Before Cataclysmic, Reed's Regret with everyone on a Stasis subclass to gain the benefits of Font of Might was one of the go to damage strategies, especially during the Vow world first race. But now that Bait and Switch got a buff to 35% bonus damage, up from 20%, Cataclysmic, the raid linear fusion, can now take a stab at the crown. So who wins?
Re: Veist Stinger - I didn't explicitly mention this perk at all in testing because it is impossible to account for RNG during a damage test. However, if you have the ability to get an updated Reed's Regret, you should do so as having Veist Stinger on your Reed's can only be beneficial. Sorry for not being more explicit about this.

Tbh you said it yourself, the damage is similar enough that people would lean towards Cataclysmic simply because it’s more accessible. If you are watching this video to get the highest DPS possible, then you raid, if you raid, you have access to Cataclysmic. If you don’t get the god roll Cataclysmic, you can craft it to be exactly what you want. Reed’s may be simpler to use but good luck convincing most PvE players to jump into Trials where you can’t craft the roll you want when they can get an equivalent gun in their game mode.

I grinded 130 games of trials the week Saint had a triple tap firing line enhanced battery guaranteed at 2nd reset... I still use my ALH Vorpal Threaded Needle over it most of the time because pairing it with Lorentz and void font of might is absolutely bonkers total damage.

@@raiou5010 this season, 2nd week of trials. The vendor roll was chambered/fluted, enhanced battery/accelerated coils, triple tap firing line with a handling masterwork and Veist Stinger. Not perfect but pretty damn close.

I know other people have covered this topic already, but I'll always say your take is so valuable. You take practicality into account, both on the side of obtainability and usefulness -- while also not wasting anyone's time. There's almost no filler in most of the scripts you write and it's very appreciated. It's like you're the Kenji Lopez-Alt of Destiny -- people have covered his recipes sure, but all the bits/knowledge/experience behind the food is why I always come back to watch his cooking channel.

Something people are sleeping on for Reed's Regret is titans with Hoarfrost Z. They can use glacial harvest to summon stasis shards with both their barricade and glacier grenade. With elemental shards, you can give your entire team FoM and high energy fire without needing to use a super. You can easily do it multiple times per damage phase, and if everyone is running the tracking shards fragment it's extremely consistent. Also, for Rhulk in particular, Lorentz Driver is a top tier special weapon. Each wave of shadow thrall will spawn a lagrangian target so it's very easy to get lagrangian sight active for the damage phase. It's basically bad luck protection if you get screwed on heavy drops.

Cataclysmic with focused fury is also viable if bait and switch isn’t your thing and it also means you can use izinagi and not even worry about a reload.

Something I've come to really love about your DPS and perk combos videos is the reality check on them, a lot of other Destiny content creators simulate the same math equations but none of them put the warning "This is just a simulation, in practice things won't be perfect" and yeh, while aware there's some who will pull it off perfectly every time, it's still nice hearing the average player either doesn't need to worry about it or has other options, the whole "As long you're doing DPS, use either"

One thing to note is that firing line does require at least 2 teammates that are close to benefit from the 20% damage buff. Cataclysmic doesn't care about teammates, so it will be better in low man challenges like 2 man dungeon/raid or solo (flawless) dungeons.

I use witherhord, triple/fl reeds and high energy fire. Works great and it’s easy for good consistency. You should have run some numbers with reeds and witherhord to compare.

Honestly, this has convinced me to just stick with my Clown Cartridge + Frenzy Threaded Needle. The damage ceiling probably isn't quite as high as either of these, but missing a crit only impacts the damage for that shot, not future shots in the magazine, and procing Frenzy and keeping it up for the whole damage phase is a no brainer.

If you can proc volatile rounds, the DPS of Threaded Needle jumps quite a bit. I use my Autoloading/Vorpal Threaded needle with font of might and volatile rounds and Witherhoard at Caretaker. I top DPS most times and it is way less stressful than juggling weapons.

I've been having really good luck with my Cataclysmic with focused fury and successful warm-up. It's not the best, but with a Div and a loader on my arms, I can do some crazy damage. On Rhulk, it's really easy to tag a thrall with one shot and then dump 2 mags with focused fury before my bonus charge time wears off. It's probably not ideal in every situation but it sure is fun. I esp love it for nightfalls because I can tag an add and then melt several Champs in a row without reloading.

