Destiny 2 Lore - The Fallen House of Dusk, its potential origins, leaders and more!

I know it's a little less than what you're used to but my back's against the wall.

Whether we wanted it or not, we've stepped into a war with the Cabal on Mars. So let's get to taking out their command, one by one. Valus Ta'aurc. From what I can gather he commands the Siege Dancers from an Imperial Land Tank outside of Rubicon. He's well protected, but with the right team, we can punch through those defenses, take this beast out, and break their grip on Freehold.

slightest correction, the house of wolves has actually gone completely extinct after one of the Scorn Barons, the Hangman, tortured and killed the last of the wolf servitors.

I believe the house of wolves was actually wiped out, as told in the gameinformer article on the eight barons, the Hangman. "The Hangman doesn’t just kill his victims - he hurts them. He has a specific hatred for Servitors" One of the things he is wanted for is "Eradication of the Wolf Servitors: Lead to the extinction of the last of the Fallen House of Wolves." House of Wolves is dead.

An other lore that gets me excited about the story for the upcoming expansion. Now I have to remember that Byf videos do a better job of storytelling than the actual devs in-game.

I believe Bungie said when we did meet Variks it would be in a way we wouldn’t expect so it may be possible that he’s been leading the House of Dusk . Even though they’ll bend the knee to another because of their rules I personally think they don’t like it if it’s to a non Fallen so Variks could have been secretly trying to muster his forces for the “perfect” moment to strike , we’re Guardians so good luck 😂

One thing I want to know is why the supposed Kell of the House of Kings (from Ghost Fragment: The Reef 4) is referred to as "a would-be king in yellow", which is undoubtedly referring to Hastur the Unspeakable from HP Lovecraft's Cthulhu mythos. Hastur is said to be an enemy of the Outer Ones, a group of gods including the Blind Idiot Sultan Azathoth, and a god quite literally known as the Darkness. Plus, Hastur is said to be the half-brother of *the* Cthulhu, which is pretty important context-wise. But what does the "last of his kind" line from the Grimoire refer to? It could perhaps be that it's referring to the fact that the Kells are dying off, and that he may be the last of the Kells, but that might be too obvious. I don't know, I'm not as versed in Destiny lore as the next guy, so it could be anything, but I find that King in Yellow reference to be interesting, especially because it seems very intentional in the connection Bungie is trying to make. But why?

i believe that the house of dusk is actually the house of kings and all the other houses joined them if you go to the winters run strike after the age of triumph you will find that the banners changed (from winters banners to kings banners (i believe this is only in the heroic playlist

I don't know if Im alone on this or not, but I would *adore* it if you made Overwatch League videos. I've been sortof interested in getting into it but It's a pretty intimidating field to me. Having someone like you, Byf, to soothe me in would be an absolute gem.

I am so on board with this new direction of the Fallen. Rise from their defeat, band together under a new leader with new practices and strike back. There is so much potential for a good story here. Also I still think Prince Uldren is their leader, but only a temporary one. He is only doing it to find the Queen. Who knows whats gonna happen after that. Variks is an interesting fan theory, but I dont think thats gonna be the case (yet...). Also great video and a good cause that you guys are pushing.

When you put it like that... you may have convinced me that Variks is going to be a big part of all this. Another thing that I've been thinking about is that, as far as I have noticed, the Fallen do NOT like the Awoken. Uldren had to have made them some pretty good offers to win them over, but with that being said what happens when his worth runs out? I think the barons are simply tolerating Uldren and that they would turn on him in an instant.

While I doubt that Variks controls the house of dusk I do think that who ever is leading them (be it a kell or an archon) is someone we haven't confronted before. Perhaps an old captain from the house of exiles who despised what the fallen became, or a subsection of the house of kings that abandoned their kell after Uldren took over

The House of Dusk is an interesting concept with Fallen becoming one, but can we just stop and appreciate the fact Byf does this because he loves this game as muh as us. Mithrax, the Forsaken from the 'Chances and Choices' mission was a House of Dusk Captain. There aren't many friendly Fallen out there (a certain someone being the only other one and possible leader if the House). Hope we get to see him again somehow if we didn't kill him . . . Also, the suffix of his name . . . coincidence? I think not.

