I can't bear to watch the highlights of this even now. Was there on the day. Absolute travesty of justice that this was not replayed. Ernie Clay asset stripped the club the following season and we were lucky to stay up as a result. It too us another 16 years to get back up but I was there on both occasions , the game we won at Huddersfield to get us into the Premiership remains one of the best footballing moments for Me.
I was at another nail-biting game that day, unfortunately I wasn't singing "staying up" I was at Maine Road, the David Pleat running across the pitch, in a beige suit and matching slip-on's game!
Derby had a history of pitch invasions in those days. The last match of the previous season had ended in a pitch invasion as well. The referee Ray Chadwick should have made it clear to the police and the club that any nonsense would not be tolerated and if there was a pitch invasion he would stop the match. I do not understand why the fans were allowed through. It could have been avoided.
@ForSunday get your facts right Fulham have spent 23 years in the top flight and also "we won it one time we won it one time the INTER TOTO we won it one time"
No wonder we had the likes of Heysel etc after this. Graham Kelly and the FA were completely spineless in their reaction and the English game ( like Fulham that day ) suffered. More importantly lives were lost.
@ForSunday Derby hold several records The 07-08 Premier League campaign saw them record of just one win in a season. They also set several Premier league records including Least Home Wins and Least Away Wins and Most Defeats in a Season . Records set included Fewest Points Fewest Goals Scored and Worst Goal Difference The club also holds the record for Most Consecutive League Games Without A Win, with 37 matches and the Record Defeat in an FA Cup Final, 6-0 to Bury SAYS IT ALL
But also have 2 league titles, 1 FA Cup, 1 Texaco Cup, 1 FA Charity Shield and 1 Watney Cup. How much has Fulham won. Furthermore we beat Real Madrid 4-1 and Benfica 3-0 reaching the semi finals of the UEFA Cup in 1973. Fulham only have an Intertoto Cup to boast about.
@gerardmarques Hehe nice! Here we go: "Fulham has never won a major honour", Fulham have spent 18 years in the top flight in total to Derby's 64 years ;)
No wonder the Derby fans attacked Jeff Hopkins at the end, scandalous challenge by him, though the ref is at fault for failing to deal with that, the retaliation in the 2nd half and his refusal to take the players off when the fans first rushed the pitch.
This match was played in May not March. Fulham supporters don't feel too hard done by, your team has made it into the top division and done consistently well to stay there, something Derby has yet to rediscover.
Maybe so, but one team is consistently performing in the Premier League and the other is perennial languishers in the Championship these days. I think you know which is which.
Total travesty and utter nonsense this game was never replayed. Fulham were undermined by their own chairman not investing in players with sucha small squad and then didnt push for the game to be replayed. All became clear when he sold the club to property developers which then tried to run the club into the ground so they could build flats on prime riverside land. Still 13 years being in the Prem and Derby what? where? shows just how fickle football can be