With divinity you can still hit the regular crit spot of whatever enemy. on lots of enemies that makes it alot easier to keep fourth times or triple tap working. i noticed in your footage on caretaker you kept aiming at the chest for the div bubble instead of just trying to aim for caretaker's head in the first place. divinity gives a debuff, the bubble is just a different/second crit spot

My favorite for non master is Lorentz driver with a threaded needle. Lorentz is a super fun weapon and I like the mini game of keeping the perk going. Definitely not for everyone but I like it.

honestly, with the factor of human error, I still like the focused fury Cataclysmic the most, since you can trigger the perk much more consistent and faster. and as long as we are not doing a day one challenge mode the extra 15k damage isn't the problen

Eh I think human error makes BnS better actually. Focused fury wants you to land 3 shots in a row to proc the perk assuming enhanced battery and with how some boss fights go it's easy you miss that third shot and triple tap doesn't proc and you have to reload removing your focused fury. BnS only requires you to do damage with all 3 weapons which can sound cumbersome against some bosses but if you absolutely can't land a witherhoard directly then landing it at the feet should be enough. Swap to your secondary and then BnS is active for 10 seconds. You get the damage bonus and it doesn't leave until that timer is up no matter what so it's always there until you proc it again.

What Terra said. Its really quite easy. Pop a wither, land one shot with your energy weapon, and bas is active vs ff needing precision. Another thing, bas is active for every shot in the mag. Ff is half the mag. Slight correction, bas is active for every shot besides the first shot

I just got a fourth times the charm and focus fury cataclysmic and I really like it as well while admitting getting those 3 head shots can be tougher in non bass situations , against bosses especially those with big ol heads and don't move during damage phase is were it really shines 20 percent is a little low thou how long it last helps it alot (11 seconds)

@@TerraTheWise Correction: Focused Fury does not need consecutive crits, it only needs half the mag to be crits before being reloaded. You can mix the 3rd and even 4th shots, as long as you get one more crit before reloading, you're good. That said... don't miss crits with these guns. If you're consistently missing crits, linears are going to be dog shit for damage anyways :p

I use Reed's only for my hunter. It's very easy and super consistent you can just buff yourself not relying too much on others (beside the Firing Line of course). The stasis super itself might not be the best damage, but it's ticking in the background like Witherhoard did, on top of that it buffs the damage for everyone when the enemy is frozen. My build is Witherhoard + any energy weapon you want depends on the situation + Reed's Triple Tap Firing Line with Sixth Coyote for 2 reload dodges, 1 Supreme Wellmaker + 1 Time Dilation + 1 High Energy Fire (if your teammate runs Radiant Light, usually Well-Locks for free charged with light) and 2 Font of Might (3 if your teammate not using Radiant Light, you can replace your High Energy Fire with it). Basically just pop your super for stasis well to activate Font of Might, your teammate who runs Radiant Light pop any super they have to proc your High Energy Fire, shot the Witherhoard and start blasting with your Reed's. Font of Might and High Energy Fire does stacks, if you can proc both you deal massive damage on Rhulk. HEF doesn't stack with bubbles or wells, but on Rhulk you'll be constantly moving anyway so it's still good to use HEF.

@@theyoungjc9401 ^^^ this. You can also use this build with izi + palmyra or even thoughtless + palmyra to buffs both stasis weapons if you so desire. Usually with izi + palmyra (mine is enhanced autoloading + lasting) I just pop the super, shoot the rocket + dodge reload, shoot the rocket again + dodge reload, shoot the rocket again + 4x honed edge izi, reload the 4x honed edge and then the normal combo rinse and repeat

for a solo player (such as myself) freelance trails this past weekend made it super easy to get ahold of trials weapons (i got 2x reed's), also I'm terrible at pvp so its def doable for the casual. I dont have friends so raid weapons aren't really an option for me. Ty for this vid datto

You can get stasis font of might charged if you use the crystal slide melee for titan if you have the mod that makes stasis charge like wells. You alao get multiple crystals so once you have 5 seconds or less break the next crystal and activate it again.

Great vid and testing, but I have a question. Is HEF completely out of the question? You can get CWL with an orb or any well (with elemental charge) and the buff can be stored indefinetely until you kill an enemy (so if you get to the dps phase with at least 1 stack, you're golden) and to top it off, it also stacks with Font of Might (even better if you're using wells to get CWL) I know HEF doesn't stack with well/bubble, and it's a 20% buff (instead of 25%), but in cases like Rhulk, you can't sit still in a well for the damage bonus.

i get that supreme wellmaker is easy, but the guaranteed font of might is a little unfair in a dps test. Witherhoard cat can also use explosive wellmaker for solar wells, and overall solar subclasses are better than stasis for bossfights (aside maybe titan but they are both kinda bad) Aside from numbers and timings and spreadsheets, I would say reed's is easier for 99% of content, and if you can get your hands on a 216 version especially, I would just run it. However, cataclysmic has much more potential for total ammo, which is what most people running a linear are going for.

