Deron Williams vs Jerry Sloan: A beef so spicy the legendary Jazz coach quit 

I dont think I've ever seen a player fall off as fast as Deron Williams. The guy went from being arguably the best PG in the league to a total scrub when he left Utah. He had like one good year with the NJ Nets before they relocated to Brooklyn, and then he fell off the map.

Hearing about Sloan’s coaching style and and recent stuff about Chris Paul putting his team on a curfew during the New Orleans series makes me think that they would’ve loved playing together

Respect to Deron Williams for owning up to how he was. Every interview I have seen of him recently you never hear him blame anyone but himself for his time in Utah or how his career played out. That is true growth as a person. I think he'd be a great consultant for young talent to speak to before they enter the league

I remember being in middle school when the news broke out about Sloan retiring. As a die hard Jazz fan as a kid, watching this all crumble away was heartbreaking, especially since D-Will was my favorite player. I'm glad they got at least a moment to talk things over before Jerry passed. Just sad to think about what could have been if they had worked things out

Can't believe he was in the same draft class as CP3. Him and Hayward were never the same once they left Utah.

Both parts shared the blame in this mess. D-Will for being so immature and belligerent towards his coach and Sloan for being so stubborn and set in his ways. It's one thing to maintain a level of authority and sense of tradition, but there also has to be an evolution of the culture and style of play more on par with the times. Look at how successful Gregg Poppovich has been with the Spurs and how he's nurtured an incredible amount of talent AND coaches in the NBA, while adapting his stance throughout the years.

It’s a very sad story in my opinion…but I feel like this fails to capture how good Deron Williams was at his peak. He had an excellent stint. May have ended too soon but it was much longer than others.

Always interesting peripherally to me that Jerry Sloan was from Illinois, Deron Williams played at U of I, and their breaking point came during a Bulls game, the team where Sloan became a star.

Taking MJ to 6 games in a finals is not an thing to knock.

2:23 I remember that 2003-04 Jazz season! No more Malone and Stockton. His best players were a young Andrei Kirilenko, Deshawn Stevenson, and Carlos Arroyo. Preseason predictions had them losing like 60 games that year and he guided them to a 42-40 record just missing the playoffs by one game.

As a Utah resident my whole life, this broke my heart when deron wanted to leave. He was one of the only bright spots on those teams, and led some surprising playoff runs. He was never the same after he left Salt Lake City

I was at the last game that Sloan coached. He was visibly livid at the end of the game, I've never seen anyone that mad about anything in my life. To add insult to injury, his last game was against the Bulls, the team that Jerry played for, and former Jazz star Carlos Boozer was playing for Chicago that year (not to mention the team that Jerry Sloan lost to in the finals twice).

This video is huge historical revisionism. Go listen to David Locke's radio interview with Sloan 5 minutes after Sloan officially announced his retirement. Sloan told a completely different story than this video. Sloan didn't think this fight was a big one, he's had far worse and didn't mind. (Greg Ostertag once threw a bag of ice at Sloan's head when his back was turned. Sloan was happy to still bring Ostertag back his final season.) What happened was Sloan said he felt himself getting old in the month or two prior. He didn't have the energy to fight. He wasn't doing film like he used to or standing up to players like he should. When the DWill dustup happened, Sloan realized his time arrived, he had to quit because of his declining health. He just got old.

I miss this team when I was young. D-Will, Boozer, AK, Mehmet, Young Paul Millsap... I remember, they are pretty good team, but always losing to the Lakers and Spurs.

Deron Williams was soooooooo good. I hate how injuries limited his career.

They act like D-Will just got bad. He had hella injuries by the time he got traded. The offense was antiquated and would repeatedly get shut down by actual contenders and teams that have equal or more talent. As far as their interactions, both sides were immature and petty. At the end, DWill was at least the bigger man at the end. So that’s something. Imo opinion Sloan had been coaching so long, that I think he was looking for a reason to quit.

Great Documentary. Williams was even booed the few games as a Jazz player until the trade was final. The loyal Jazz fans booed their own player. I knew he was going to be traded. But the acknowledgement of Deron to know he was difficult to deal with and his apology is truly amazing in this day and age.

Jerry Sloan was a pain in the side of us Laker Fans..... since Showtime even Still, I always thought it was sad how Deron drove him out of Utah, his home. Or made him want to quit, whichever

I remembered growing up and passionately hating the jazz but I've always respected that team! And I remembered being so pissed off by the way coach Sloan retired and I knew it was because of Darion Williams! You could tell that any person coaching a team over 20 plus years that he was a hell of a person to be around! ALWAYS BLESS JERRY SLOANS SOUL

I'm born and raised in Utah and I was so excited to have Deron Williams ! I mean in just his 2nd year in 2007 he totally balled out in the playoffs and led them to the WCF ! They lost to the spurs who went on to win the title that year but Williams played great that series the future looked so bright ! Then over the next 3 seasons him and CP3 were the top 2 PGs in the league and a lot times I thought Deron was better than Paul cause he was bigger and stronger , then all of sudden Sloan retires and Williams get traded ! Just like that it was over then he fell off a cliff with the Nets , sad story 😞

Unpopular Opinion: Jerry Sloan is a great coach who didn’t adapt well to the 21st Century Attitude (And that expressive attitude ain’t just in the NBA, but in the NFL with WR’s, and MLB in some areas) Gotta be able to let your players show their flash, hardnosed style leadership won’t command respect in the modern age anywhere really.

