Good analysis. I hadn’t realised how bad the deadzones were until I played Halo Infinite. It feels so unresponsive by comparison.

I've played many FPS and started Destiny 2 today. The deadzone in this game is SUPER high by default, someone tested it and found it is 25% at default. That is insane. Most games like COD will have pro players playing at less than 8 deadzone for fine adjustments. But the problem isn't just deadzone, it's the dogshit aiming sensitivity acceleration.

Question. Now that destiny 2 has deadzone options on both the Radial and Axial movements. Are you planning on revisiting this video? Another question that I've been meaning to ask for the longest time. Considering Destiny 2 has a sensitivity curve that I do not like. Is there a formula I can use to revert the standard D2 sens curve and convert it to linear? I know DS4 has linear sens curve, but it obviosly overlaps with the Destiny 2 sens curve. So its basically Linear + D2 curve. Is there any custom values that would basically reset the curve to a linear state? I've been fiddling around with custom values and honestly I haven't used math to invert it to linear.

I am planning another video, but can't say when I'll get to it. To counter the curve to linear you need to mirror Destiny's curve(ignoring the acceleration jump I showed on my graph). I don't know exactly what function Destiny uses, but eye-balling the curve and DS4's curve tool, I think these get generally close: 0.09, 0.75, 0.56, 0.83 You might have to fiddle with it more though. I might recommend setting the in-game deadzones to 0, and set the deadzone you want in DS4W, so DS4W's output curve lines directly up with Destiny's.

Thank you for this breakdown !! I hate this so much ! I play on controller with max sensitivity on steam/PC and had the anti-deadzone turned up long time ago and just got a ps5 to play with my old ps4 buddies in console lobbies (they hate PC lobbies lol) and I get no input and then when I do, it shoots through the roof because I'm on 20 sensitivity and everything feels so mushy and it's horrible

I am not holding onto hope but they really need to address the lack of controller settings. I recently made the switch back to controller due to some wrist issues, and this game feels sluggish and I am not enjoying it at all. Playing cod/apex and others with the adjustability they have has been great, but this game severely suffers with this setup. It's not 2010 anymore Bungie, give us more options

This is such a great analysis, oh my. One question; could you tell me what settings I would have to use within the DualSense Edge menu to still keep the feeling of D2, but just make it a bit more responsive? Looking at this video, it seeems like I only want to slightly decrease the size of the red square, so that less input is required to aim around. Would be much appreciated! e/ Just saw your comment about the DualSense Edge.

@EternalDahaka

I don't own the Edge, and unfortunately it looks like it copied the Xbox Elite's crude curve presets, so direct customization isn't possible. The squarish shape can't be addressed without specific options. Digital may be the best to reduce the overall deadzone size depending on how much you can manipulate it, but the curve isn't changed until 10-15% of stick movement, so the deadzone can't be functionally set lower that than anyway. The specific curves displayed only directly alter the game curve if the in-game deadzone is 0%. Otherwise the first bit is eaten by the deadzone. It's a huge missed opportunity not to add an antideadzone option, or at least actual node customization. This is an example of a curve that would make the deadzone in Destiny feel like 1%, and keeps Destiny's default curve: www.desmos.com/calculator/xdl28zxpgm Any curve that starts fast instantly is the only effective way to for it to counter a deadzone. Something like this: www.desmos.com/calculator/kkciisfl2i would counter the curve to be more linear(not exact).
@uhBlakely
@uhBlakely Год назад
@@EternalDahakado you think the Astro C40 software would allow you to edit the curve to make it more linear?
@EternalDahaka
@EternalDahaka Год назад
@@uhBlakely You can get it more linear, though the Astro still locks customization for each node to 20% increments so it won't counter it perfectly. What you could do is set the first node to ~23% and have the other 3 nodes mirror the shape of the curve. Will probably still start slower than linear, but will counter it a lot. This isn't exact, but it would look something like this: www.desmos.com/calculator/yr8o8bmeu0

@EternalDahaka How did you manage to modify the curve from 2:50 ? Does it replace the default Destiny 2 one or (like DS4 Windows does) does it superimposed on destiny 2's aiming curve ?
@EternalDahaka
@EternalDahaka 2 месяца назад
That is just an overlay for the video. I used a function close to Destiny's shape to demonstrate how it would change. I don't use it here, but my antideadzone script for the TitanTwo(and any similar device) functions like DS4Windows and applies the curve on top of the game's curve.

The interactive graph is available here: www.desmos.com/calculator/uh8l62s4jz The stick movement overlay is cropped and overlapping layers in OBS. I overlay the deadzone image I drew up, and then fit the device monitor window with the stick movements on top. For this video I used the device monitor offered with the Gtuner TitanTwo software, but on PC hardwaretester.com/gamepad 's monitor works the same.

