Desqueezing and Exporting Anamorphic Widescreen in Davinci Resolve 18 - It's So Simple
In this tutorial I'll be showing you how to desqueeze anamorphic footage in Davinci Resolve Edit Page and also how to export the correct anamorphic widescreen aspect ratio.
This is relevant when filming in 4k, 6K or even 8K and above using any anamorphic lens, for example a 1.33x, 1.6x or 1.8x like I'm using. Using this simple step-by-step process you will be able to maintain the correct anamorphic widescreen resolution for uploading to RU-vid in 4K or above.
When exporting your video edit in 2.39:1 or 2.40:1 aspect ratio resolutions these settings will give the black bars top and bottom. This is the simplest and most accurate way to achieve this in Davinci Resolve Studio 18.
I hope you find this Davinci Resolve video tutorial both helpful and time-saving for the future.

Unfortuneately, when I do this every workspace playback shows different aspect ratio, and size. Transforms are per workspace just in the transform effect inside grading node. I've tried everything and I have all different zooms and sizes of plapback or workspaces all look different.

You can directly de-squeeze by the correct anamorphic value in clip attributes :)
@Renclif
@Renclif 11 месяцев назад
Yes thanks I know, however some anamorphic lenses aren't constant desqueeze, such as the Great Joy 50mm 1.8x and many other anamorphic lenses, so that's when you have to do it manually. But yes it definitely saves a lot of time simply changing the clip attributes on all the clips in one go. I just wanted to show how to do it manually.

@@Renclif Thank you for bringing this up! I just bought the 50mm from Great Joy and was setback by learning the 1.8 squeeze in not constant. This tutorial helps tremendously! All my closeup shots (less than 4 meters I believe) need to be changed to 1.6 or 1.7 from my understanding. thank you for this video!

Hey, so glad you found it helpful! It's a brilliant lens with plenty of character and nice colour rendering and yes that's correct, typically subjects within about 4 metres or less will have a reduced squeeze factor of between 1.6 and 1.7. Although, there are even some cases where this can occur with further away objects, it's easy to adjust once you get used to it as your eye will pick up on it. Thanks for dropping by!@@12yfilms

If I’m not mistaken doing the de squeeze this way means you can’t key frame things like a push in or out without the footage distorting, is there any solution to that?
@Renclif
@Renclif 10 месяцев назад
Hi, yes you can still do a push in or pan with this method, for a zoom in or out use the Dynamic Zoom function in the inspector. Alternatively, if you want to set all of your clips to Anamorphic aspect ratio without manual adjustment go to your media pool and select all of your clips. Now got to Clip Attributes and change Pixel aspect ratio to one of the anamorphic presets. Hope that helps, thanks!

Hi so i have a sirui 35mm anamorphic 1.33x i shoot in 4k dci 4 4096x2160. In my bmpcc 4k i have the dezqueezed buttom turn on. My timeline is at 4096x1706 for a 2.40 aspect ratio. In aspect artibrutes i have set to 1.33x. Do i still need to unlick and change to 1.33?
@Renclif
@Renclif 10 месяцев назад
Hi, because you're shooting in 1.33x and your lens is constant desqueeze you can actually get Davinci to adjust your aspect ratio for all of your footage automatically by going to your media pool and select all of your clips. Now got to Clip Attributes and change Pixel aspect ratio to 1.33 anamorphic preset. Otherwise you can also adjust it manually if you prefer and yes you would need to unlink the X and y and set the X to 1.33. So two different options for you!

do you know how to rotate the video so I can upload a widescreen anamorphic video to Instagram?
@Renclif
@Renclif 5 месяцев назад
Yes, right click on your Timeline and choose Timeline Settings, under Resolution tick the box that says "Use Vertical Resolution". Now you have a vertical format, you then need to rotate your footage 90 degrees by going to your Inspector and change "Rotation angle" to 90 degrees or -90. Hope that helps!

Or you can press "cinematic" and you will not have black bars.

You mean theatre mode in RU-vid? I like the black bars because it feels like watching a movie in cinemascope and it feels more immersive.

@livestreamsuk6004 6 месяцев назад
Something wrong there mate. It looks right when you drop to timeline and stretched after you zoomed it.
@Renclif
@Renclif 6 месяцев назад
There's nothing wrong, this is the correct way to de-squeeze anamorphic footage manually and achieve the 2.39:1 aspect ratio or whichever ratio you prefer, so it's ideal for anamorphic lenses which don't have a constant squeeze. Otherwise you can use the other method where you change your Clip Attributes, Pixel aspect ratio to one of Davinci resolves anamorphic presets.