I am inclined to believe that Variks is either leading the House of Dusk or is fulfilling his original role as a member of the House of Judgement by advising the Kell of the House of Dusk. What makes me think this is the military structure of the House of Dusk is akin to that of the now extinct House of Wolves (The Hangman destroyed all of their remaining House of Wolves servitors following the destruction of Orbiks Prime.) and as such the only person to truly know the organisation and miliary ethos of the House of Wolves was Variks.

An out there character that maybe leading the house of dusk is Aksis. Its very likely that his sentience still lurks in the SIVA modules, as evident by the fact that he may control SIVA as a whole, and he treats himself before his "perfection" as a different mind, he would not use SIVA because that would instantly put a target on the house and thus his own back, but he would need to find a fitting vessel to reincarnate.

So your saying we could have become the kell of the House of Winter in Year 1. The story of our guardian: receive an opportunity to wield immense power by destroying a enemy leader or gaining a powerful artifact, and instead trade this in for a gun.

I’m super excited for Forsaken story because Fallen and Awoken are my favorite races/factions. Couldn’t have hoped for better.

If you go back to the plaguelands, there is a certain patrol where you have to collect ether from splicers, and the drop has the house of dusk insignia on it

I don't remember specifically the grimore card that came with age of triumph that detailed uldrens encounter with the kings, but maybe something happened with the encounter with the kell, maybe uldren was beaten, or rather he was betrayed by the kell after he feigned loyalty

Byf also, I was reading the game informer article that talked about the new barons and I cannot recall the name of which baron it was (you know how awkward fallen titles are), but it said that he favored destroying servitors and it pointed out that while in the prison he personally devoured the cores of last servitors to the house of wolves, finally making them extinct by denying them their ether.... just thought it was cool, great video! Byf, please make another lore video on xol, with the recent whispers of the worm mission, we see xol talking in the mission and the lore tab of the whisper of the worm seems to imply he is alive and controlling the taken. I'd like to see your take on this. It is also imply that xol's death empowered him even more, much like oryx who routinely killed his sisters and himself to become more powerful.

Just a little analysis on the Sigil of house of Dusk. If you collapse the House of judgment sigil toward its middle, you can (sort of) have a big circle in the middle surrounded by several lines. Is it a proof that Variks is now leading the House of Dusk? No, but if it is the case, that's a cool detail.

Something that may or may not be related, and is probably just a mistake but in the nessus adventure “Exodus Siege”, most enemies have the prefix “assault” in there name, but the dregs are names “assault vandals.” I just found that out and just thought of this video because of what you said with the changes in the fallen hierarchy :)

Can you make a video on your predictions of what you think the three 'expansions' in the annual pass are going to be based on. Black Armoury - symbol looks similar to the traveller cage from Destiny 2 campaign, possible links to the Reef or Xur? Joker's Wild - links to the Ace of Spades, maybe we finish something Cayde-6 started but didn't get to finish before his death. Penumbra - location on Mars called Penumbral Depths, is there anything there that suggests to what this could be about, revisiting Rasputin? Thanks again for your amazing videos; I've been playing Destiny for a couple of years now but only recently got into the lore. All your vids make it so easy for people to really access the depth in the game that isn't always presented at face value.

Exactly what I’ve been thinking about Dusk in general, an excellent round-up of their circumstances, composition, resources and motives. In regards to who leads them, I believe it’s Variks. There are scannables in the EDZ marked with the banner and sigil of the House of Judgement, which is odd. A scannable in Sojourner’s Camp has Fallen files with Awoken File Headers. Variks hates the old values of the Fallen, which he saw epitomized by the House of Wolves, whom he declared “truly Fallen.” He also hates the Devil Splicers, and their turn from the worship of the Traveler, which he saw as even more of a fall. He states in Fallen 5 (I think) that the Crows will seek out the true Kell of Kells for Variks, and so that further lends credence to his involvement in this grand unification. Thus, I think Uldren and Variks May have cooperated, using the Kings to found the House of Dusk, seeing as high-ranking Dusk have yellow on their armour, and then attracting in the remnants of the other broken Houses with the promise of greater freedom and meritocracy, though I think the Telesto Lore tab proves that Variks moved away from Uldren, taking the Dusk with him. Uldren using the scorn would place him in opposition with Variks due to his beliefs about who are truly Fallen, as the Scorn are very similar to the Splicers in his eyes. The Telesto Lore tab indicates this, as Variks is wary of Uldren’s true motives, and how they may clash with Variks’ vision for a greater Eliksni. Also, I always thought the Dusk banner was representative of the Houses that make up the House of Dusk. The circle is the Traveler, surrounded by lines, representing the Devils, Kings, Winter, Wolves and Judgement (or Scar, possibly). Purple represents the Reef, though is also the combination of Blue (Winter and Wolves) and Red (Devils), with yellow displayed on the armour of powerful leaders. Anyway, that’s my speculation. I might be totally wrong, but the hints seem to be piling up! I’m hyped to see The Spider, since we may finally meet the Kell of Scar, and I want to see that Houses involvement in the recent events with the Fallen.

