The trick is indeed to fool the other person by making them multi-task; asking about directions and at the same time paying for the item is keeping the other mind to busy to really see what's happening. This, plus the usual trust we have in people makes it work. And, indeed, with a streetwise and more wary person (the hotdog seller), the trick doesn't work. What he does is mixing two different conversations with sentences that make sense in both contexts. The sentence 'Take it, it's fine, it's fine.' makes sense it the context of his friend advising him to just take the metro, but also in the context of handing over the money for the ring. This looks like it's making it difficult to see what's happening.

I've seen him do this once before on another special,... that trick is AMAZING! I guess people are just programmed to play along and go along to get along. It's funny that the street vendor guy is so much harder to fool than the jeweler!
Anyone who has ever worked on a shop knows that it is very possible. I am working on a bar and i have made horrible mistakes from time to time on the changes, also once i give the changes before someone even pay me. That's just distraction and abuse of some automatic moves that any person do when work on a shop
The point is, he doesn't show them the paper till he has really confused them. You notice he deliberates revealing the real paper, until he has confused them with lots of misdirection, then he says "Take it, it's fine" - while still talking about other things.
This really shines a light on how AWARE people are. Also, how "awake" they are. Some people sleepwalk through life. Nearly literally. Every day is just a slog through meaningless repetition. Sometimes, people fall into a trance or a hypnotic state. Especially if you're tired. You've been in this mind-state before.In school, barely able to keep your eyes open.Nodding off.Eyes sooooo heavy.You close your eyes and attempt even the briefest reprieve.You are HIGHLY suggestible in this state.
Doktor Antitheist there is absolutely no other explanation. Unless the jeweler was in on it and the whole thing was a sham. Other than that.. Jewelers in Mahanttan.. are not easy men to trick even with counterfeit money.. not to mention white strips of paper. And the fact he doesn't even count it. That's something supernatural going on and of course if its supernatural it's demonic.

The thing that makes it really hard to believe is that when you count the money its not just x number of bills you have to take the time to think about what sort of bill each is and when dealing with thousands of dollars you would usually be taking extra care.
the hot dog guys saving grace was that his English wasn't too good, and since derren is pacing and leading, the actual spoken words being a big part of it, it was hard to lead that guy.....living in nyc myself, I notice that a lot of these street vendors only understand money, even though their English sucks lol to trick them you would have to use some sort of misdirection where you wouldn't have to talk to them
He was not allowed to count. Was to busy thinking in his head about directions and possibly how strange the encounter may have felt. While he was thinking to himself Darren slipped in the line about it being ok. By the time he could actually count the money Darren was gone. Lady in the bank appears to be working for Darren. Seems she new something was up before the jeweler.
The jeweler looks right at the camera, then his assistant stares at us and raises her brow. You can believe this is fake, or start watching for zombies.

Very clever how he did that! He starts talking about something random and then says something like 'it's fine' when people take the money he offers them.. I think that, because they are already listening to his stories they keep listening whilst looking at the money and that his voice that says 'it's fine' overlaps their thoughts of 'it's fake money' so they take it. Amazing..
it makes sense when you know what to pay attention to...the way he constantly bombards them with words and such... he keeps their focus shifted. and the obvious one, as he hands them the paper, "take it, it's fine, it's fine." especially on the last one, for the big purchase, he said "it's fine" a bunch of times.

