Detroit Diesel 2-71 engine overhaul and start 

These and the 3 cylinder detroits were commonly used in industrial construction equipment, refrigeration cars for freight trains, generators ect not an on road bus or truck engine like you would typically see a detroit in.

My first job was working at Harpers back in 69. What a life’s education that was for a 14 year old. That’s when I fell in love with Cabover Kenworth’s. Owned two of them, drove one for 26 years.

How did that work for him in a pick-up?.... couldn't have been much fun to drive - they don't have limiting speed type governors for them, because they were never intended for any kind of automotive applications. The 3-71 would work though, because they did have limiting speed governors for them as they were used in numerous types of smaller road equipment machines... ie; smaller road graders, "steam" rollers, paving machines, etc, etc.

Probably no danger of speeding tickets.

I want to stick one of these in a single seat road going car looking a little like 1920s racers with a bit of "dieselpunk" design flair with the engine behind the driver. It doesn't need to be fast. And the 920# weight is fine too. Just sound good and be fun to drive. I'm planning to use a 2+2+2 transfer gearbox I have from an old piece of farm equipment. (I'm not sure what the machine did to be honest, I helped the farmer take it apart for scrap and the gearbox was good so he let me keep it as payment for my work. I've had it for years) The two gears are sequential (N - 1st - 2nd) and then you pull the lever back to neutral & push a second lever forward to the next detent to change to the next pair of gears. Like a mini twin stick. Complicated, but would be a hoot to drive around. If that doesn't work, I'll use a beefed up VW bus transaxle.

it has a lobed blower on it all ready i have one in about the same condition that i need to get time to put back together

FR Rapp blower Dosnt provide any boost on a 2 stroke jimmy. It provides positive crankcase pressure for ring seal.

dude every deisel engine has a turbo it wouldnt run with out one you can though upgrade your fuel system blower pistons racks and blower just letting you know.

@@hunter7476 unless you were talking about this design wouldn't run without a blower, there is plenty of diesels that have no turbos and no blowers. My dad's old 84' izusu pup has a naturally aspirated 2.2l 4cyl diesel, I have a 5kw onan generator naturally aspirated and just about have my tractor back together with a naturally aspirated yanmar 3t90j

@@matthewhoffman9242 You do realise the GM is a two stroke engine? It's closer to a lawn mower in design than an Isuzu. They will not run without a blower to push fresh air into the cylinders, they don't have a reed valve crankcase like smaller engines.

the 53s were good engines

They were great at converting diesel fuel into noise and smoke... they also made a few horsepower - almost enough to get out of its own way

The 2-71 head fits only one engine 3-4-6 all fit inline and v engine

Wouldn't be much of a hot rod but I'd be very cool

I saw 1.484 inches listed for an hv6 . Wish I still had the height gauge set would measure it for you. Nice little engine!

You want toknow the colour of the badge on the injector to get the right timing gauge or mearsurementAnd the number N65 stc.

Ron Armstrong You may want to rethink the idea...My brother-in-law had an 84 F100 SWB 2wd with a 2.5L? four-cylinder Perkins diesel in place of a probable 4.9L straight-six gas engine. While getting around town & loads in the bed were just fine, pulling grades & such, highlighted its severe lack of power...We got "stuck" trying to ascend a moderately steep ramp into a garbage-dump after dumping our refuse...it was quite the pathetic sight seeing a Ford trying so hard to climb such a mediocre grade....just plain ran out of power.

it only makes about 75 to 80 HP. Kinda small for that. Try for a 4-71t.

With the right gearing this would power an automobile just fine. It has 3x the torque of most 4 cylinder gas motors, but only has about 600 useful rpm in the power band. Whereas a small gas motor will utilize 1200 to 2200 rpm for acceleration in the power band.

It is the blower.

On the initial start it was air in the fuel causing late injection, once they sorted out the fuel tank it sounded sweet.

I have a 1950s ac hd5g crawler loader. It has a 2-71 in it for a motor. There is this long tube about 2 inches wide coming from the bellhousing/transmission area and i can see it in your video. That is the transmission fluid fill spot right? Where/how do i add engine oil? I can only find the dipstick but no fill point. Is the engine oil and transmission the same fluid? Thanks

No, that 2" tube is your engine oil fill. I know it looks like it is going to the bell housing but does not. You see the flywheel open there and it is a dry bell housing. The transmission is a separate lube system. Not sure what fluid they use in the trans.

appreciate the help how much oil does it take? where could i get a new oil filter? do you know where i might be able to get a new fan, belts, and radiator? are things able to be swapped over to alternators or are the generators better? thanks again

We used 6 Quarts of oil. the oil filter we used was a Wix brand # 51010. The fan belt we used was Dayco # 22620. Pay attention to your system for 6 volt or 12 volt. If it is a 12 volt then you could switch to an alternator (best with a built in regulator).

Wrong. In order to change the engines rotation there are a number of parts that need to be changed. The Camshaft, starter, fuel pump, oil pump and water pump. The idler gear location is also changed. Yes they can start (bump start) in reverse but they will tear themselves apart in a short time