So, I have a Reed's Regret I got from trials when I was torturing myself trying to prove to myself I can be good enough to go flawless. I managed to get ahold of ONE Reed's Regret: hammer forged rifling, liquid coiling, clown cartridge, vorpal weapon, veist stinger with a reload masterwork. I've practically gave up on trials after I went flawless so I'm thinking of replacing the old Reed's with something a bit more practical. I also have a Hezen's Vengence: smart drift control, impact casing, overflow, vorpal weapon, blast radius masterwork. I'm wondering if I should go out of my way to craft a Cataclysmic, or if I should stick to what I have.

Finally someone talking about damage in a vacuum lol. Ease of use is a big factor and why I see too many lfg folks just slap on gally for damage. Im gonna stick with cataclysmic for now, because I have a decent focus fire roll that serves me well. I also farmed for a good hothead so that’s an option too. Reeds is great, I just don’t have the right roll.

Hey Datto for the Izzi and cataclysmic combo make sure that you are using sniper rifle holster that way you start with the honed edge shot then switch to primary and then pull out the cataclysmic. When you shoot them by the time you switch back to Izzi after you use all cataclysmic shots the Izzi should be fully reloaded, so then that way you don't reload the honed edge you just shoot a regular Izzi shot and then proc bait and switch. Using the Izzi and cataclysmic combo on Kalli I was able to pull in 1,017,368 DPS within her wipe frame. Have a nice one homie :)

Regarding Reed’s Regret: you DO NOT NEED AN ADEPT ROLL. If you have a normal god roll (enhanced/ionized battery, triple tap, firing line) and slot an enhanced magazine mod, you’ll have 7 in the chamber. This means you can proc triple tap 3 times in one mag (for a total of 10 rounds) and gives you more time/chances to proc veist stinger. Obviously, you can take your chances and go for an adept roll to run adept big ones, hoping that you’ll be lucky with veist stinger, but you’ll only have 6 in the mag at maximum and just having an extra shot is better for more total damage (I believe, correct me if I’m wrong here) I also recommend having a focused fury roll for solo content, but that’s besides the point

In the case of running Trials for those that don't like Trials, it's worth running when Reed's availability and FREELANCE weekends align. You can get chances at a Reed's just by ranking-up, win or lose.

Pesonally hoping we get another ALH + Vorpal/Firing Line/Frenzy linear fusion because my most used damage setup is ALH Vorpal Threaded Needle + Lead from Gold Vorpal Carty. It may not do the most damage, but it's braindead simple to use and offers consistent damage. I'm of the mind while for most content, you don't need to deal overwhelming amounts of damage, but just simply enough to get the job done, which this loadout does. It's unfortunate that currently Threaded Needle is unobtainable as in my opinion, it's one of the easiest linears in the game to use. This is also the loadout that got me through Contest Mode Vow.

I think its circumstantial. I use Reed's with FL+TT at Caretaker because the fireteam is basically on top of each other. I found myself switching off of Reeds for Rhulk because firing line is almost never active (i use Sleeper). I will try the cataclysmic combo with witherhoard tho.

I've been running a firing line 4th times the charm RR with backup mag (for 6 in the mag to get more 4th times procs) with high energy fire. Cant imagine anything else beating this but not much room for error and it's hard to do perfect every time

honestly, having both rolls for reeds (enhanced/triple/firing) and cataclysmic (adept w/ enhanced/forth times/b&s/focused fury). i think it really comes down to personal preference, if i hadn't lucked out with reeds i probably wouldn't even bother with it despite the fact that its basically one of/if not the best linear in the game for any team oriented activity. cataclysmic excels in solo/duo content especially when combo'd with witherhoard/osteo/auto loading gls, not to mention that its miles easier to grind for than reeds.

