I needed this so much. I wish more people talked about how depression can impact our natural hair routines.

I have vowed to change my hair by manipulation, but never with scissors or chemicals when I'm going through any type of psyche episode. My hair has finally begun to grow. I used to do that quite often. Now, I'm using yarn to put in box braids. When I need to, I spray my hair with a natural shine and mist spray, put edge control, grease, and gels on my roots, then change the style of my yarn braids. That way, can soothe myself by touching my scalp, but not kill my self confidence by killing my skin or wacking off my hair.

Sadly, I would cut my hair off completely because after an episode of depression/anxiety it would be loc’d or matted Thx for sharing this...I thought it was just me but it really feels like it takes all the energy you have to deal with your hair in this state when depressed. Having other people share their natural hair journeys on RU-vid has made all the difference for me. I have not chopped off all of my hair in an episode since and I have more products and tools (thanks to info from others) to keep up grooming more easily.

I’m so sorry sis we love you. And being bullied is the worst! Even if you have a loving family; I believe being bullied can still have long term psychological effects.
@AnimeFreak-dn6zt
@AnimeFreak-dn6zt 3 года назад
It really does that is why I do not like it when some people tell you to just get over it and that it was the past but fail to realize it is the past that keep on coming up in the future. I was bullied very badly and what is so messed up by my own family members. I went to school in a small town and you know how that goes usually you is surrounded by kin folks specially if you from the South. Anyways they would call me all sorts of names and at times since I did not have a father because mines was murdered to hurt me they would say that is why your father died. I also had two surgeries and was bullied because I was in what they use to call sped which stands for special Ed cause I had reading comprehension problems and I had to repeat a grade and the list goes on. What I am happy about I graduated with the same degree as everybody else because I worked for it by not getting all the help I did everything for the most part on my own and I refuse help all the time. Also my mom and grandparents always had my back so I worked harder to cope with my reading problems and I ended graduating with top scores and getting two scholarships and I refused to get help in college too and did everything on my own yet again and graduated with three degrees. Also just because I did a lot does not mean that I can cope with my depression.

It messes you up, I use to be teased when I was younger just coming into America and y’all kids are ruthless, it made me self conscious about things people don’t even notice about me. I’ve been getting better but there’s still a hint of PTSD left, I don’t handle being teased about what was the target of bullying at all, even when the person doesn’t mean harm.

I feel you. I haven't washed mine in almost a month either (and I workout - so it makes things worse). Natural 4 type hair is really hard to deal with. But unfortunately, I have to wash mine more often now b/c if I don't my forehead and scalp start building up really bad dandruff scales and I've lost my hairline b/c of this. I'm using some oils to help it grow back. I do see little baby hairs trying to grow. But I know I have to wash my scalp more frequently to keep the dandruff scales at bay. ugh! I get overwhelmed just thinking about washing my hair. We'll get through this.

@@faa1412 You may have psoriasis.. I get this sometimes as well. Worst case, it covers my entire hairline, but my hair never falls out. I recommend Selsun Blue. Oil may work sometimes, but the flakes come from the over production of skin cells, not dryness.

But yeah, just last week somebody told me it was on my sleeve. Seems that I was made that way. Took me practically my whole life to realize that it's perfectly ok. Like, I am enough. I hope it's not lost on anyone how unbelievably personal this video is. You're the role model I wish I had when I was younger Joy-El - I really struggled with my hair and I'd go months without detangling or washing it as a teen and college student. Things are a little better now that I'm comfortable with doing wash and gos, but it would have meant a lot to see another person with hair like mine who also struggled with anxiety/depression, I wouldn't have felt so alone. Type 4 hair doesn't give anyone break, and maintaining it is often overwhelming even on the best of days, and I'm so proud of you for shedding some light on how difficult it is for anyone with anxiety/depression. 💜💜

