In case it is of interest, the Germans did not know that their radio transmissions were being intercepted (though they knew it was technically possible) and that this enabled the Allies to use Direction Finding to locate them. They thought their radio transmissions were too short, and broadcast at too high a frequency, to be picked up and DF'd. The Allies used High Frequency Direction Finding however (HF/DF or 'Huff Duff') and could triangulate sub locations. For some reason, the Germans were reluctant to accept that HF/DF was a thing. Approx 25% of German submarine losses were due to HF/DF location. Sorry (as you are a former Radio Operator) if some of my wording is not technically correct. Great video as always.

I played the demo some months ago. I see that did quite a lot of polishing on the game. The game is really hyperreaistic and quite hard. In the Demo the uboats were very aggressive, circling back to the convoy and sinking ships while you were chasing them. One uboat would regularly sink half your convoy while you chased it all over the map.

I played the demo too and agree with you. It was more than a little unrealistic tbh. I speak as an erstwhile ASW officer and when I joined the Royal Navy some of our ships still had equipment that was very much rooted in WW2 technology, so this is very immersive and very realistic as a sim.
@TheJeyR

One of the devs said that when they released that demo they had to turn the subs hyper aggressive because for some reason a change they made close to the demo release date turned the subs too passive, and since they didn't have enough time to fix it before releasing the demo they ended up making them hyper aggressive as band aid fix. This release version apparently has it properly fixed

Early US ASW doctrine sucked. Drumbeat devastated east coast shipping and there was major political issues getting a coastal blackout done In the Pacific Japanese subs took a heavy toll on usually hard to hit warships, including the CV USS Wasp, a number of cruisers during Guadalcanal and severe damage to the desperately needed BB North Carolina Once air patrols were set up the Uboats moved to the gulf and sank many crucial, highly demanded tankers coming from the gulf oil terminals It was only when losses outstripped Admiral King’s anglophobia did they actually get help from the UK and form a coherent doctrine At the end of the day American industrial capacity made this a flesh wound in the long run and the USA’s building of the Liberty ships, the destroyer escort, top end patrol aircraft like the Catalina and endless CVEs made a war winning contribution to the battle of the Atlantic, the big turning point being black May for the uboats in 43. After that they stood no chance

Looks like a gripping game. My grandfather served as an engine room chief during the Battle of The Atlantic, with the Merchant Navy. Although his ship was never hit, apparently he could hear through the hull of the ship the whistle of torpedoes as they either missed his ship, or were on target to strike another. Nightmare inducing stuff that stayed with him to his death. Watching this video has felt quite strange with that context, but it looks a very accurate representation

Akshully Jingles, mid and late war hydrophone sets provided bearings (but not range) accurately enough a sufficiently skilled or desperate U-Boat could launch a spread at a target from as deep as the torpedo tube's inner doors would hold (believe 25-50 meters depending on model). And while they were rare as rocking horse shit, acoustic homing torpedoes did become a thing, which made life extra interesting for escorts until they were fitted with towed decoys. So safer when they submerge, but not safe.

My Grandfather was a radar operator on a Royal Navy V&W class Destroyer during WW2. He sailed on a number of Atlantic & Arctic convoys & he survived the war.

I love that someone made this game and it actually works as a solo player game, although I expect a team on each station would be pretty epic. This does make me wonder if Jingles has seen the new sub sim "UBoat" if he like this kind of game.

My grandfather did several combat tours on the Fletcher-Class destroyer USS Bullard (DD-660, Kidd’s sister) in the Pacific as an engineering officer (he was a 1943 Merchant Marine Academy graduate). Very happy to see this sort of game surfacing (no pun intended).

My Father would have loved this game I think, He served on two Tin Cans during his time in the Navy, USS Nicholsan and USS Deyo, he always liked telling stories about them tracking Russian Subs and pinging the poor bastards incessantly. Or a time he yelled at his Captain for walking on his newly waxed floor (He was not reprimanded) Thanks Jingles for bringing treasured memories back to mind

Those baby flattops completely sealed the deal for the U-boats in the Battle of the the Atlantic. Its cool seeing a game that covers an often overlooked part of WW2. Would love to see you do a series in this. I loved your Cold Waters videos, I imagine it would just as good with this game.

Fun fact, when a aircraft like a Catalina or Sunderland attacks a U boat it is known as straddling and it involves lining the plane up with the U-boat and aiming to drop the bombs/depth charges either side of said U boat and this is why my Austrian grandfather hates the Sunderland seaplane

I'm surprised no one's jumped on Jingles for failing to mention the importance of Enigma decrypts in blunting the U-boat threat.

That really is an overgeneralization in differences of tactics. When the US escorted convoys they escorted. The difference is that the US ALSO employed Hunter - Killer Groups built around a CVE. Yet, what truly won the battle of the Atlantic was the Coastal Command and US Navy B24s (PB4Y-2) being outfitted with aerial radar. IT had enough range that there was no gap in the Atlantic the U boats could hide.

Ex-U.S. Navy Sonar Tech so yup I will be picking up the game for some sub hunting that is more in-depth than WOWS. I still enjoy WOWS but this will be a nice fun time on the weekends. When your working 12 hour shifts though a 20 minute max game is perfect for when you do not have a lot of time. Thanks for the review Jingles. Always watch your WOT and WOWS videos and also Strays and some of your Aliens and War Hammer 40K.

One other factor on why the Battle of the Atlantic was won - industrial capacity of US ship building and the mass production of Liberty and Victory ships, eventually outproducing the ability of the U boats to sink ships. The other factor involved was the wargaming that occurred in the Western approaches command which rapidly worked out tactics based on the reports from the convoys (for example discovering that the submarines were sneaking into the convoy firing torpedoes and then just sitting on the surface and dropping behind the convoy whilst the convoy itself masked their radar signature from the escorts infront and to the sides, or developing a technique for running perpendicular to the direction a submarine was spotted in and then doubling back to deal with homing torpedoes fired at escorts.

Moin Jingles my great overlord and everyone to whom might be interested in this. i'm glad to finally see this game being released, but just for interest sake, there is a game called Wolfpack (also on steam) that is quite similar to this one except, you are the germans attacking in a submarine. besides that game is more focused on team play, i think you may like it as well.

18:00 I just want to add...all these factors that turned the Battle of the Atlantic on its head happened in a few MONTHS in 1943. May 1943 sticks out the most as VLR Liberators finally closed the Air Gap for land-based Aircraft, while simultaniously Escort Carriers became more available and also importantly was that the issue of a lack of fleet basins were addressed. Now add to this Naval Radar, Advancements in ASW weaponry and other detection, aswell as the constant use of the cracked Enigma meant that most U-Boat losses happened during and after 1943.