I am gonna go cataclysmic because I think it’s fun to try and hit the ceiling, makes pve more engaging for me Also there’s been some other testing showing that it takes around 17 seconds of constant damage for a stasis/font of might user to catch up in damage to someone who uses the same setup but without font of might on a thundercrash. An Orpheus quiver does slightly less than t-crash, and a x8 star eater does slightly more. So unless your damage phase meets those requirements, I think cataclysmic is better

Some number crunching like this is fun from time-to-time, and if nothing else, having multiple options is always good. Nobody cared about Tarantula because it wasnt the DPS meta, but it proved to be invaluable in Lightblade. Don't stress yourself chasing for the ULTIMATE thing, you're better off getting whatever you can get and make the best of em.

I use a combo of auto loading Threaded Needle with vorpal and Izanagi’s. I spend the TN mag, shoot Izanagi’s and reload honed edge, and by the time that is done auto loading holster works. Sometimes I get a void well beforehand for FoM but I never worry about it. It’s nice since it is consistent, despite it not having the same damage potential. Still enough imo to get through the highest tier of content.

You should aim to get a fttc and focused fury cataclysmic, since vorpal got nerfed on heavy weapons a couple seasons ago, but still, good on you mate

I know this may sound stupid, but what about using fighting lion? It increases handling after fired by a looot. Wouldn't that cut the time for bait and switch

In any other scenario yes, but you have to account for charge time, and even if your switch was near instant it isn't enough time to pop off another shot

Datto.. Do you know or have you tested after shooting your izzy, you can reload cancel izzy,, swap to energy and STILL proc bait and switch? It still proc for me as per last week

I skipped over Bait and Switch and just went for FTTC and HIR on Cataclysmic. Ease of use and no real need to think about swapping weapons and reloading properly etc.

only issue i had with my TT/FL Reeds (that was pain to get) against Rhulk was that FL was rarely procced cos we were all over the arena. So probably gonna stick with Vorpal Reeds or Threaded, or go Sleeper.

I made some similar test the week of the buff. Then I decided to stay on my loadout (reed with autoload/line and whoard) 5 linear shoot->1 Wblob->switch to reed and is reloaded, more efficient than triple tap due you can miss a shoot and no time to reload

Does Bait and Switch necessitate damage on the other 2 weapons to proc? I mean, if you hit Witherhoard and your SMG on an immune enemy, does it still proc when switching to Cataclysmic?

For frenzy immune enemies will proc the perk so I would assume it may be the same with bait and switch, but who knows

I still prefer Witherhoard with my vorpal+auto-loading Threaded Needle. Never reload anything, and TN (void) with font of might means void subclass for even more winning (nova bomb, tether, ward). Plus it works with volatile if you're set up for that.

For me, every time I try using whiter or izanagi I tend to miss or reload wrong, when it comes to rockets, if it's not gally, I just miss like a goof. The setup I've been using is a toughless with rapid hit and firing line and gally, with that I was able to beat master Rhulk with lfgs. So trust Datto when he says: Unless you're a God tier speedrunner world first guy, it doesn't matter.

Can't a Behemoth get easy Font + HEF through a Glacier/Hoarfrost + Elemental Shards consistently? I think Scrub made a DPS comparison video on that with Reed's vs Thundercrash, but I might be misremembering.

If you use witherhoard and direct impact the boss, you can actually use taken spec which is slightly better than boss spec, because for some reason direct impacts with it make the enemy become a taken

from my experience veist stinger procs usually atleast once during dps so I still prefer witherhoard + reeds for raid bosses but for solo / when I cant guarantee firing line Cataclysm is the way to do it

After suffering for many hours doing Trials to get some decent weapons I got the Triple tap and Firing Line Reeds and a Fourth and Bait and Switch Cataclysmic I’ll just use both for extra damage if nothing else

This may be a weird one, but for me and my groups since Witherhoard can only be used by one person in the party, the weapon I use is actually Osteo Striga. It takes basically no time to fire the 7 shots needed to poison and its damage is actually competitive with Witherhoard

Datto, did you know there's a firing range in the weapon forge area? Right behind it there are floating rocks that can proc crit damage. It could be something to use in the future without worrying about ammo.

Witherhorde interactions are pretty simple: It's DoT does not stack. The floor and direct impact can stack, but that's it.

Reed's is more accessible to me as I don't have anyone to raid with (only raid I have ever done was Taken King). The freelance double xp Trials recently helped a lot with rolling engrams. I got almost god rolls without Flawless run and it's one of my favourite weapons now. I have only just returned to Destiny after several years.

Honestly my best dps right now if I'm not using rockets with gally is my tarantula with field prep plus a sniper with 4th times/Vorpal when I run out of heavy. What can I say, I'm pretty new