My 4b hair would be tangled, dirty and dry and I didn't care...I had no energy to take care of it...spend 6 hours of a wash day 😞😭 On my darkest time my hair was breaking , not growing. It’s crazy how certain situations can trigger all the trauma you haven’t dealt with, or you have and it just comes back to bother you. I had a relationship end about a year and a half ago and it’s triggered trauma and different things will hit me randomly. Even last night, and it isn’t him who makes me upset it’s all the emotions and trauma that he triggered in me. All the fears and insecurities and things you think you’ve buried are exposed. It really sucks. Finding a therapist who can actually help you and not mask emotions until they come back is the best thing you can do. I plan on going back to my therapist soon so I can get back on track. Feeling broken on top of this pandemic has really taken a toll on most of us and I’m hoping we can come out of this better.

Recently, I asked my ladies Bible study group to pray for those who are suffering from depression. I thought of it because 1 of my fave YTers said "due to depression, she was done posting for the rest of the year." She said I could add her to our prayer list. I’m going to add you, too (& honestly we say "for ANYONE who’s suffering...") But, I do think there is Power in saying a person’s name. I'm glad you found 2 great doctors for you. I don’t have many bouts of clinical depression. But, I feel them & the lesser blues coming on. When I do, I hurry up and get some necessary things done. IF you feel yours coming, because your hair has grown so much now, see if you can get someone to put in 4 quick cornrows. Nothing fancy, just functional. Then that's 1 less thing you'll have weighing on you. Maybe? I am happy for you that you were able to get this video done and your hair detangled. I know that took effort. 👍🏽👏🏽

What really helps is putting my hair in braids or twist (with and without added hair). If my hair is in braids or twist it's one less than to worry about when I hit a depressive state. Or you can just do some simple twist or corn rolls and slap on a wig. I definitely understand when it comes to mental health. I had to resign my job because it was making my ptsd worse. What I've learn so far is to trust your gut instinct and put yourself (mental health) first.

Just having someone say/mean 'your feelings and mental health is valid', 'you need to rest, and not push when it is not ok to do so', 'your situation is understood', 'you can do small steps and should consider each of them a huge success', 'you are not a failure as a human being', 'your depression is part of you, and that is ok', 'it is only an issue if you feel it is an issue' etc. Especially from a stranger, means a lot as my depression tells me that 'friends and family and doctors and support staff etc are supposed to say that, so it doesn''t count'. You just helped me assertively stand up to my depression, and push back the anxiety and fears around showering... or at least try! (Yeah, I have those feelings because of how long it has been since my last one and therefore it is 'new'. I highly recommend NOT walking in the neighbourhood between my ears, especially regarding the mental gymnastics to make the weird antilogic make logical sense!). Given how horrible depression is (and wouldn't wish it on anyone!). I would like to suggest something to help possibly limit the frequency and/or duration of your depressive episode. I do have a big recommendation other than making a depression diary. It may not work, but it might be something to think about. I recommend having a chat with a doctor. Have a blood test and test levels vitamin D, vitamin B12, folate, iron, magnesium, full blood levels, calcium, and selenium. Not just with mental health, but with hormones. I am a female, and found I had the scary risky version of my episodes when I am due or on my period flow. I know some people get various issues at different times during the menstrual cycle (e.g. not the flow time, maybe after the flow time, or before the flow time, or that weird time that is like a week after the flow but a week before the before flow!). I also had irregular periods, which were weird. They were heavy for each month, but I might not have a flow time that month, so I would have the equivalent of two or however many months it had been since my last flow. It took over a month to recover from just one period. It was ridiculous. So I went to the doctor and I was fortunate that a certain medication could be used to regulate the flow time. Then when I was sure the flow time caused other issues, the medication was adapted to stop my period all together. Due to other health conditions including malabsorption at times, I was suggested to have an implant (family history does not like the implant down there, so I went for an arm one!). I now take medication, and have the implant. It has stopped the periods for me, and thus stabilised my hormones... and made my depression more managable. Since then I have had additional health conditions, and I am sincerely grateful that the treatments to stop the period is still effective (at least up to time of writing, let me not jinx it!), as I would not be able to even manage to think how bad the conditions would be if I was menstruating. It would be a horror show, and my health would have seriously declined. I likely would have moved in with my parents permanently because I would not be able to cope, and would feel like I was going backwards. I was also annoyed that what worked for other people in my family, didn't work for me. I think it was because I let it get so so so so much worse than either of my parents did. I saw them work through it, so I thought that is how to manage it... Maybe for some, not for me at that time. It's been about a decade since I last worked due to how problematic my functionning is. Hope this may help someone. Thankyou for reading.