Salute to D-Will! He realized he made some mistakes and sounds like he faced up to them and apologized to his coach. In my opinion, the worst move was leaving/ requesting a trade from the Jazz but again he had a good career, made a lot of money, and made a name for himself. Good for him.

Such a shame how badly Deron Williams fell off in such a short time. I remember when people thought he was better than CP3 and I absolutely HATED when he played against my Lakers in the playoffs... His pull up game back then was incredible.

I think even with the talk, this will haunt Deron for the rest of his life. He honestly could've been a great PG, arguably one of the best ever, but his attitude and arrogance destroyed it all for him. For Deron, it'll always be a case of "what could've been" had this not happened, and it's something that will haunt him.

Jerry Sloan also has his jersey retired in Chicago. Long before Mike and Scottie.

Excellent video on the topic of Sloan VS D-Will! So as lifelong Lakers fan who was born and raised in Utah I got to see this situation unfols. The Jazz had high hopes on the new duo of Boozer-Williams to be the new Stockton-Malone and the former being a duo of immense talent yet lacked the drive and professionalism of the later duo.

In the beginning, every time DWill and CP3 went head-to-head, DWill looked like the better PG. After the Sloan incident, DWill turned into a nothing while Chris Paul become arguably the best PG in the league. Makes me wonder what could have happened had the Jazz gone with Chris Paul instead.

Deronn Williams was out of shape and Carlos boozer couldn’t play inside very well. End of story for that team.

I feel like the narrative arc of this video was to mostly side with Sloan, but from what I heard I'm closer to 50/50. Deron Williams wasn't Dennis Rodman or some primadonna. He wanted a little bit of slack running the offense as a young player and Sloan was inflexible to the nth degree. That isn't someone who is a cancer or uncoachable. Williams, at no point, came across as someone averse to accountability. Sloan just sounded like an old, agitated person that hated the world after losing Stockton and Malone and just wanted to be done with it all...using Williams, who was only like a 3/10 on the headache scale, as an excuse to walk away. I mean, using a horrible human being like Karl Malone as Sloan's character witness is also not helping. I think a normal coach could have showed some flexibility with Williams, but Sloan was too old and run down for the job. I mean, if you run down the Williams' offenses in this video....he what - 1)was mad about sitting on the bench as a 3 pick behind lesser players, but not mad mad. He didn't have an episode.(2) Made some critical remarks about practice schedules. (3) Held a casual player's only meeting to talk out some issues which infuriated Sloan. (4) He ran a play to the wrong side of the court that worked and was slightly standoffish about it in the locker room. It doesn't seem that huge to me.

RIP Jerry Sloan. You were kind of a boomer but more importantly one hell of a basketball player and coach.

This story is a lesson that when an older established person is telling you how things are done you have to listen for better or worse. Once you know the ins and outs then you can switch things up.

At one point I actually believed Deron Williams was a top 2 or 3 point guard in the NBA when he was with the Jazz…what happened after he went to the Nets? Was he just a product of the system or did too many injuries get to him?

Sloan is one of only 4 Chicago Bulls players to have their jersey number retired. The other 3 guys are Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen, and Sloan’s 1970’s teammate Bob Love.

I grew up in SLC, and on any given night those Jazz teams could beat the best teams of the era. I got to see an amazing duel between Willians and Paul to top it off too. It’s a shame what happened.

Both parties are at fault here, but I want to look at the way Sloan acted. Williams admitted he acted like an ass and was being antagonistic(poking the bear)... but he's the rookie PG, he's going to want to assert his authority and push boundaries--especially in such a rigid system. I don't get how Sloan didn't have the perspective to see that("he's a 21 year old kid, we're all like that at 21.") Secondly, yeah, John Stockton followed exactly what Sloan said, but not everyone is wired like Stockton--Sloan knows everyone is different--I just don't think he was used to it. If you supervise a person who does everything exactly the way you ask, and then they leave, it's going to be an adjustment. The person in charge needs to adapt to understand that new "employee." Now, if Sloan didn't think he had support within the organization after 20+ years, that's a reflection of management. In regards to 20+ years coaching, I think Sloan was tired and burnt out, and Williams was the final nudge for him to say, "I'm outta here."

This is a good video. As a Jazz fan, this is talked about a lot amongst fans. All Jazz fans sided with Jerry Sloan and still do. But I think we don’t quite dislike D-Will as much. For me, I like the guy now. He seems to have matured a lot.

You got a lot of talent Clara, give us more. But don't rush into give us quantity but quality, like this one.

sloan was obviously a great coach but this beef seems to be all his fault. why barely play your 3rd pick? why get mad when your floor general point guard flips the offense? that’s the whole point of a guy like deron.

That U of I team Williams was on with Dee Brown and Luther Head was a blast to watch.

D-Will’s short stint at the top of the league is due to Sloan. He was a baby from day one and rather than work for something he wanted to complain like he was entitled to start. We saw how quickly his career fell off a cliff once Sloan was gone.

I enjoyed watching Sloan’s hard drinking look on the sideline with utah. I was never a fan of that worthless franchise, but I admired how he got the best out of that pathetic roster year in and year out. I wish cp3 played for Sloan. Willians was a flash in the pan player. He was solid, but he had no heart.
