So in this video, I went higher on the distance settings than normal, since the graphs were telling me it was a great idea. After wondering why my ears were getting fatigued, I adjusted the subs back down to +4 feet over the Audyssey setting (15.7 feet) and all was right with the world.
So above all else, trust your ears over a pretty graph! I look at the graph to verify a good setting (no glaring dips) rather than finding the "perfect" setting. I found the +4 feet idea by just closing my eyes and listening for the best sounding bass. Measurements just confirmed it.
To reiterate, when using your AVR room correction, follow the instructions on mic placement. For Audyssey, taking measurements more than 2 feet from the main position can result in some less than ideal adjustments.

@Subwoofer101 So I’m running 1x PB-2K now and I’m considering buying a PB-2K Pro to go dual. I know u say matching is important, are these models close enough that the combo would be ok, or should I do another PB-2K? Also, thinking of getting SVS wireless adapter for the PB-2K, and wiring the pro, would u recommend or no?

Why do you prefer flat versus reference in Audessey.? What is the difference
@Subwoofer101
@Subwoofer101 Год назад
Reference just sounds harsh to me. Sometimes my AVR defaults to it, and I'll find myself slightly annoyed. I'll go to check, and sure enough it's back on reference, then I switch it back to flat and I'm happy again.

@@Subwoofer101 appreciate your reply. Also should you do adding 4 feet to subwoofer distance first and then lower trim level to -12 and slowly move up or vice versa. Just trying to understand order of different hacks
@Subwoofer101
@Subwoofer101 Год назад
The only order that matters is doing room correction before adding 4 feet. Otherwise it doesn't matter between those 2.

Hi Subwoofer 101. Just a quick question. I set my Sub Woofer levels in the Speaker Level Settings on my Marantz. However, like the Denon I can also set the levels in the Audio - Sub woofer Level Adjustment. Do you need to set the levels in both areas or just one ? I'm just a little confused. Great video by the way !
@Subwoofer101

+T-Rev Man Thanks! I use the subwoofer settings in the Audio menu and pretty much ignore the levels in the Speaker menu.

OK. So does the setting in the Subwoofer Level Adjustment override the volume setting in the Speaker Menu ? I just purchased a new Marantz Receiver and two PB2000's and I have to say that these sub woofers are EVERYTHING you say they are. I just want to make sure I set them right.........

Thank you for another good video! As for me one of the most complicated moments in subwoofer setup is the phase adjustment. All the subs that I used had better sound at phase rev or 180, but svs default setting is zero. Please, make a video about phase, and tell us how u adjust it. Thank you very much!
@Subwoofer101

+Павел Дзивульский I plan to do a video on it, but I leave the phase at 0 and make adjustments through the distance settings. Much more control that way.

hello, greetings from Mexico, I think that the subwoofer settings would do better with the phase response, you would be spliced better than seeing the frequency response, I would recommend you see the phase response, you would get a better job.

distance on Marantz equals delay in ms on a DSP - you should move on and use miniDSP. ofc your subs have fixed position due to room size and furniture, etc. so there is a limitation on what you can actually do by correct placement. so... delay, phase and eq remains.
@Subwoofer101
@Subwoofer101 4 года назад
The Mini DSP 2x4 can only add delay. The Distance Hack, adding 4 feet to the subwoofer after room correction, actually sends out the bass signal a little earlier. It does this by adding delay to the other speakers. Largest distance value goes first, smallest distance value has the most delay. There is some method to my madness. 😁

Thank You for the great videos! I recently play around a lot with my subs to find the best settings. I was wondering after watching this video, how setting distance could affect the shape of measurement if at a time it is measured on one speaker (sub) only? I thought it distance converts down just to timing, and I don’t understand how this do anything with the shape in this circumstances?

Why would he switch from reference if he's in loud speakers? Loud speakers are designed with things like the bbc dip and the rolled off high end. Flat would be forcing the speaker to play out of spec even more

Thank you for another great video, I love your work and find it so helpful. Quick question if I may... How come your subs don't over power and bleed over the top of your mains? So you get what I mean? I've come to learn I've had my sub muddling over the mains at around the crossover because I too fan the LFE too hot. Dialed the gain from the AVR right down and now my stereo, separation and quality from the mains is sublime!
@Subwoofer101
@Subwoofer101 6 лет назад
Thanks! It has a lot to do with the response curve of these subs. Of course they can still be overdriven, and I did a video about adjusting subwoofers by ear. Subwoofers with flat response curves are much easier to integrate. You can also run the crossover higher without much penalty, reducing the stress on your AVR. Dual subwoofers also help a lot. With fewer dead spots, the integration is more seamless. All of that combined means you can have "more" bass without being overdone. Lastly, adding 2-4 feet to the subwoofer distance value determined by room correction can reduce a few cancellations, providing a full and complete sound. My AVR sets the subs at 11.7 feet, and 15.7 feet is optimal for this room. Here's a list of subwoofers that I would spend my own money on, with more details about the response curve I'm talking about. www.subwoofer101.com/best-subwoofers/