I love how the smallest things can influence a person. Get them talking about something then slip in a few certain words and they can be putty in your hands.
He handed over the cash after distracting the jeweller with his story and then saying "take it, it's fine it's fine it's fine" while he was talking about the taking the subway. But that's probably only of of the many techniques he used, amazing gift this guy has.
My entire school class was hypnotized to do the bidding of a hypnotist. They were selected out of a wider audience due to their ease of taking suggestion. In one act they were petting a constantly shitting bird, and trust me, they could not have pulled that of if they were acting.
Notice every time he hands them the 'money', he's saying something along the lines of "It's OK, take it" I don't know if it's a bit of bullshit or not, but it is positive encouragement, which is proven... ~Frosty.
also note how derren mirrors the clerks' body position, such as at the jeweler; derren holds the ring in such a way that he is mirroring the clerk. He also says the same thing the clerk says to build some kind of rapport (ie clerk says "yep", derren immediately says "yep")
I've expirienced the same thing several times. At a pub once I ordered two beers one for my friend and one for me. I hand the first beer to my friend the while the bartender was pouring the second. This led the bartender to believe that I never got the first one, since there were no beer on the counter before me, and he pours me another. But I guess it only works on busy nights.
Right, which needs somebody calm, willing, and relaxed. It's not something that happens on the street or on a stage, it's something that can happen after a prolonged induction period in a room, with the patient ideally laying down and allowing you to hypnotize them.
the subtitles really help, and ppl its all about the power of suggestion, thats all hypnosis really is, hes telling ppl as he gives them the money to "take it, its fine", another person said that it might help the way hes dressed so ppl might be conditioned to expect someone well dressed with a fancy wallet to carry cash, but the hot dog vendor wasnt impressed because he probably has to deal with counting cash all the time, but this is just my guess

Yes, I did notice those things but I am amazed they work to such an extent. The part where the guy actually counts what is supposed to be thousands of dollars and finds no problem at all is stunning. I would like to be a subject of such tricks.
OMG!! You're so right. Thanks to you I "accepted it", and I now see it is totally impossible to fake this with editing, or actors. I've tried it and WOW!! It worked!! So far I bought a $500,000 home with an old sock, and a BMW with some of my ass hair, and all I had to do was say "Take it. It's fine" BTW, that hotdog guy must have been a superior intellect for it to NOT work on him. He should be solving all the worlds problems, but instead he insists on working a hotdog stand. **tear drop**
I think Derren hypnotized him a little, so he literally could have given the jeweler any object and he just would have taken it. It wasn't about money or anything being equivalent to money...just being able to accept whatever Derren gives him.
That's right, but the most important part is when he says "it's ok, take it, it's fine it's fine take it". He is talking about his friend saying this, but this makes the man subconciously believe that it's fine and he should take it.
Yes it's true that he uses guiding words at the moment of the transaction such as "take it, it's fine, it's fine" or "it's good for you to take" etc..... but that is just a small final element of what is actually happening. He sets the whole thing up with misdirection. Notice how each time he mentions location/direction and being lost. He points and tries to get the merchant to point as well. This works well with the accent. He is trying to alter the persons "conscious vision" so to speak.

part of the trick is to talk fast and keep the store keeper listening in on you so he can answer your questions, and he wont be concentrating as much on what you paid with, and just take what you handed to him
you know im pretty sure he gives all this stuff back, or else they wouldnt put it on TV, but if you watch his face you can see that smirk like "i love stealing from these morons" lol

I can assure all of you that this is not fake. Derren is an expert at suggestion, hyposis, and mentalism. the whole gag about the subway is the key. the main phrase is "But he said, just take it, its fine" the people behind the register are so used to counting money that they normally will not even look at what they are counting. next time you are in a store observe the cashiers, many you will find to be just like this. HOWEVER i do not reccomend trying this by yourself
That was very smooth by Darren when he paid for his fillets with paper. As he was pulling out the paper to pay for his fillets he said, "I was intimidated by the subway system, but then someone told me to TAKE IT, TAKE IT IT's FINE"! Darren literally spoke to the mans subconscious by saying "TAKE IT, TAKE IT IT's FINE at the same time he handed the cashier the paper he paid with. The cashier only understood to take whatever Darren was giving him. I'm amazed he pulled this off LOL
it's real he does the same thing live in so many of his episodes even to celebrity guests who have impeccable reputations. distraction misdirection and confidence go a long way..
he was saying "take it, its fine" about the subway, the point is that he was directing the cashier's attention to something else and he didn't notice the blank money
Derren applies a technique called "Neuro Linguistic Programming" which basicly works by distracting your normal conscience, and attempt to make your subconscience (which is unable to filter commands from context) to do things. This is how he gains the ring, by distracting and sending hidden "commands" which his subconciousness takes as a real command. (Sorry for spelling btw)