As someone who has depression and body dysmorphic disorder, my natural hair journey has been quite tumultuous this year. I was diagnosed with these disorders two years ago at 16, and although I've made tremendous progress, I still have a long journey ahead of me. As of now, my hair is in mini braids to avoid any matting and tangles, which happens when I don't have the energy to wash my hair or I am feeling too "ugly" or "deformed" to look in the mirror. Mental illnesses is such an essential topic that needs to be talk about more in the BC. It's not a white people problem. I really wish you the best, Joy-el, as well as anyone who reads this comment. Like I always say, flowers do wither, but they eventually bloom again.

Thank you for this video. I’m literally going through a really hard episode right now. A 5 year relationship with someone I truly loved just came to and end on top of other life changing things going on at the same time. I’m jus trying to be ok and get my footing. But I appreciate knowing I’m not alone. I just did my hair routine the other day after not touching my hair for a while. I can totally relate and I’m so grateful that you shared this. Many people wouldn’t even think about the affects that mental health has on natural hair.

Thank you so much for sharing this sensitive part of your life with us. I have struggled with Anxiety since I was 14. For years it took the form of an eating disorder. I fought and was able to win that battle but as an adult I still deal with generalized anxiety. My struggles inspired me to study psychology in college and work in mental health specializing in anxiety and depression. Im sure you already know this but one thing I noticed about my anxiety and a lot of my female clients is the episodes of anxiety and/or depression is often linked to our menstrual cycle. Tracking that can help you prepare for hormonal triggers that may be going on that you are not even aware of. Also keeping healthy levels of Vitamin D, Potassium, and B Vitamins is VERY important for mood and mental health. I pray that you have peace in those time when your mind won’t allow you to rest. You have a beautiful spirit and this will not dim your light.

Going thru this now, I didn’t realise i have been in this cycle in and out for 3 years now. Lost my mom in 2019 she was 53.5. Lost my brother last year a year after my mom. I stay home my partner takes care of me. I forget that grieving take along time. Those days where i feel I’m just lazy and unproductive, i remind myself that I’m still depressed. Also nice to see a beautiful woman that looks similar to myself. I’m, hyper sensitive myself, it easy for my emotions to kind get me stuck in phases. I’m glad i found you, you’ll get through this. I keep telling myself this everyday❤️☺️

I am glad you speak your truth and educate us on this matter because I been dealing with depression pretty much my whole life. Literally back in August of this year I had a nervous breakdown that I literally tried to commit suicide the same way I tried to in middle school. I remember that I started feeling dizzy from the stress and past out and I had very bad headache before and afterwards and then I came through. I do take medicine but I just got very overwhelmed that I could not take it anymore. I feel ashamed at times to feel the way I do but honestly whether I try to or not I can not help it. At times I still have suicidal thoughts but I just try my best to just keep on living and keep telling myself that I am worth it.