Hoe about playing a sine wave att the frequency level and adjusting the distances while having the spl meter up and seeing where it becomes loudest? If distance setting is the same as phase setting then that should also work

Hi subwoofer 101, a question concerning the set up of the subwoofer, how do I get a more tighter bass response instead of a very low bass response, can I arrange it with the low pass filter on the sub & AVR settings? I am also listening a lot of music and was wondering if I can use the sub as well. What would be the best settings to listen to Music? Hope you can help me. Cheers! Thanks for sharing your videos.
@Subwoofer101
@Subwoofer101 7 лет назад
The best way to get a tighter response is to go dual. Most subs are too shallow, but the subwoofers on The List are powerful at depth: www.subwoofer101.com/best-subwoofers/ Good bass should be good with both movies and music. See today's video for adjusting the distance settings and the effect it has.

What do you mean when you say the subs are using outlaw correction?
@Subwoofer101
@Subwoofer101 5 лет назад
The previous subs were Outlaw, and when I ran room correction, the room correction was for the Outlaw subs, not the SVS subs. Room correction is specific to the equipment it's measuring, and if you switch subs and don't run room correction for the different equipment, things are wonky.

Dear sir, a few tidbits: regarding crossover section 15:18 - 15:30 - the subwoofer does get more then 40 hz, just not from the fronts, remember the .1 (or LFE channel) 15:29 - 15:42 - your fronts are not getting alot of 20 hz information if your crossover is set at 90hz :-) or is that a result of LFE + main settings? Keep up the good work you have a very nice channel. ps. the Klipsch r-115sw subwoofer is worth reviewing (won the 'speaker system' EISA award 2015-16) Henrik Sound engineer
@Subwoofer101
@Subwoofer101 7 лет назад
Hi Henrik, The filter for the subwoofer is typically a 24 db filter above the crossover setting on most AVR's, so it's a pretty "hard" cutoff, while the filter for the speaker channel set to "Small" is only a 12 db filter below the crossover point, so it's a "softer" cutoff. So even with the crossover set to 90 hertz and "Small", if I turn the subwoofers off (using the switch on the back of the subs), I can still hear output down to 20 hertz, though it's more faint than when it's set to "Large", and of course nowhere near the dynamics of a good subwoofer. My point was that you don't lose as much output on bigger speakers as you might think by running a higher crossover. I go into more detail here, with help from Ed Mullen at SVS: www.subwoofer101.com/setting-up-your-gear/large-vs-small-lfe-main-double-bass-etc/ You are correct that you still get bass from the other channels, and also from LFE specific signals from movie soundtracks, I believe. With music though, setting the crossover to 40 hertz provides a very narrow bass window (20 hertz "audible", assuming all channels are set to 40 hertz), and I find it particularly unsatisfying. Even with just the fronts set to 40 hertz, with music most of the signal goes through the front channels, so the impact is noticeable. A higher crossover also makes integrating the subwoofers by ear easier, as you have more audible range to judge the bass levels. The smaller the window, the harder it is to get it dialed in. Room correction never seems to have enough bass. Always good to have a sound engineer watching to help keep me honest! I appreciate the feedback, I'm trying to grow the channel, but it seems RU-vid is always moving the goal posts. I'll keep working at it though!

Are you running sweeps sub and left main?
@Subwoofer101

Great catch! Yep, somehow it ended up on left. Believe it or not, the 15.7-16.2 feet range looks even better, and really demonstrates the improvement of adjusting distance. I mentioned you in this post: facebook.com/subwoofer101/posts/1758505961117017
@Subwoofer101
@Subwoofer101 7 лет назад
Patk2, If I set the subs at the same levels as the mains (mid range), they would be terribly over driven. It would be way too much bass. I run subs pretty hot and heavy, and even at that they measure several DB under the mains (C weighted). If only it were that easy. This video on dialing subs in by ear is how I really fine tune the subwoofer's output: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-dEFkPe7RrQE.html Regarding powerful subwoofers, the whole idea is having headroom, no speaker sounds great at it's absolute limits. These subs could easily cause structural damage, but the real benefit is extraordinary bass that's clean, deep, convincing, powerful, and true to life. When real life thunder happens, and I mean in an actual thunderstorm, you feel it in your chest. That's very hard to reproduce in a home theater in a truly convincing way. A subwoofer that delivers "serious" output down to 20 hertz (very few do) is a game changer. Any of the subs on this list will be a dramatic difference compared to most typical subs out there: www.subwoofer101.com/best-subwoofers/ As you go up in price on that list, the more convincing the thunder is. I'm pretty darn happy with the bass I'm hearing, chest shaking when called for, but not fatiguing.

