Mr Brown manipulated the guy to pick nr ONE. You can notice him putting ONE in his head by saying it over and over. If you wach his shows you'll notice this is what he does most of the times ;)

First DB video I ever watched. A man holding a gun to his head, a loaded gun at that. Ballzy... opened the door of couriosity video after video, hadnt seen such an act since copperfield in his younger days when I was just a child, playing a simple guess your card trick using only the tv...somehow quessing my card nearly everytime. It would be nice to have more talent here in the states like Brown closer to home though being so far out from the largest city, the largest names we`ve had performing this far down is TLC and Larry the Cable Guy. Though I have met celebrities before in some of the most unlikely and certainly µost unbelievable places!
Notice that he says "one" a lot when he's telling him to pick a chamber. This is a form of hypnotism to force him to pick chamber one. Derren is amazing at this stuff.

Incredible! Derren Brown is truly a badass! Look how heavy he's breathing! He almost thought it was number 5 for a second and he started stressing when he found out he was wrong. I would too. Geez, what an adrenaline rush!
The entire point of this video is for Derren to demonstrate the power of suggestion, and that he believes in it so much, he's willing to put his life on the line.
People, listen to what he says again. Count how many times he says the number 1, one, as the guy loads the gun. Its what Derren Brown does. He puts thoughts in your head.
I love this stunt! I remember when I saw this a few years ago and it is such a thrill..! Brown selected the subject to pull the trigger out of hundreds of people. Great episode! Although I couldn't see it live since I live in Sweden, it was still very impressive.
He picks up on even the faintest traces of doubt in people's voices, and that is how he knew. He is a mind magician and has, as far as I am concerned, a vast knowledge of the way the human mind works. There's no trick, as such.
Before when telling him to choose a number, he says "choose one" a couple of times. It's an embedded command. He also used it when he was saying "don't try to help me, don't give me any clues". But I could see why he was nervous about number 5. The guy's voice quivered a little when he said '5'.
The reason he managed to know where the bullet was was because he listened to the guy's tone while counting. Notice that when he says 5 his tone goes up and when it wasn't in five, Derren takes a break to think it over and picks up that his tone was already up when he counted 1 which seemed harder to pick up.
I agree. He does repeat the number one a lot. Also if you listen to the guy while he repeats the numbers you can tell he had chosen one because he paused before he said it and gave a stressful sigh.
trick: first bullet is chosen by partner, it's the only true one in the set second is chosen by the spectator, it's a fake bullet witch doesn't even make noise, it's just a piece of metal. the gun has an hidden device wich fires a little charge,so it makes noise and smoke like a real shot(in the end u can't see if there actually is or not a new hole in the bag) derren has just to guess wich was the number chosen by spectator, but he's sure that the magic wil look great from the outside anyway
If you listen carefully to the things Derren says from 3:15 till he starts the game, it's obvious that Derren is trying to make the person choose chamber number one. He's invading his unconciousness with sentences like "I want you to choose ONE of those numbers", "Look at them now and CHOOSE ONE" and "Are you thinking of ONE now?" He's probably been doing this from the moment they met eachother. ;)
Derren plants the suggestion of One over and over again. Then, when he asks the guy to count from 1 to 6, the guy gives verbal cues on 1 (the slowest), 2, and 5 (different voice pitches). Derren starts at 3, putting one of the danger numbers at the end of the cylinder. He takes no chances with 5 (verbal cue) and expects it on 1 (his suggestion.) And if it was 2, the trick wouldn't have ended as impressively, but he still put the gun to his head and pulled the trigger three times, which is ballsy
Listen to the guy really closely at 6:59. You can hear a tension in his breath after saying "one" and then the numbers after are more relaxed. (By the way, blank rounds can be lethal at point blank range)
doesnt the bullet weigh so you feel it while rotating? No idea though... The only strange thing I realized is that he made the other guy sit behind the wall, while a bullet was shot before while he sat at the table... so... is the wall part of the trick?
he did it by phsicologicly (i know its misspelt) programing him to put it in the first chamber because he kept saying one during the setup "is it in the correct ONE." "put it in that ONE." he pretty much told him to put it in the first one
@TattiPoliisi Except he gave the guy the option to just rotate it by hand, spin the chamber, or just leave it. That trick only works with the spin. Also, the guy moved the chamber around before placing the bullet, so chambers 1 and 2 were not necessarily the chambers at the bottom.
@Picolinos The armour guy is indeed profesionnal. I do some shooting in a club and the man loads and stances exactly how one does in the shootin range. The two handed grip you see in movies is called "waver stance" which is a police stance. The position with streched arm is regular for a sport shot. Streched arm makes for better aim.
Whiteflypier...u were spot on, before he pulled the trigger the 1st time I knew the bullet was in number 1.......this trick is all about the power of suggestion and taking the lad out of his normal state of mind....indeed Derren did repeat the number 1 over and over again...and subconciously the lad could only remember the number 1 after being under such pressure....Brilliant trick, Brilliantly executed (pardon the pun) Well done Derren
When he sets the gun to chamber #3 and then fires the gun, chamber 4 is actually the one that fires. When you pull the trigger of a gun, it rotates one chamber and then the hammer flies forward and fires what is in the next chamber. I know this offers no solution, but it's an interesting fact that probably has something to do with the effect. "Number 3 I feel is safe...but you just fired number 4 buddy."
of course it would be easy for you to pick your number. you're not sitting in front of derren and you dont feel the pressure and fear. when you're in fear and feel pressured, its a lot harder to do what you want.
For those saying the mind trick doesn't work, you are not in a room thinking that you have someone's life in your hand, even though it is fake it is real to that man that loaded the gun.
The gun and bullet are real and the guy putting the bullet in the gun have not been instructed to choose a spesific number. But it's still a trick. The guy putting the bullet in have been carefully selected for the task, it's a person Derren is confident he can easilly read and manipulate. He uses suggestions to get him to pick the number ONE and after that reads his verbal and non verbal signals to make sure he is right. If Derren, at any point was not 100% sure, he would have stopped the show.

