Destin Offshore Kayak Fishing - Live Bait on the Reef. This trip was to some nearshore reefs off of the small town of Santa Rosa Beach near Destin. It was during the special November snapper season in 2019. I met a great guy named gary that morning at the beach and since he was kind enough to let me follow him out to the reef what was gonna be trolling for Kings turned into an epic Red Snapper trip! We used strictly cigar minnows and blue runners to haul in a mess of red snapper off of the reef. Live bait fishing on the reef was a blast. I hope you enjoy the video. Tight lines everybody!

Most important part about live bait off the bottom is to crank them quick off the bottom and the keep your COOL the rest of the way up. Relax and enjoy bringing them up without high sticking and pumping your rod. Promise, youll loose less fish. Tight lines/bloody decks

I’m headed out tomorrow from literally the same beach launch, same time of year, same exact kayak in tan, same bow cooler, same pedal drives. Just searched Destin kayak beach fishing and you came right up. Got some artificial reef marks to chase down within a mile. Planning on getting live bait on the way out with the sabiki and picking up some frozen shrimp before. Flatline the live bait while I’m drifting over the reefs and drop the frozen shrimp to the bottom. Gotta say though, I’ve literally never had that hideous sabiki mess happen and I’m an avid sabiki user, even inshore. but I always expect it and bring multiple sabiki and weights as as backups. I think it probably has to to do with getting greedy and letting some slack get in the line and letting them tangle themselves up. Would much rather have 2-3 than a full sabiki worth of bait that ruins your rig. Really hoping to get something crazy on the live bait, still havent caught a kingfish. And I know there is a possibility of gag or black grouper too, that’s the dream. I catch Goliath grouper where I live on the east coast of Florida but we don’t have many other groupers. and hope I don’t get too much red snapper on the bottom as they appear to be closed based on my research via fwc and fish rules app.

I have had plenty of twisted up sabikis. In the yak, I cut my sabiki’s in half and add another snap swivel on the cut end. Easier to handle, and I still get my bait. Have you tried using a knocker rig? Helps me with hookups sometimes. Aren’t those red snapper a blast?

Hey Lawless Tide! I’ll be down at Miramar Beach in a couple weeks, we’re looking to go fish the Destin Pass. Gonna be fishing from the Jettys and maybe from the surf. Targeting anything really, but mackerel, bluefish, and snapper would be awesome to cook! Recommendations for artificial lures and rigs? Thanks! Been watching a bunch of your videos because I just can’t wait!

Spoons, gotchas, jig heads with paddle tails, some suspension baits too. Make sure you have some heavier leader material handy in case you start getting cut off by Spanish and blue fish.

Great day of fishing, fun to watch! I've been thinking about getting off shore in my kayak, haven't built up the nerve just yet. lol. How far do you/would you normally go out? I'd like to find some reefs that are in close in the PCB area.
@TheLawlessTide

There are a ton of reefs off PCB. I normally go anywhere from 1-4 miles offshore to fish reefs.
@hazel10779
@hazel10779 4 года назад
This may be a dumb question; but do you ever anchor, fishing offshore like that? I could see where it might be dangerous but it seems like it'd be exhausting trying to stay on your spot against the wind and or current.
@TheLawlessTide
@TheLawlessTide 4 года назад
That would be tough with a kayak. I anchor inshore all the time. Only dumb question is one that isn’t asked😉

End of may is there anyway to catch blackfin tuna inshore? Have a little mariner 4 with a trolling motor and oars. Wondering if theres any spots to hook one up maybe paddling off the beach a few hundred yards. My only species I havent caught. Great videos as always you put me on my first bid red and crevalle from watching your videos. Love them and thanks.
@TheLawlessTide
@TheLawlessTide 4 года назад
Steve Crawford Did you mean offshore? If not Tuna don’t come inshore. Normally the water temperature has the black fin moved on by late May but dependent on water temp it is possible to catch one fairly close to shore that time of year.

@@TheLawlessTide Yeah off shore just wondering if I could paddle out just past last sandbar at our condo(pelican beach) or if I would have to be way further out or around reefs. I know tugboat louise gets them.. Just wondering If I should just stick to surf and jetty fishing end of june or try for something new a little further out by the last sandbar since I will finally have a little boat.

@TheLawlessTide
@TheLawlessTide 3 года назад
Don’t go by yourself for sure. If this is your first time find someone experienced to go with. You can go to FB pages “destin kayak fishing” or “emerald coast kayak fishing” and you will be able to find someone to go with, there are a lot of considerations like wind direction and speed, swell height, surf height, storm probability and more. If the conditions are not safe the guys on those pages will tell you. Biggest thing is don’t go alone your first time offshore.

@robberryman
@robberryman 4 года назад
You’ll save yourself a lot of sabiki tangles by using a heavier sinker on the bottom of the rig. I won’t put a sabiki down with less than a 1 ounce lead...and if I’m getting into threadfins or hardtails, I’ll increase it to 2 ounces.
@TheLawlessTide
@TheLawlessTide 4 года назад
I normally use 1 ounce and think I was that day but not sure. I also have a bad habit of letting the sabiki hit bottom. Thanks for the tip, probably needed 2 ounces.
@robberryman
@robberryman 4 года назад
The Lawless Tide yeah, buddy. Those baitfish will wreck a sabiki if you’re not careful. Sometimes they’ll wreck it even if you are careful! I usually go through at least two sabiki rigs in my attempts to catch bait before heading out to the numbers. I like to keep a quart sized ziplock in my BlackPack to store cut off sabiki rigs. Side note...I’m pretty sure I met you last summer when they re-opened ARS season in the fall. That first weekend, there was a huge group of kayakers who launched out of Navarre. You were part of that group, right? I was in a Smoke Camo Predator PDL.

@TheLawlessTide

To catch reds from the shore can be tricky inshore. Your best bet is gonna dawn or dusk and using something with some stink like cut ladyfish or mullet and throwing it out into a low light feeding area. Those reds will sniff out cut bait. They love ladyfish! I hope this helps some. Let me know when you hook up with one.

If cost isn’t a factor I would go test drive a Hobie Outback and an Old town predator pdl. Those are both stable and pedal driven which is essential in my opinion if you are going to be doing a lot of casting. They aren’t super light but they are light enough to load and unload by yourself. They both have great positives and few negatives, I would say between those two it’s just personal preference. I hope that helps a little.