A small little correction. Wretches are beneath Dregs, somehow. Senior character Artist @RoderickWeise has been putting up a lot of the Fallen models, and informs us that "The Fallen Wretch is the lowest of lows when it comes to the Fallen ranks. He is expendable and that is why he's on the front line fighting against the Guardians."

I don’t know if this means anything since we know that forsaken is about the fallen and maybe some awoken working with each other, but while I was on mars and standing next to Ana bray, she said “an awoken ship was spotted banding with the fallen, hm could be nothing”. (That is somewhere along the lines of what she said since i can’t remember it fully since it was hours ago, but maybe forsaken will have some mars content as well)

I think Variks is definitely the one in charge of the Dusk Fallen. It's no coincidence that he's mentioned when we first scan the banner of the House of Dusk on Earth, when we're introduced to scanables, not to mention all of that other evidence about the Elder Cipher and all that. I think one of two things will happen in Forsaken. One, Variks allies with Uldren (he did serve the queen, after all, her brother would take priority) and leads the House of Dusk against us alongside the Scorn. Two, Variks allies with us against Uldren, and we fight alongside the House of Dusk against Uldren's forces.

I believe the five dashes flanking the circle represents the five houses that formed Dusk: Devils, Wolves, Winter, Kings, Exile. The circle represents their unity or perhaps a unifying force, like the House of Judgement. Taking the name Dusk is an acknowledgement by the Fallen that the sun has set on their old ways, and that they must adapt in order to survive and rebuild.

Hey so, looking at the banner of the House of Dusk, I can guess a few things, namely: The sigil has five lines above and below the circle, like the five larger houses around the Solar System which came together to form the House (Kings, Devils, Exile, Winter, Wolves, assuming Variks did not join the House of Dusk, or Judgement, Kings, Devils, Winter Wolves if he did) And a circle in the middle to represent unity.

There’s been an odd theory going around about the prince trying to obtain Taken energy to bring his sister back to life, which would definitely cause the guardians to be caught in his path, Cayde, if you feel up to it, I’d love to have a video about your thoughts and build on such an idea...even if it sounds untrue.

Maybe the friendly captain comes and slaps uldren and we win?

The house of Kings is also proven to have territory on Venus during Destiny 1, with the Kings' banners appearing in the area in which you fight the archon priest in one of the strikes (Winter's Run). Given that this area is in close proximity to the Ketch which used to carry Winter's Kell, the house of Winter must have known of this but not done anything to stop it. It could be possible that the house of Kings was essentially controlling or watching over the other houses on each planet; it is also worth noting that during the Destiny 1 campaign on Earth, the missions involving the Warmind are carried out by the Kings and not the Devils, which (to me at least) would suggest that the Kings wanted control of anything powerful instead of letting the Devils take what was in their own territory. There is also the case of the House of Exile seen on the moon during Destiny 1, where the hierarchy and leadership structure was under tension anyway; the highest ever seen in-game was a Baron. This house could be involved somehow as well given that it would be an easier house to take control of for Uldren.

I know this is a month later, but one thing you fail to consider with the Variks theory: He showed no signs of dislike or hostility towards us in the least. He was allied with the Reefborn Awoken, and us both through them and on his own. The only alliance the House of Dusk seems to be interested in is their bullets with our faces. Maybe Variks' loyalty was all a ruse. Maybe he secretly despises those with the Gift of the Great Machine after it fled. I honestly doubt it though. I'm personally thinking he's going to be introducing us to that spider-sigiled Eliksni that's gonna be sending us after the Scorn.

