Why didn't they call in explosive experts? I don't think this was the best way to handle this.

Probably due to time being of the essence with such old and volatile dynamite. The length of time it sits there , it's a ticking time bomb at that point.

They could have safely removed the old dynamite. and saved this house. I say this because I worked with explosives for 45 years on a daily basis. Dealt with a lot of old and leaking dynamite over my career. IMHO they have watched too many old westerns.

Just so people know. The dynamite was handed down through several generations. The newest inheritor saw the dynamite and she called 911. The police, the fire department and the bomb squad all showed up. The dynamite was leaking, crystalizing and extremely unstable. If they tried to move it, it could have exploded and set off the other dynamite that was in the house, and it could also have killed people. They evacuated the houses surrounding the houses and then set it off. They probably did it that time of the morning so there would not be people about that could possibly get hurt.