Its actually not the power of suggestion. He talked about this on a show and he said that he figured the chamber using his body language in the beginning when he put the bullet in and when he told him to think of the number over and over again in his head and his tone change later when he told to shout numbers loud and clear.
To everyone saying it was just a blank, yes the police said it's a blank, but a blank will still kill if you fire it at close range. Look up the actor Jon-Erik Huxman. He killed himself by shooting against his head with a blank.
@rolliepollie94 It is in the first one. Note that he thought that the fifth chamber had the bullet, but it didn't. So he HAD to do it one more time on the sixth chamber. After that, he shot the sandbag, with the bullet in the first chamber.
You are correct sir. If you watch him instructing the guy to "not help it" or help him because it will confuse him, he says it directly before asking the man to count 1 to 6. Then on the number one, the man has so much guilt and grief when he says 1 compared to the number 3,4,6 Derren was confident to pull the trigger, if you listen to number 5 the guy is VERY less than confident on this number, as is Derren. If you read this and watch, I'm sure you'll agree on that account at least.
cont'd...that is the first time James sees the "1" chamber". Now this is where the fun begins. Darren has James look at the numbers BEFORE he moves the chambers around. He then says "I want you to choose ONE of those numbers...have a look at them now and CHOOSE ONE..doesn't matter which ONE it is...are you thinking of ONE now?" Now he tells James to fix that number (the number 1) in his head, and then tells him to pick up the bullet (one). More suggestion..."is it going in the correct ONE?"
At 0:48, Darren shows him the gun with the 3,4, side showing, "chambered" in 2. No way James will select 2,3, or 4 now. James doesn't see "5" (remember that). DB lays it down, handle facing himself with "3" and "2" facing up. Armorer chambers "4", (using his index finger for "1" and shoots, now James will likely put the bullet as far as possible from "4" ("1"). Armorer has James select "1" bullet and lays the gun now with handle facing James with "1" showing at the top. (cont'd)
