Thank you so much for making this video. The link to the aspect ratio chart was invaluable for me as I was having a hard time to get my 4:3 2x stretch footage to look correctly in Resolve. Once I understood the correct timeline resolution for 4K DCP, it worked perfectly.

Helpful video! What about desqueezing only one clip in a project with a custom figure? For example, my DJI Mavic Air 2 has a Freewell 1.15 anamorphic filter and I don't see that in the clip's dropdown list for the Aspect Pixel Ratio.
@PhillipRPeck

Probably the best thing to do is (in the edit page) click on the clip, go into the Inspector, ungang (unlink) the X and Y parameters for Zoom, and just eyeball it.

Hey Phillip, just curious as you mentioned at the very beginning of your video some aspect ratios (1.33-1.6-1.8-2.0), but in the pixel aspect ratio from the clip attributes of the footage in the media page, there is actually no option (DVR 17) for 1.6. It does not directly concern me as I have 1.8 anamorphic lenses, but it does for my friends and many people I know who use the new Sirui lenses (1.6x lenses).. the problem I see by not doing it that way, is that, when you desqueeze your footage through the inspector (by unlinking the X ans Y), when wanting to zoom in the footage, even though you actually re-link the X-Y, it does not keep the correct aspect ratio and destroys the desqueeze.. little confused here to how to properly work with such aspect ratios. Otherwise, great video, thanks! Cheers S.
@PhillipRPeck
@PhillipRPeck Год назад
That's a good question. I'm surprised Blackmagic hasn't added 1.6 options by default given the prevalence of the Sirui lenses. I'm not sure what the best option would be but I'd recommend taking a look at the channel "Anamorphic on a Budget" and specifically the video titled, "The Ultimate Aspect Ratio and Anamorphic Lens Desqueeze Tutorial". There are also a couple videos on that channel specifically about the Sirui 1.6x lenses. I haven't found better anamorphic how-to's anywhere than Anamorphic on a Budget. I hope you can find a suitable answer there and sorry I can't be of more direct help.

Hi! I have an 1080p video, and want to turn it into a 23:9 video (1920x800). I set my timeline resolution to 1920x800, so IN THEORY, when I import the HD video (1920x1080) I'd only need to fix the position on the Y axis since my video is 1920 horizontal already. However it's NOT doing that. Instead it's kinda interpreting the footage as something smaller than 1080p, so I have to zoom in to fill the screen. Am I doing something wrong? :( Thanks in advance for any advice you can help me with!

One more question if you don't mind. I have the 1.6x Sirui. Is there a way to set a custom squeeze since Davinci doesn't have this exact setting in their native/preprogrammed options on the Pixel Aspect Ratio? 1.5 is pretty close but obviously not exact to achieve the results from this video. thanks

If you shot 16:9 at 3840:2160, and then select 4096: 1716 as your new resolution, don't you need to stretch that 3840 to a 4096? Wouldn't that reduce detail?

Hello, dear teacher. I record video with Black Magic Ursa Mini 4K EF camera and 2.35.1 image frame with 2x anamorphic lens. I want to have real anamorphic aspect ratio and 4K quality in the video output. Please guide me. In DaVinci Rizzalo Studio 18, what numbers should I enter for the resolution settings so that I have both anamorphic ratio and 4K quality? Thank you for guiding me.

Doesn't the 2.35 frame combined with a 2x anamorphic give you waaaaaaay too narrow a field of view? Does the Ursa 4K have an open gate option? That's what I would shoot

This may be a super noob question but here it goes. I'm running a Canon XH - A1. Your video example at 1:23 is the kind of video that I get. Apparently it runs anamorphic pixels. You're in 1080, but when I import it, I'm getting the same widescreen look but I'm only getting 1440 instead of 1980 just like your video is showing apparently. Is there a way to fix this to make it full screen? If you view my video Beyond The Ashes: Episode 3 the intro you'll see what I'm talking about. The rest of the video is shot in RAW so there's no issue fulfilling the 1980 x 1080 but I'm trying to see if that intro footage I can make 1980 if that makes sense.
@PhillipRPeck
@PhillipRPeck 8 месяцев назад
Whoa. I have no idea. Just checking out the specs sheet of the camera it says it has a native 16:9 sensor, so I don't know why you'd be getting a wide aspect ratio like that. My guess would be that it has a "cinematic" mode or profile and you just need to switch it to a different mode that shoots in 16:9 (1929x1080). Or, maybe it's a setting that has to do with 1080i versus 1080p
@martinwagnerproductions
@martinwagnerproductions 8 месяцев назад
@@PhillipRPeck It appears as though the still pictures I can take is 1980 x 1080 but the HDV 1080 is actually 1440 by 1080... so advertised by the company as a "true" 1080 camera, but in reality it's running 1440 x 1080...maybe shooting in 720 and up scaling to 1980 x 1080 would be a better option.
@PhillipRPeck
@PhillipRPeck 8 месяцев назад
@@martinwagnerproductions Have you tried 1080i as opposed to 1080p? It says on the specs page that it's 1080i, so that mode should give you the full 16:9 readout. If that doesn't work, then 720p might be your best option like you mentioned.
@martinwagnerproductions
@martinwagnerproductions 8 месяцев назад
@@PhillipRPeck So I fucked with it for about 6 hours today. That camera specifically is 480 24F but in reality it's 3:2. I have issues with HDV on the camera to tape, but can record to PC directly no problem. The key is to keep it in it's native. So Davinci I ran interlace, and 59.94 frames, despite the actual clip allegedly is 29.97 (idk how). Anyways, with a 24 timeline it'll upscale to 1080 pretty well so that's the solution if I want to record to tape, if I want 1080 HD, I need to run direct to computer software. The camera luckily though, is such high quality that the 480 24P (despite not being 24P) is actually really good 480 and upscales well. I tried 1080i at 60 FPSi and it did play back...That may have something to do with it. It may not like 1080HD 24P when it reality it's running 1080HD 29.97...but plays back much better than 1080HD 24P, which again, isn't really 24...so inevitably I'll need to test more to make sure 1080i is stable, as I've been having issues like I said with 1080 at 24FPS...I can always fuck with those settings in davinci anyways. I appreciate you taking the time to answer. What a clusterfuck.

Glad it worked! Do you normally have good playback but the anamorphic settings somehow made it worse? Unless the timeline resolution is a lot higher than normal, I can't think of a reason that playback would be worse than a typical project.
