Design and Layout of Wood Wagon Axles | Engels Coach Shop

Wood farm wagon axles that fit under chuck wagons, sheep wagons, and box wagons are fundamentally the same as steel axles, though constructed completely differently. This goes through the comparisons and differences of the wood wagon axle. Building and restoring horse drawn vehicles involved understanding a variety of applications of the trade.

It is truly a comedy, in my mind. when it looks like you tail your own rip sawing actions. When you did that two seat buggy is when I noticed it as real comedy. Maybe it's just me. My Grand dad was a black smith all his life. He started toward end of the horse drawn wagon era and slowly moved into a more modern era of working on farm equipment. He must have done a lot of wagon repair work judging by the amount of old wagons and wagon parts in his scrap pile. I still remember as a young boy the sound of that huge trip hammer he had as he shaped iron. That thing would make the ground shake for 30 feet in all directions.

Such a simple and straightforward trick. I will teach it to my 8 grade Ag Mechanics students next week.

You have the skill and experience to cut the axle blank to length before shaping the ends. I suspect that many of us would leave the blank over-length in case it was necessary to cut off the sub-optimal outcome of our first attempts to shape the axle end.

Steel was quite expensive at the beginning of the 1800's because they had not yet invented methods to make it cheaply. As steel got cheaper, more of it was used. Wagons are an example of that. At the beginning of the 1800's they used steel very sparingly, putting it only in places that its strength, wear resistance, and better weathering properties, made it economically worthwhile. By the end of the 1800's, they used it far more because the price had really come down. Steel had gotten so cheap that it's strength and ability to be shaped quickly by casting, and drop forging machines, made it preferred over wood in many more places on the wagon. Axle evolution is an example of the increased use of steel, and decreased use of wood. Starting with bare wood on wood hubs and axles, then adding sleeves to the wood hubs and axles for wear rear resistance. When steel got cheap enough, it was a waste of labor to shape wood to the special forms needed to fit inside steel sleeves. By the early 1900's they realized that it cost less, and made a better product to use less wood and go with more steel. Many of the last wagons were made with solid steel axles that were forged and turned in a factory like car axles.

I'm Glad I Found THIS Video BEFORE Making New Axles for Grandpa's Old 1880s SANDWICH HAY PRESS, as I would have probably made them Straight, like I'm guessing Grandpa Did 53 Years Ago when He Made the ones that are on it now and partially rotted away again. Now I Know to Carve In the Camber & Toe-in which I Highly Doubt Grandpa did back in 1968/69 While I'm waiting for the 3rd video (to be uploaded Next Week) showing them being done on a "Duplicating Machine" or "Tracer-Lathe" of sorts, I'm guessing it is similar to what I always figured on doing, Jury-Rigging one of them to carve out the tapers with a Router as they spin between centers. With what I Know NOW, even without seeing the third video yet, is that I will need to make Double Centers in each end of the axles so I can off-set the opposite end from the one I'm cutting to get the proper angles. GOOD TO KNOW Ahead of Time. Giving it a little more thought, I can probably Skip the "Camber" as it has Steel Wheels that should run "Plumb" as a whole rather than by the 'bottom' spokes of a wooden wheel as the spokes are angled in bother directions from the hub to the rim. I will still need the 1/8th in "Toe-In" on both axles though to keep the wheels against the flange and away from the nut.

Probably warped due to being slap worn out. Hot/cold cycles expanding retracting. Weight of the buggy couldn’t support rider anymore so the axles kept the memory. But today you can add water proofing like Thompson’s clear or stained to protect the wood 🪵 if one didn’t want to paint the body. ??
