No actors, he's just an excellent suggester. One of the best in his arts. No magic, no psychic powers, just great theater without actors. Go and look it up

It's partly suggestion, and partly peer pressure. The kid's a master of mind control.

he keeps asking him to feel "can you feel that" when he is not touching the guy, and it creates in the guy's mind between his fist and the guy's body.

I look at it as the "power of suggestion." I remember a story one time of a doctor falsely telling a patient of his that he was going to be sick. Instead of shrugging it off, the patient believed it so much that he ended up being sick the remainder of that same day.

I totally agree with what your saying. It's true. The mind in your subconscious acts or reacts by itself w/o you really aware.

He's like a Kiai master. This technique is taught by a lot of people. It's actually called 'intimidation.' You induce the fear of an attack, and the preconceived idea that the attack will hit you and you'll have no defense against it, and when it looks like you're to be hit you're paralyzed in fear and you overreact by over-tensing the muscles you think are to be hit. From behind, the person reacted to the sound. Notice how he gets 'hit' and falls the wrong way. He's imagining the frontal hit.

I can't speak for the "non-physical one-inch-punch" that Derren performs, but the putting-out-a-candle move is 100% for real. I've personally seen it performed by very serious martial arts masters, who are not, on the whole, at home with trickery.

This was also a stunt pulled by Aleister Crowley in a slightly modified form where he could cause individuals to collapse. "William Seabrook wanted a demonstration of Crowley's powers, so the latter chose a man by random out on the street and followed him, imitating his walk. Suddenly Crowley fell, but was rapidly on his feet again. At the same time the other man fell on the sidewalk. Crowley and his companion helped the man up, and he looked confused, trying to find the banana peel."

That's the whole point - he's brilliant at cold reading and other mind tricks including suggestibility and subliminal cues. I'm pretty sure everyone there is fairly suggestible (not an insult, it's a hypnosis term) and that he knows the right cues to send to get them to think they feel a certain way.
@hbono1
@hbono1 13 лет назад
the cue is auditory. Derren's inhale before the first punch is easily heard the second time too.

derren brown is a really good stage hypnotist. this is not a magic trick or anything he simply hypnotized the guy to feel that a certain way. As far as punching behind the guy, maybe its just timing. people need to understand that u CAN influence ur own energy and channel it. people dont believe this cuz they wanna see being used to hurt someone.

Magicians never let an audience in on their secrets they only let them feel like they are in on it to allow them to be suggestable enough to believe what their doing is really extraordinary. Him revealing that he uses NLP and cold reading has people believe it's all very achievable through similar methods and that he is actually more gifted than he really is.

About half of the punch's power comes from physical strength, but the rest comes from the grandmaster's "chi." Basically, Dennis was surprised and intimidated by the grandmaster's yell, so he was already flinching back when the punch hit him and knocked him over the rest of the way.

This is real, people who believe in chi have a easy time believing that someone can control it from a distance, the suggestion that he would be hit made him react though he where hit. The setting helps as well. Going behind him was reasonable as well, the loud colors and the not-silent fabric of his clothing made it so that when he "hit" the man from behind there where audible and visual cues.

I have been studying Goju Ryu Karate for ten years now, as well as taking classes in aikido, wing chun kung fu, kick boxing, and brazilian jiu jitsu. So I am well aware of and able to use this punch well enough. Like the poster before me said the candle is really done with just the punch. As for Derren, the volunteer is well aware of what being hit with such a punch feels like and is subconsciously told by Derren and his incredible psychology to act like he has been hit. Thats all.

its really all in your mind, the mind makes it real. notice how the first time he asked him can you feel that? he is just planting the suggestion into his mind, but on the second punch he uses the power of suggestion and instead of asking he commands him by saying YOU CAN FEEL THAT!

I used to have an awful summer job, but the shift manager could "hyponotize" some of my coworkers. However, it would only work if they wanted it to work. They would trick themselves into thinking they had no control over what they did. And the one inch punch isn't actually one inch. You start one inch away, but when you punch you extend yourself past the one inch.

I'm a martial artist so I know what a punch feels like. When really tired(therefore more suggestible) I have imagined myself getting punched and have felt it. It's a thing with the mind that is really incredible. About the length of the "one inch punch". It's just a name that came up to represent that the strike takes up minimal space. Not that it is actually one inch. Like in Kill Bill: "What if your enemy is three inches in front of you, what do you do then?".

It may or may not be acting but I do know that once you've felt something before and you see the thing that caused that feeling (like a punch about to come at you), your immediate response is to react as if you felt that feeling. Just like when you feel something cold on your skin. You expect water to drip down from off of it but there's no water. Same thing.

@thecolonel981 17 лет назад
Also I will point out, that there is another clip of a martial arts instructor who knows how to do this, works far better on his students who know the physiological reaction of how it feels to really be hit. If your body doesn't know how to react you probably won't react at all, this man does honestly feel pain because he expects to feel pain and knows how it would feel.

its the same way if ur ticklish. When someone tickles you, you automatically cringe up and you begin to laugh. Now after that, whenever someone comes close to you or in a way that you feel they're going to tickle you, you automatically cringe up and start laughing before they even get near you or touch you. Same affect.

I bet that this wouldn't work if he hadn't just seen the actual one-inch punch be performed. It set him up to expect to get knocked back by a mysteriously powerful punch, regardless of whether or not it hit him.

look at the reaction time of the first punch when he could see him and the difference between that and the second punch when he could not see him, quite a big difference so he was probably counting seconds in his head, which would explain why derren did that funny thing with his hand before he punched the second time, to waste time so they would have the right timing.

Derren Brown states, often, that what he does is trickery and suggestion. Of course it still looks strange and amazing, and we have fun wondering just how he pulls it off. But he'd be the first to deny he has any sort of special power (which is surely what a genuine witch would say :P ). Tricks Of The Mind, by him, is a fascinating look at how magic and our minds work.

My neighbour (he's a yogi) can do a one inch punch, and man I tell you, that punch left me breathless, literarily... As for the qi stuff, I know that qi exsists, both my aunt, who works with crystalls, and my neighbour put strong emphasize on the exsistance of qi and since I have felt my own aura I have no reason to believe that it doesn't exist... As for this Derren guy, I don't really believe in him OR his qi trick. If I, on the other hand, experienced it, I might change my mind.

"its a question of how suggestable and how much belief someone has." Exactly. There are certainly some suggestible people in kung fu. Curiously, the Sifu often is able to teach excellent fighting technique while believing in "chi" power at a distance. And often the best students are also the most suggestible, so that they believe they can be and are influenced by the chi power. I've never felt it when I was supposed to, so the Sifu has never tried chi power on me, just regular physical power.

What do you mean fake? Derren Brown would admit he isn't really punching this guy. Its a trick but it works. He says "Its all in your mind'. Some magicians plant helpers in the audience to choose as volunteers, and its possible Brown has done this here. But I've seen him do a similar trick live with someone I know, and it worked. He didn't punch, but pushed him over without touching him. I think he has actually caused this guy to think he's been punched in the guts twice. Clever.

I'd never heard of it before I read comments on RU-vid. Everyone has a bizarre obsession with debating whether or not he uses it. It's just a combination of electricity and magnetism. Think about it. How do EKG's and EEG's work? They're picking up electrical signals *generated by the heart and brain*. The heart generates a current that travels through your saline bloodstream. Your brain generates a current that flows through the epineural sheath. The currents produce weak magnetic fields. Weak, but the right strength and frequency for a human to respond to.
