A fate worse than death? Surviving the initial blast some how. Because nobody is coming to rescue you. The radiation after the blast will be too high. You only hope is to walk out of the danger zone because odds are any vehicles in the area won't operate due to EMP generated by the burst. And if you have injuries sustained from the blast or debris, it is even worse. All you can do is try to walk in a single direction and hope that you reach whatever parameter the government sets up.

The GZ fireball for all of those is much (much) smaller. There is a natural limit on the size of the fireball which is partly why they stopped building them bigger (weapon weight also). The burned out areas are accurate for the intense heat effect which is created though. Anyone in those areas exposed to the weapon will burn to death. Those inside even concrete buildings will be ok though after about ten miles of the biggest bombs. It’s still hell’s picnic for the entire metro area

fun fact: The Tsar Bomba that was detonated was only powered on 1/100 of its original potential ( could be designed until 5000 megatons with Lithium-7). And they only detonated 58 megatons instead of 100, because the pilot wouldn't escape from the blast zone․

I was thinking the same thing. There are a lot of these videos comparing nuke sizes by dropping them on New York, and the fireball sizes are absolutely all over the place. One video says the Hiroshima bomb would take out half of Manhattan, another says it would only char a few blocks. I don’t think anyone has the slightest idea.

@@factchompI think you misunderstand. It's just a problem with the explosion animation. You seemed to have animated only the final mushroom cloud size/height in the video, but that is different than the initial fireball. For example, the fireball of the Tsar Bomba reached a maximum diameter of 4 kilometers, but of course the animation shown in this video resembles the final maximum height of the mushroom cloud long after the bomb detonates.

Nuclear warheads are typically airburst weapons, because allowing them to contact the ground would cause them to deliver a disproportionate amount of the energy into the earth, precisely where it will get dissipated and do little damage.