How far is your listening position from your back wall?
@JasonSouthwell75
@JasonSouthwell75 7 лет назад
Been binge watching your vids. Good stuff. For the past 12years I have had a basic 5.1 setup only using some Cerwin Vega 15”3way front speaks set on large as I never felt the need for a sub. I got those things when I was 19 and just have never been able to let them go. I decided it was time to do some upgrading as my old Harmon 630 didn’t even have hdmi lol. Picked up denon 4300 and 2 more surround speakers and 4 ceiling mounted atmos. Still felt the need for more bass. Used your links and purchased a pair of the pb2000. First hooked up yesterday mounted in front next to mains like you do, I was a little worried. Not what I expected, however I have a rather large room 15x30 and the back 15 i keep empty for a virtual reality playground. Today I moved them to the side walls just behind my first row of seating and that set them on FIRE. Love them! So far so good, thanks for the tips and tricks.

+Jason Southwell Probably effected the timing the same way I use distance settings. I wish I had more room to try all of the different configurations. Thank you for using my links, that helps a great deal! The 4300 is a quality unit too, smart way to go.
@JasonSouthwell75
@JasonSouthwell75 7 лет назад
I did play with the timing quite a bit with them in front. I just think 30ft room is quite deep. On the side walls with them about 12" away from the walls it was pounding pretty hard like being in a car. I have to take a break from my listening experience for a couple days now lol.
@Subwoofer101
@Subwoofer101 7 лет назад
+Jason Southwell Good point about the depth of the room, that makes sense. I could see that causing issues. That's probably the best setup for your room. Even the PB-1000's can hurt you if you overdo it. The first time I ever took measurements I had the volume too high, and I wasn't right for a few weeks. Even now, every time after setting up new subs I have to go easy the next day, since I listen at higher levels during setup.

Excellent video! Definitely one of your best.Something else for you to perhaps try, Mark Seaton has written on AVS forum that sometimes when you have dual subs fairly close together (like you do on the front wall) that even with an AVR with Dual sub outs and XT32 SubEQ HT, you may actually get better results using only 1 sub out and using a Y splitter and let Audyssey treat them as one subwoofer. You ended up with a pretty smooth graph so may not help you much, but something else to play with
@Subwoofer101
@Subwoofer101 7 лет назад
Thanks! I think he's right, and probably why I like running them at the exact same distance on the AVR vs actual distance. I'll tinker...
@rlwings
@rlwings 6 лет назад
The whole point of setting your sub to 75db is so that your final result will leave you with the largest possible trim range on the receiver when Audyssey finishes calibrating. The closer to '0' you can land the better because this will leave you with the largest possible trim range for personal taste adjustments afterword. ie. from -12 to +12. ... Why wouldn't you aim for a final result of '0'? You want (need) the final result to fall within the receiver's range of -12 to +12 so why wouldn't you aim for the middle of that range, '0'?
@Subwoofer101
@Subwoofer101 6 лет назад
Because at 0.0 on the AVR, your subwoofer's gain needs to be lower than it would need to be at -11.0 which makes for relatively "soft" bass. Going much above 0.0 leaves you more susceptible to experiencing clipping on the subwoofer amplifier. 0.0 might seem "right", but the only reason I'd run it that way is to soften the bass and reduce bleed-over for the neighbors. Being able to run the gain higher on the sub gives stronger bass, something people usually pay more money for. Give it a shot. You can always change it back.
@rlwings
@rlwings 6 лет назад
I can see what you're saying for people who want colorfully exciting and unnatural bass to be exaggerated beyond it's intention, however, in my living room, critically listening to high res jazz, I have the couch up against the wall so I always get exaggerated bass (standing waves) boominess at certain frequencies at my MLP even after running Audyssey... So I find that I get much more natural sounding bass by turning down the sub gain and letting the AVR calibrate closer to '0'. Bass needs to sound like a continuation of descending frequencies melting into the front speakers and not have an unnaturally loud presence caused by the sub amp being too quick and sensitive to it's line-level input... which most people mistakenly consider as being good bass... The room should sound flat, not skewed toward the low end.
@Subwoofer101
@Subwoofer101 6 лет назад
Sounds like you could really benefit from pulling the sofa away from the wall. May not be possible in your case, and I understand that, but being so close to a boundary like that is probably more the issue for over exaggerating bass. I don't like unnatural sounding bass either, hate it actually. Audyssey states not to take measurements too close to walls for that reason.

@linkeddevices

Why do you like the flat setting? That's all charlatan sales pitches from the time they started putting "digital" on everything. Speakers designed for a flat are only for studio reference. For loud speakers in listening range the curve is supposed to follow the loudness curve of your ears which is why Audyssey ads the dip and roll off. In fact loud speaker manufacturers that still tune their speakers to the human ear already add those to your speaker so speaker calibration just restores your speakers to their glory
@Subwoofer101
@Subwoofer101 6 лет назад
A sales pitch has nothing to do with my preference for the "Flat" setting. When I run room correction, "Reference" is the default setting, and every input get's it. I'll find myself annoyed with the sound, and reliably it's because of the "Reference" setting is engaged. Setting it back to "Flat" restores my enjoyment. It's a personal preference, neither right or wrong.
