Jesus said, “Do not heap up ‘empty phrases’ (Greek, battalagesete, which means to stammer, babble, prate, or to repeat the same things over and over mindlessly) as the Gentiles do. Jesus was referring to the practice of the pagans who, through mindless incantations, thought they had to strong arm their pagan gods into getting what they want. The Greek simply does not say "vain repetitions" at all. Also the Lord Himself taught a prayer to be repeated, the Our Father or "Lord's Prayer." The Lord Himself also repeated the same prayer 3 times in the Garden of Gethsemane in anticipation of his Passion. The point being made by us here is that acts of love (and prayer is fundamentally an act of love of God) are repeated because one desires to love more, to love more deeply, and to love more perfectly. Not by a long shot does the Lord prohibit repetition. The problem is emptiness--and you can be praying empty words in a long 10 minute extemporaneous prayer just as much as one can praying a Hail Mary. The issue is the disposition of heart. Yep. As a Protestant (albeit one that's increasingly open to Catholicism), I've always considered Steven Anderson a bad example of a pastor and professing Christian and ignored what he has to say. And from my experience, other Protestants who are familiar with him generally feel the same way.

Do you just call anything you don’t like “the fruits of Protestantism?” Is it fair for me to call the clergy sex scandals “the fruits of Catholicism?” What about the pillaging of Constantinople and Jerusalem by the crusaders? Are those the “fruits of Catholicism?” A bunch of Catholics did it, so can I just construe that as what all Catholics would approve of? How about anti-semitism? That’s one of Catholicism’s oldest, most time-honored traditions. The fascists in 1930s Italy and Germany used church teachings over the centuries to justify their treatment of the Jews. Is that the “fruits of Catholicism?” Some Protestant traditions still cling to church history, tradition, and authority. It doesn’t seem honest to toss high-church Anglicans and Lutherans in with “Bobby Joe’s backwoods evangelical fundamentalist movement,” now does it?

​@vipe650r this is why I'm suspicious of keeping track of the number or amount of time repeating a prayer and them telling someone about it. I think its good to pray in obedience to a spiritual father, and you should make sure you are at least doing the minimum of what he reccomends, but no one else need know how much you pray. If you are trying to explain what Is a normal amount say "I think this much is normal." You don't have to say well I do this much.

And this was during my journey from cradle Baptist to the Catholic church and lots of prayer during this time regarding following God's will for me and not my own. My parents are still and we're then angry from challenging their beliefs they had of the Catholic church from what they were taught in the Baptist echo chamber. A lot of debating and then saying things against me and my wife. And then watching that episode and seeing no matter what happens we do have a heavenly Mother there to embrace us and bring us deeper into her son our Lord Jesus Christ. To note most of my cousins and uncles are pastors and missionaries in the Baptist Church.

Jesus Christ only Established ONE CHURCH, and prayed for IT'S Unity, just before He Ascended to The Father. That ONE United CHURCH, is The Catholic Church. It's been here for 2000 years. It's teaching and doctrines are THE FULL TRUTH. Christ Established The Church. 383 years later, The Church, in it's Divinely instituted Authority, determined which Gospels, and Epistles would be officially Canonized Scripture, and produced The Bible. You probably know most of this, but still choose to REJECT The Church Christ Established and create your own. What, The Church Jesus Established isn't good enough for you? The Church is The Body of Christ. He is The Head, The Church is His Body. Would you decapitate Christ? And throw His Body in the garbage. No I don't. I don't mock, but I do disagree with the repetitious prayers. They seem to be designed to meet a quota which God never commanded, rather than coming from the heart. That said, I know many who perform those may feel it comes from their heart. Still, God should be able to hear us without us keeping tally of exactly how many times we repeat ourselves. Prayer changes us, not God. So it is not to meet a quota, but to help us connect to God in prayer, to open ourselves to Him, and for the words to more deeply reach our hearts.

I didn’t know exactly what it was until this video. (I’ve heard a lot of liturgical prayers, I just didn’t know what it was called.) as a Protestant, I find it beautiful. Stay faithful.

I've said that prayer instinctively, as a protestant. This was long before I ever heard of Orthodoxy, and that it was one of their favourite prayers. I have hear protestant pastors quizz the congregation as to what is the shortest prayer cited in scripture. A lot of us knew it too. So it is an acceptable form of prayer among many protestants too. We generally won't repeat it for hours, that is a bit odd. I'd lose the thread and it would turn into noise, but that's me.

No, he's not typical. We generally like our pastors as humble, gentle servants to a their flock. This guy is spiteful. It's sad that there are Christians that like him and he has his audience. More of us find him an embarrassment though, and we feel like apologizing for this garish display. That's why we love Pastor Gavin Ortlund, who does represent us and Christianity so well.

​@@ihiohoh2708Im pretty sure this number that shows up when you ask google comes from the non-denominational groups, that would technically count as their own denomination (even though they're all pretty much the same thing). If I remember correctly James White and Jimmy Akin in their recent debate confirmed that the number excluding non-denoms was somewhere around 400 to 800.
