"The whole thing" is never all about suggestion with Derren...that's just how he wants it to seem. He often "explains" how his effects are achieved, but his explainations always lead us to believe he has more "power" than he does. In reality, many of his tricks really are just tricks. In Derren's hands simple billet switches or book tests become "sublimital influence" and "photoreading". The man is quite clever and I have great respect for him.

This is true. Derren had a look at the painting before drawing it on the paper, so he drew the bear with similar elements and curves in the handpainting, so after showing the woman his hand drawing of the bear, she could instantly recognize the bear in the handpainting
@flushentitypacket
@flushentitypacket 17 лет назад
That IS a small factor. The best explanation I can come up with seems very, very plausible (if I do say so myself). Darren was watching the kids paint. All he had to do, when he was drawing a teddy bear to show the teacher, was to draw one in a position that made it look similar to the painting. Easy.

How did the children come to paint a teddy bear? Easy! Brown was watching the kids paint. When the they had painted enough that it looked like a bear, he quickly told them to stop. Then he tells Amy to ignore the messy corner - in other words, ignore the bit that doesn't look like a bear. Genius! Then the outline is superimposed, reinforcing the idea that the children had drawn a bear. But other lines could have been drawn, creating different shapes. I really enjoyed this one!

It can also be called "superstitious perception", which has been studied by Professors Philippe G. Schyns and Frédéric Gosselin, respectively from University of Glasgow and University of Montréal. They showed that a supersitious observer (here Derren for example) can extract a suggested image out of a white-noise image, even if the noise correlates very weakly with the suggested image. Derren is very clever!

I had to think of the word BEAR as well. But I'm not surprised. Before I saw the part where he drew the bear, I noticed the way the story was written on the paper. Looking and listening again at the story and the bold printed letters on it, and the combination yellow/red, trees/forest, I had to think of the word BEAR. Then I watched him draw it. I have to say I was thinking of a big bear, not a teddy :P

@RaggedyRebuilds
@RaggedyRebuilds 15 лет назад
The EXPLINATION for the kids painting is the placement of the pans of paint. Since the pans of paint are placed in the corners of the paper, the kids had to reach for the paint thus making a "X" figure on the paper. Plus Darren actually points out where the "teddy bear" is on the paper and that it takes a "leap of faith" to see it. He made the kids draw something that resembled a teddy bear just as he made the teacher think of it. But still, it's pretty cool.

Brown's stuff is pretty great, it's nice how he went into the "how to" of this trick a little. Besides that I think that because all the kids were arranged around the mat in all directions, there's no correct orientation, so you're bound to get a vague bear shape looking at it from some direction, especially if you're already thinking of teddy bears.

The point of her reading it over and over, is that he can stop the hand painting job just when he wants, and just when it looks something like a bear shape. Also, the paint trays are placed in each corner, which naturally makes the kids gather around them in such a way, that they block painting on the sides, between the corners, in that way it becomes shaped something like an X, which is part of the shape of a teddybear. My guess is that he also placed "teddybear messages" for her up front.

p.s. Conspiracy theories are developed through the same mental trickery, its called framing the story. You throw out a bunch of little facts and paint them, much like the dots, into the picture you want to portray, soon others see the same picture. What you see depends on what frame of reference you begin with. Works in politics,, law and religion too. Thats why incredibly brilliant people can come to completely opposite beliefs and conclusions using the same given facts. Facts vs. perception.

the answer is, there is no teddy bear. go back and look at the painting without the line drawn around it. He simply watched the kids put the hand prints until they got randomly to an outcome from which he could slightly draw a teddy bear, then he told them to stop. He then drew what he envisioned and your mind is prompted to see it in the paint. Try it on a stucco wall, you can envision all sorts of shapes. Clouds too. Once he had a workable bear, he drew it. Then we see it as he drew it.

remember other Derren Brown videos, the accenting of words audibly, or via the written word, lets a subconscious suggestion take over and dominate the normal words. not just "unBEARable" was repeated, but "hate-TED". Teddy bear. Simple :)

The bear is determined by how the story is written.. Derren just walks around & watches the kids work until he spots a shape copy pawn off as a bear, then tell them to stop. (a vague shape itself, a blob w/ arms/legs or ears) the color sells it. the 30degree downward camera angle also fills in the white space & makes it more believable. She's suprised by him guessing her image (and curious what ESP or sublimal message she sent to the kids) to criticize the "bearness" of the picture

@GregTom2
@GregTom2 13 лет назад
There was two tricks there. First, he used his text to make her think about a bear. Second, the kids made a bear. I don't think they were influenced at all by the story, or then verry little. The trick was mostly to make the teacher belive that she was seeing a bear when all she realy witnessed was a shapeless form. What do you guys think
@Maartenn100
@Maartenn100 17 лет назад
the kids didn't make a bear, I think. The psychology her is that 'what she is suggested to see, is wat she sees in it'. Derren suggests that the painting of the children is a bear. The image in her head, that's really amazing. I didn't know that subliminal wroten letters will have that effect. Well done Derren! (I hope she isn't an actor).

You need to watch the context I'm saying this in. Obviously the choosing of 'teddy bear' was due to the subliminal messages in the story. However, the explanation I am giving is regarding the students' apparent "psychic" abilities.

I think the story had little to do with her choosing the teddy bear. I believe it was imprinted in her before she was given the story with linguistic influences in their conversations. If anything, the story just exemplified the idea of the teddy bear. Also the children didnt paint a teddy bear. Derren just stopped them when he noticed he could spot a bear shape in the mess of the painting. He then proceeded to draw out a similar shape for the lady so that she could notice it. She was primed.

Can't agree with those who say he was watching the kids and drew something similar ro it, because it always HAD to be a teddy bear, because of the words "teddy bear" being spelt out in the story. The kids' drawing could have been seen as lots of things, and when he saw it vaguely resembling a teddy, he stopped the proceedings.