@EternalDahaka
@EternalDahaka 2 года назад
I'm planning a video for BL3, but I've already tested the camera. imgur.com/ppAt88F Inner deadzones are the normal deadzone. Just how far you have to move the stick. 'Axial' deazone adds a wedge of restricted diagonal movement around the edge of stick movement. This stick with the deadzone since it's square/axial(name is a bit confusing), so if you use larger deadzoner sizes the basic deadzone will already eat a lot of diagonals. Outer deadzone is when the acceleration jump occurs. This option is relative to the edge of stick movement, so 0.15 means that you'll hit that at 85% stick movement.

Hey thanks for the good video. I'll share this when the opportunity presents itself with Bungie. Judging from their past behavior when it comes to requested changes, they don't seem to do anything unless a groundswell of support rises from the playerbase. It took a long to get enough support for the Traction and faster look sensitivity, ADS options.

I also hate that you lower your vertical and have different x and y sens.
@pooger7778
@pooger7778 2 года назад
What about using a Cronus zen or another like device? Do you think by increasing the sensitivity in game, but limiting the actual effective stick size in the zen software. While also in that software you could adjust dead zones individually for x and y axis. Then by lowering the vertical dead zone more than horizontal, and decrease effective stick size in software. Do you think that would achieve linear movements? I’m wondering this specifically because I’ve been trying to use a zen for mouse and keyboard. But I can’t seem to get the mouse movement to feel quite right. I’m not a mouse and keyboard player but wanted to play with it a bit to see if getting into the pc world would be good for me.
@EternalDahaka
@EternalDahaka 2 года назад
It should be possible to get decent results with the right script. Linearizing the curve would require finding a close enough function to the game's curve and outputting the inverse, but you'd also need to counter the axial and radial deadzones to counter it properly on any angle. You could cap the output max values to never trigger the acceleration. For making the X/Y sensitivities more even, I'd imagine that you could cap the horizontal or some general outerdeadzone shape output after that conversion. I've never tried that to see how reliable it might be though. There are a few games that support M&KB natively. I think Fortnite offers it as a f2p option if you want something other than emulation test.

@@EternalDahaka hey thanks got the reply I appreciate it! Also great work on the video, I’m sure many people don’t even think of these things when gaming. But I find it really interesting, and helpful. Are you familiar with the zen software at all? After watching your video, I went and lowered the effective stick size to eliminate the acceleration and it worked really well. Now that destiny offers a higher sense of 20 max with the turn scaler it seems to be plenty fast without acceleration. Which is good because the in game acceleration makes the mouse translation feel really strange and inconsistent. After that I adjusted the x and y dead zones, so that vertical movement is more instantaneous as compared to horizontal. Also adjusting said deadzones for the x and y axis made the dead zone shape more rectangular, which has lead to more consistent movements. There’s also an adjustment for acceleration for each axis, so I set the y axis with a slightly boosted acceleration while leaving x axis at the neutral level. All in all this is the best I’ve got my mouse to feel, thanks to your video! Side note what is the program you’re using to show the stick inputs? I think that would be really helpful while tuning. Also do you use discord or anything, I don’t think there is a DM function on RU-vid. I know some other games are natively supported with mnk but I don’t really enjoy playing the ones that are supported and i main destiny. Not to mention after spending weeks and countless hours trying to figure this out, it’s just a fun side project to pursue. The zen is a really cool device, but the support is really bad and it’s hard to get anyone to help in their community. I think most people that use zen are using it for game packs and not as much for mouse and keyboard.

@@pooger7778 I have a TitanOne and Two. The interface/setup is almost identical to the Cronus adapters, but there are some differences between the programming between the two. The stick position itself comes from the TitanTwo's device monitor. Discord is Eternal Dahaka#1282 Support seems decent for the Titan models(the discord moderators are pretty responsive), but most seem to use the pre-made gamepacks over custom scripts too. As far as I'm aware, most M&KB stuff is handled through official input translator packs, or the software's own input translator. They have Destiny M&KB sets, but I've never messed with M&KB so I don't know how well it works.

@EternalDahaka

Not without some software on PC, or adapters on consoles. DS4Windows and Steam's input customization antideadzone options on PC would counter the size, but couldn't directly change the shape. You could either counter the axial deadzones(I think both force you to use an axial input deadzone when countering axial deadzones), or counter the general size with a radial deadzone, but leave the angular restiction. On console, you'd need a Cronus or Titan adapter and use an applicable script to counter it. These can run $70-100+ so they're pretty pricey. I'm not aware of any 3rd party controller that offers proper antideadzone options.

@@EternalDahaka So glad i’ve come across this video, have been looking into this deadzone issue for so long and i’m amazed it’s barley talked about. Something that i’ve noticed is that Steam config barely does anything due to how baked in these horrid settings are, i’ve actually had pretty decent success in DS4 Windows and REWASD combined, somehow lowering the max “sensitivity” in ds4 windows from 1.00 to .98 somehow eliminates the crazy acceleration at the far end, but doesn’t completely remove it. Also turning down the deadzones in DS4 and REWASD while disabling the Steam config/support has made a MASSIVE difference. It’s not perfect but I keep trying out new things and it’s getting closer to what I want it to be. Thanks for this awesome testing!!
