Thoroughly enjoyed watching part 1 & 2 and well done to you and Albert on the QE1 hammered. I was watching another detectival video and they were filming themselves live whilst walking and detecting. Hard to explain but on every step they swung their detector then take a step forward the swing again. But their step was longer than their swing. So on every step they missed near to a foot they didn’t cover with their detector. So no wonder you we’re finding great finds that others missed. Watching and seeing it was a great lesson for me. Once again many thanks for the great videos and content. Looking forward to seeing you on the next. 🇦🇺

Hi, John, That lead item you discovered while you were talking to 'Sneaky Pete' at the 9:40 min point in your video looks very much like a Roman slingshot of the kind that would have been used by members of an auxiliary unit of Balearic slingers at the time of the Emperor Claudius's invasion of what subsequently became the Roman province of Britannia in 43 A.D. Might be well worth your while to contact the British Museum in London and send them a photo - I bet they have hundreds of them! Best wishes and good prospecting to you and all of your fellow 'Scottish Detectorists' !

Just my love token info for what it is worth they used to think that these coins were love tokens but the belief now is that they bent the coins one way then the other way just to make sure they were not forgeries if they were the coating if silver or gold would have split. P.S. hoards of silver coins have been found bent the same way

More great finds, wow I've never seen a guinea before .. well - never seen most of the coins you dig up before, so interesting. Loved seeing the Red Kites ... did you know they were hunted to extinction in the UK, and have been brought back by a very successful reintroduction program. As you can see they are thriving. They live in groups (unusual for raptors), are scavengers, and like all birds of prey have keen eyesight for spotting tiny creatures far below, also they like picking up shiny things to take back to their nests ! 😁 ...seems apt that you had these birds all around 😉

I spoke to one of the locals about the red kites as I too have never seen so many of them, he said the farmers aren't fond of them as apparently when lambing season starts they hover waiting to pounce on a new born and peck it's eyes out! They certainly wasn't shy I watched a couple of them diving down to the ground a couple of meters away from a detectorist to get the worms pretty big when they are close to you.... Still beautiful birds none the less

@thescottishdetectorist
@thescottishdetectorist Год назад
Many thanks Andy. Well I’ve not yet had it long enough to give a full review. Weight wise I don’t really notice the difference versus the 11” I’ve used for a year, but maybe I just have big muscles 😂 Depth, not a big increase maybe an inch or two though I mostly dig plough soil so maybe more noticeable in pasture. I certainly hit some deep shotgun caps and buttons and lead at Detectival on pasture. It’s a pain in uneven ploughed fields because it’s bigger It’s better at cutting through barley stalks than the 11”. It is more sensitive. Initially big iron often comes through as a decent signal but I’m learning now how to deal with that. It’s expensive for what it is. I’d say £200 is a more reasonable valuation. Because coil battery life is far less than the control unit it was great at Detectival to be able to use one coil one day and switch over for day two as I had no recharging option I’m glad I bought it but I’d have hoped for consistently deeper targets than the 11” gets me but as I say as it’s mostly plough it’s not such an issue for me. Biggest plus is coverage. Basically 25% or so more coverage per swing which adds up to a lot over a days detecting. I plan to do a head to head video v the 11” eventually just to see how many targets it picks up versus the 11”. But I do like it !

Congrats to Andy, that is a very lovely token. Do you know how many steps or miles/kilometers you walk at an event like this? Looks like a work out. As always enjoyed your video. Oh, also how much time do you spend editing these videos? On average. Seems like a lot of work, but you seem to have found a recipe that works really well. Don’t quit your day job yet, but you might have something here. 😊 ;-)
@thescottishdetectorist
@thescottishdetectorist Год назад
Thanks TM! We cover a lot of miles. In a full 8hrs 6 to 10miles, much of it on ploughed fields, so it’s a lot of work. It is a lot of work making the videos and obviously I’m filming every hole as I don’t know if it will be junk or not junk, so for every 3 minutes of good footage there’s probably 30 minutes if bad footage you don’t see! Then editing sometimes having to play with volume, deal with wind noise and so on it varies but to pull a video together usually 3 to 6hrs. Then I have to upload via my terrible internet speed, hence its only 920p quality and not 1080p or 4k takes up to three hours for a 30 minute video. Then RU-vid has to verify it for copyright etc and it’s become a full day! But I enjoy it, I love spreading the word of the hobby and people seem to enjoy watching which is great too! Thanks for watching and best wishes

Tell your wife I’ve written you’re up for a hot bath and a massage. Hope it helps. 🤞🤞

Hi Mark. Back in the Roman period this area was the breadbasket of Roman Britannia. Lots of Roman roads and trackways and villas and agriculture and later, Saxon, Viking, medieval and not far from London too! So lots going on and as you can see by the finds some phenomenal losses over the centuries

How on Earth does anything grow in that soil? It's 1/4 clay and 1/2 flint, and you actually have farmers planting crops! You need to come to Canada and see our soil here. In my acreage the soil is as black as the ace of spades and the only clutter in it is various bit of decaying plant matter, the rock, when there were any were cleaned out by the farmer who had it about three or four generations before me, and they are large river like rocks that a family would walk through the field and pick up the stones and put them in the wagon and then used to build a barn or a workshop or even a house if you happen to be close enough to an ancient river bed. but the soil that looks like that would never have been even used for planting but used as pasture if at all. Sorry I don't mean to condescend, but that soil is atrocious, surely the soil in Scotland is better than that English flint nappers wasteland! Other than that nice finds, especially that Gold Guinea that man found used as a love token! Gold is always a good find!
@thescottishdetectorist
@thescottishdetectorist Год назад
I agree. The soil I’ve seen so far in the south of England is really poor versus Scottish soil but I suppose they just grow the crops that suit the soil whereas in Scotland we have far more options

@thescottishdetectorist
@thescottishdetectorist Год назад
Hi Mark, knackered means exhausted! I believe a knacker in the old days was someone who collected dead live stock to take them to a ‘knackers yard’ to be disposed of, and that’s where it comes from! Best wishes

Gold flecks were flying into the air as you scrubbed that gilt button with a stiff toothbrush.
@thescottishdetectorist
@thescottishdetectorist Год назад
Hi Bolin, at one time the whole button was gold gilded, it’s lost all the guilding on one side just by being in the soil and the other side is rough, but it’s one of 5 guilded buttons from the day and one of 200+ from the weekend and whilst being 250/300yrs old it’s a common find. I looked in some of the junk bins at the side of the field and they were full of 50-300 year old buttons people had thrown away. Sad to see and I keep all mine but they have no historical value or rarity, that’s not to say I don’t value them or mistreat them, they are just a common find and in the soil another 20 yrs would be blank

Stupid question, how can “William II also be William III”?
@thescottishdetectorist
@thescottishdetectorist Год назад
Not stupid at all! Scotland and England were separate countries until 1707 when we joined into the UK with England. In 1603 our monarchies which until that point were independent of each other also joined with James VI of Scotland (son of Mary Queen of Scot’s) becoming king of England, but they’d never had a James I 2nd, 3rd, 4th 5th or 6th before so he stayed James VI of Scotlandand also known as James I of England. William III of England is William II of Scotland because we’d only had one king William before back in the 12th century so he was only our second William in 1688! Technically Elizabeth II should have been known as Elizabeth I of Scotland as we’d never had an Elizabeth I in Scotland as Elizabeth I was only Queen of England….. but Winston Churchill passed laws so she became Elizabeth II of Scotland too when she Vance Queen in 1952…. Confusing isn’t it 😂
