the now obselete JJB Sports. Albert Street is no longer one way but two way traffice whilst Cornmarket, Market Place, Sadlergate & St Peters Street are now traffic free zones. I think Derby was the one of a few cities that were still using former City Transport vehicles some amassing the age of 26 years old. All changed in the name of progress now. Good or Bad you can decide

This is a real nostalgia trip for me. Having driven busses in Sheffield for a small private company,we had an old fleet of Nationals,MCW,Atlanteans ect. Great to be reminded of deregulation in other towns, and how the so called big companies react to having to fight for fares. Thanks for the upload.
