Designing Robotic Joints For Concept Artists

A long time ago I heard a quote from a concept designer about designing robots: "Once you've designed which type of joints go where, the rest of the design process is just window dressing". And there is some truth to that. After deciding what the robot's purpose is, the next most important thing is deciding how its going to move to achieve that purpose. And to do that requires joints.
Many robot designs use "magic joints" that seem to always be able to bend in any direction you want, but to truly make a believable robot, you need to at least know how real robot joints work before you go off and make something more fanciful. So this lesson is a quick discussion of the major joints you'll find in actual robots, and then a few examples of more complex joints to spice up your design.

Good stuff! As a mechanical engineer, these mechanisms are all too familiar! One thing to maybe mention to add 'flair' to the designs, is that things like hydraulic cylinders require hydraulic fluid, usually brought in by flexible hoses connected to them. they are then strung along the 'arms' or whatnot, and certainly add more realistic details to the final design. There might also be limit switches or sensors, so those hose lines might also have 2-3 more 'power' lines bundled up with them adding even more details. All of that adds to the realism, even if the final result might not necessarily work 100% in the real world.

Thanks Refracted, and ya, love using those hoses for hydraulics. Maybe I should do another video where I focus on adding pipes and wires that actually have meaning rather than random stuff that just looks cool :)

I find somewhat magical ball joint also very useful. When all the mechanics tucked out outside (hydrafulics) or inside the sphere of the joint. It's mostly used in japanese mecha designs.

I am pretty sure your elbow joint at 5:40 technically has 2 degrees of freedom since the are 2 different angle inputs for each joint

So I see what you mean. What I was trying to get across was that you only get rotation along 1 axis, even though you have two joints that gives you better freedom along that one axis. So maybe I should have said "rotation around 1 axis" instead.

I've seen a new type on the tesla robot with two parallel extending piston style motors joined to a t shaped connection, which works for wrists elbows and the like

This is very useful stuff, thanks a lot. But as a concept artist I wonder how to power or fuel these joints to make them actually move? It will make designs much more believable.

Glad you like it! There are many sorts of motors that can make these joints work, such as step motors or hydraulics. So yes, as well as knowing how the joint will bend, you can also play with motor types, which can give it even more believability.

To be honest since all the progress of AI I have lost a lot of motivation to create 3D Soon this technology will reach 3D (look at dall e and midjoarney roadmap) How do you see this technology in relation to our professions and careers? how to bring back my motivation ?

Well in some ways the subject mentioned in this video is going to be extra hard for an AI to handle. AIs currently are really good at looking at a bunch of images and mimicing them. But it has no sense of why it's making the image. Robot joints is a design issue, it's all about why, it's how to make the robot actually work and articulate. Not saying AIs will never get there, but even once they can mimic 3d models, they're gonna put the joints in weird spots and it'll be up to the artist to know that's wrong and fix it. Not sure if that gives you some inspiration back, but if you're a concept artist, focusing on design I think is a much safer bet right now.

Dude i think you are right but at the end you should listen to yourself and ask: why should i ask for permission rather then tell the world how things will go with my life! So if you enjoy doing things - go do it. You will learn to learn along the way! That`s the skill that will save your arse during this AI revolution, because no one knows which profession is next. And you need to learn new things and maybe even start over again and again from 0.