The only hint for Variks leading the House dusk is that quest but there is a scannable on Titan that your ghost says something like they are even scavenging broken servitorsos and that means they might not need ether

I think there is a good chance of Variks being the leader of the house of Dusk due to the less aggressive nature of fallen in destiny 2. For example, while doing the quest for the rat king you eventually do a mission on titan where you see a fallen captain and a hive knight fighting. You have the choice of killing either one of them. If you kill the captain it drops the key code you needed and the knight starts attacking you, but if you kill the knight the captain willing gives you the code and teleports away. In destiny 1 Variks was nice towards the awoken and guardians. He even gives fallen hunter cloaks away. He is willing to help guardians on missions with the help of petra, so I believe it is safe to say that Variks leading the fallen could have affected how the fallen interact towards guardians in destiny 2 due to his positive influence.

Really hope, that there's gonna be a video on the Barons, since we a lot of info on them, from Game Informer.

Hey Byf, really dumb question, but what's the Energy scout rifle you have equipped in the Infinite Forest gameplay?

My theory, Uldren's original plan was to take over the Kings, but that plan failed when Variks and Petra tracked him down and imprisoned him within the prison of elders. It was in that prison where Uldren met the Scorn, and began his plan B. But, outside the prison, The Kings needed a leader, and they naturally chose Variks. Variks then did all the unification stuff and all that.

It is very well possibility if some might know about a mission in vanilla d2 on titan there are fallen being captured by the hive and at the end of the mission you face both a hive knight and fallen captain but if you shoot and kill the hive knight first the captain not only didn't fight you but lets you take the power cell that's there

Can't the guardian become a leader of a house since we keep killing kells?

I think Variks was always in charge of the House of Dusk from the beginning of the game,but the backstory with Uldren and the kings could be an excuse as to why any fallen are following him at all. Still has some holes in it since the house of kings constantly comes up when our ghost scans the House of Dusk's stuff, and it seems like the Scorn (all of them) would have come from the House of Exile. Maybe Variks got jacked upon ether and kicked Uldren off the throne.

Variks as the "Kell of kells" has been a theory that I have liked since HoW, although I don't think that he really has too many issues with the guardians

My money is on Variks. I had the thought that he would later form a mega house as the Kell, back before D2.

It has to be variks who's the kell of Kells, if he didn't have an alternate story arc bungie would've used him as a vendor for sure. And didn't they say he was gonna get comic akin to osiris and warmind, they will use that to show his rise to power. The big question to me is will he be good or bad?

just a thought, but how about the house of exiles on moon? could Variks have gotten an archon from their ranks in exchange for letting them join him?

Wouldn't the growth of fallen limbs require Ether as they use that as sustenance or food, this could be why the barons were said to be dregs from the house of exile and raised ether partys to gain enough power to grow. The lack of ether and rationing of that resource could mean that wretches are the fallen which have gotten enough ether to grow above a dreg and marauders are fallen who've grown past vandal and can't reach captain due to the ether requirement. This makes sense due to the docking Caps being removed; it would imply that the fallen have abandoned docking and instead treat it like a free for all for ether, whoever gets it keeps it.

I wish I could go! (Especially because it's in my home state) but it's the same days/time as SharkCon (also in Tampa) and I can't miss the networking for my passionate career path - I'm sure Lord Byford can understand

Byf, don't forget the Fallen Legend about the Kell of Kells. With all that Ether, Variks could become this legend - an Eliksni of unrivalled power. For now he might be letting Uldren run around so he can take his time to grow 'fat from strength' in the Eliksni sense and so he can determine the power of the House of Dusk. Perhaps when the Guardians detain or kill Uldren, Variks will reveal himself and thank us for dealing with the problem, maybe holding a ceremony in honour of Cayde before making himself the Kell of Kells of House Dusk prior to reinstating all the other Houses (mainly by banner, colour, and having a Kell of their own) and taking the Fallen out of the fighting so they can settle. To that end, a crazy afternote to this theory would be to have Variks become a Guardian (given a Ghost by the Traveler) for honouring Cayde and redeeming his kind, or at least kickstarting it. Then in Destiny 3, playable Fallen.