@@noellerobin9896 I had this dream about two years ago. I saw Jesus on the cross. His face was very bloody. He said to me softly with great love, "If you were the only one in the world, I would have died for you." Then I woke up. I knew this dream was not just for me but for everyone. I pray this gives you comfort. JESUS loves you, so very much. I, too, suffer from depression. Listening to worship music, praying and reading the bible keeps me going. I understand what you are going through. I wish more naturalistas can take a more holistic approach when talking about hair. Its not just what you put on your hair. It could be mental health, diet, etc. Since high school, I have suffered trichotillomania (hair pulling), depression, and a lack of proper nutrients. On top of that, I am diagnosed with aspergers. Every time I would try to style my hair and moisturize it, it would be dry no matter what. I wasn't getting the proper nutrients (as I found out later in life). The integrity of my hair was already damaged even while growing out. . After trying multiple times and depression getting worse, I gave up with at most times not styling or moisturizing my hair for at least 6 months to a year.

Joy-el, you can be completely healed from this. 1st, be conscious of every thought you have. 2nd, replace every negative thought with a positive expression (preferably from the bible). Do not try to suppress any negative thought. It will only come back. Replace it with a positive until it becomes automatic and you will be healed sooner than later. You are beautiful. You are loved.💕

Girl, I shaved off half my head during a depressive episode. I realized I was getting tired of doing my hair and I wanted something simpler and lazy. I got the haircut where the back and sides of my hair is shaved and I love it so much. I put in a lot less work on my hair. I literally only touch my hair on wash day. When I go out I just do a quick high puff unless I wanna be fancy.

Love you! I've been in and out of episodes all year. Amla oil has been a life saver, I'm type 3 but it works for my type 4 friends and family. You massage it into the scalp before a wash, it helps with growth, hair loss and breaks up my dry patches. Sometimes in an episode the most I'll do is just keep putting it on and braiding my hair away for a few.

I've been here many times since I became natural 10 years ago. When I feel myself going down, I moisture, seal and braid my hair in four sections even if i don't have the strength to detangle. It is at least some protection from further tangling, matting. If I go out, I wear something on my head. As I am feeling better, I detailed one section at a time. I rebraid until I have finish all sections and wash when I am up to it. I pray for your strength and healing. You are definitely not alone in this.

Thanks for sharing. I also have depression and anxiety and know hair is the last thing I want to fuss with. I can say starting locs has been helpful because my hair looks good the majority of the time and I don’t have to fuss with it. Just wake up, and go (I chose a semi free form approach, so mainly just separate the roots vs retwist, but I find even more manicured locs are easier than loose hair). I personally still recommend starting with a loose hair journey because that is how you truly learn those aspects of self love and acceptance tied to your natural aesthetic. Learning and loving your natural loose hair texture is huge. That said, you may want to look into locs an option for the future. There are SO many ways to start, sizes, etc and it can be overwhelming. Fortunately there are also so many helpful loc youtube videos. The freedom is amazing. I’m obviously partial to locs now of course lol.

Sensitive people are a gift to the world, because they are the ones who make it a better place too, if they are able to get some strength and support constantly, in the way that less sensitive people have naturally. Both my kids are highly sensitive, one is severe autistic and non verbal, but the best person I have ever met (literally! his nurses tell me similar things, that he makes their lives better, that they think he is an angel in their lives etc) and the other is verbal and very intelligent, but also autistic, just less, But they both have vibes and ways of absorbing the world that used to be appreciated. Tribes in Sahara Desert (my son's therapist told me this, she has travelled the world and done autism therapy for children and young adults around the world, for the Estee Lauder family, for families in Canada, Pakistan, Kuwait royal family, etc) SHE TOLD ME that there are tribes in Sahara area, whose word for 'autistic ' and 'sensitive' people (from childhood) is something like 'the wise ones'...because they recognize that even though those people may need more support or understanding, they are the wise ones among them (they see things at a different level) and to be honest I agree. These people are a blessing. We cannot compare the usefulness of a metal mug versus a glass or porcelain vase - both are useful, one is just more fragile than the other, both add to our lives, one just has to be protected more and serves a different purpose. YOU ARE LIKE THAT TOO. YOU ARE THE PORCELAIN VASE.
