We're building a 38" chuck wagon box and showing spacings and measurements of where the framing goes. This as an all new box fitted with old original box irons that will go on the restored undercarriage we juste finished. Thanks for following along.
This is the cordless Makita circular saw I find very useful:
Makita cordless circular saw - amzn.to/3tYTmyS
Makita Biscuit Joiner - amzn.to/3OidpAa
Makita Biscuits for Joiner - amzn.to/3tFUNSK
Makita XFD12 cordless drill only - amzn.to/3m8lcBZ
Makita XFD12 package drill - amzn.to/2WiXwAB
I have used Makita tools for decades. I am not sponsored by Makita, I just like the tools.
These links are Amazon links that also support the channel if you choose to use them.
Thanks

When one of my ancestor’s family arrived in Oklahoma they started making a sod house. A surviving letter says the bottom of the wagon was eleven feet long, which is how they came to have a front door six feet tall and a back door five feet tall!

I have been watching you for years, I live in NC but have travelled extensively in the west but have spent little time in Montana, just never worked out with when we were traveling. Fires, late snows, or just ran out of time. I told my wife that if we get the chance to go back , then we are going to Montana and I wanted to meet a true craftsman

In places which get annual snow, salt is applied to the roads. South Main Auto in Avoca NY is a wonderful RU-vid channel. He heats rust-frozen nuts with a torch to "break them loose." He does not reach the high temperature Dave does in his forge. Iron ore _is_ rust. Both are iron oxide. High heat will convert the oxide to the metal if there is a reducing agent in the forge. It is clear that Dave's forge has reduced all of the rust to iron. We can see the absence of rust when Dave removes the nuts, 3:00.

One of the things I like about watching your videos over the years (besides all the good stuff I've learned!) is to see you doing a lot of things per wood working and some metal works that are the same methods I came up with for my own projects. kinda adds validity to my logic. that someone else came to the same conclusion and decision to do it that way for good structural or mechanical life. thanks for sharing. Re-use of those irons sure made for a lot of refurbishing, I bet. But a lot less work than smithing all those pieces new. And it makes sense if you had them in the shop. Thank you for all the great videos, and the knowledge you are cataloging. I watch all of your videos.

Hey Dave, I still need to watch further episodes of this box build to see where those underbed supports will line up. There must be a reason you spaced them as you did. For just a removable wagon box, as I tend to be somewhat OCD,, without knowing why I would have "Evenly Spaced" those supports for the bed. Time for the next episode to learn why the past wagon builders were less prone to be OCD. Great Video, Thanks.

Something that might help you when it comes to glue up is to use a plastic straw, one cuts the end at 45 degrees. Then use it to cleanup the glue, as this saves a lot of cleanup. Just run the straw along the seam and it will catch all the excess glue. Just a hint to try to help.

Changes in humidity - it's OK to assemble tongue and groove floor boards tight. I was half expecting maybe to use some spacers when nailing to allow for swelling, but of course tight prevents racking.

I enjoy your skill and have been watching for,oh a long time,would you consider powder coating the wagon hardware,it would last a lot longer,I'm sure blacksmiths a century ago didn't have spray guns in fact they probably diped the parts and hung them on a wire to dry🤗😎🤗😎
@thisnicklldo
@thisnicklldo 2 года назад
Invention of the devil, powder coating. It might last longer, but it will come off with knocks and rust getting under it, even if that's a few years after what would happen with paint.. And then it's un-maintainable. Impossible to strip without removing completely and sandblast (and even then, the sandblaster has to be more diligent than he figures his time is really worth), can't overpaint it, can't patch it. As far as I'm concerned, powder coating is only of use to corporations making consumer durables - a good enough coating to survive shipping and retail, looks smart in the show-room, and guaranteed built-in obsolescence after a few years.

Greetings Dave, You normally build your projects using the past methods of the Wheelwright trade. When you were assembling the floor of this wagon you attached the floor boards to the cross frames with nails. Ok, this is how these wagons were assembled years ago, no problem. My question is, why didn’t you use some Titebond glue on the tops of the cross frames? You used Titebond on the side boards corners. Wouldn’t the floor boards being glued to the cross frames add rigidity to the wagon floor and keep the nails from popping out? I don’t doubt your methods, you are the consummate craftsman, just wondering? Thank you for all of your videos.
@dwightl5863
@dwightl5863 2 года назад
I'm thinking that without the glue, the floor will be able to expand and contract. The nails will allow that to happen. Whereas if glued, that won't happen. IMHO
