This video is GREAT for those recuperating from arm problems, after being "shutdown" for a week or two.. This will get the arm back in "shape," without having to throw--except for the pre and LONG toss stuff at the end..you can skip that for now.

The point of long toss is to stretch your arm out, throwing on a line everytime is doing nothing for you, throw with an arc and move back 200ft plus, and then pull down and throw on a line; you will be surprised how much stronger your arm will get.

It's so easy to externally rotate when you throw on an arc, as long as you keep it loose in the arm. Try it

You throw on a line lengthening each set until arc then shorten and then throw on a line for a short period of time and your done unless you want to ruin your arm.

yea the catcher has solid arm mechanics but when you get deep like that in longtoss like someone stated below you want to get more arc on the ball if you want any gains. and as you bring in graudally start throwing ball on a line

I'm not really sure how well you can really listen to your arm if you're going 80-100% right out of the gate. You got to work up to that and really get loose. "Calm before the storm."

When it comes to throwing strength, I've always been a little jealous of wiry guys because it seems like they have an advantage with naturally better arm strength (or throwing strength at least). But I also think flexibility is important, and this video shows you that, and luckily that can be built up.
@DenalPvP
@DenalPvP 5 лет назад
Condused overtime you will build up that arm strength to be able to throw harder and farther. I am kind of a similar situation. I got hurt and was out for a year and a half and lost a lot of arm strength and velocity but now I’m slowly building it back up.

+Boats N Hoes - It's difficult for anyone to say what you're doing wrong without watching you throw. Maybe your form and technique are great, and you have a tiny nagging injury. There's no shortage of coaching tips here on you-tube...I would suggest you spend time watching several different coaches explain and break down proper throwing mechanics. Pay attention to the things that keep coming up..you know...look for common themes. But ultimately choose a coach you trust and explains things in a way you understand. Compare yourself to the pro's. Pick players that are known for having great arms for extended periods of time. Study them. Discover what they have in common. Watch the feet, torso, and arm movements closely. For example...watch how the torso seems to be stretched way out as the arm goes back...setting yourself up to bring your arm over the top like a whip, with momentum that was created from the ground up. If your shoulder hurts when you start throwing hard, I would assume (barring injury or simply not throwing enough) you are relying too much on the muscles in your shoulder, as opposed to all the larger muscle groups that should be involved with proper mechanics. Pace yourself. When it hurts...slow down...go back to basics.

how do you put curve on the ball when long tossing? what are the benefits of curving the ball? I've just started playing again after 14 years off and I'm keen for any tips, cheers :)
@miked1120
@miked1120 10 лет назад
The ball should NOT be curving. If it does, there is an issue with the wrist at release and needs to be corrected.
@scottv1781
@scottv1781 10 лет назад
miked1120 but in this vid it looks as though the ball tapers off to the right as it nears the target, and after watching a few throw-overs from catchers it seems like the ball curves toward the runner?
@miked1120
@miked1120 10 лет назад
Yes, in this video, the ball is curving. Basic geometry states the shortest distance between two points, is a straight line. The ball may have some curve, due to the wrist angle at release or the catcher may not have a perfect four seam grip, but I assure you, the curve is not done on purpose, as in they don't actually practice making the ball curve. Catchers work on a quick, fast, strong release, and footwork.
@MatthewGagnon1980
@MatthewGagnon1980 10 лет назад
miked1120 Guess you don't really play baseball, Mike. All outfielders have a fade, for the most part. That is a perfectly natural outfield throw you see all the time, particularly when the outfielder doesn't have time to feel his way to a 4 seam grip. Scott Venning, the reason it curves is because he is throwing with a two-seam grip on the ball with extreme armspeed, which makes it dive down and away. It does that due to the airflow over the laces.
@micd8189
@micd8189 10 лет назад
Matthew Gagnon The 'fade' is an error in mechanics. Long story short. Check out videos from laflippin. For a right-handed pitcher, right after release of the baseball, the palm turns toward 3d base. It's natural, but yet the pitch is straight. The fade is caused by not 'being on top' of the baseball when thrown/at release. Doesn't matter if they have a 4 seam grip or not. Ask any good outfielder. They work on NOT having a fade. I wasn't that great of a right fielder, third baseman nor pitcher, because I only played to AA after college.

When you start to lengthen the distance and move father out while long tossing, you need way more arc on the ball. Stay loose, follow through more, and don't put anything on it, just enough to get it there. Once you are throwing the ball as far as you possibly can, you are using all of your energy. Once you work it back in you maintain the same exact motion as you did at your max distance but you adjust the angle in order for the ball to hit your target. Even at 60 feet (coming back in phase) you are still throwing the same as you were at 300 feet, just on a line. These guys are so worried about how cool their mechanics look they are neglecting to follow through, maintain an arc on their throws, and actually get the ball to their targets. Long toss isn't long toss if you throw it on a line only to bounce 30 feet in front of your target. Their warm-up was the only helpful part of this video.
@gforce9998
@gforce9998 9 лет назад
Johnathan Bjerk actually my friend you are incorrect, most really good instructors like the ones i had in college and pro ball told us to keep ball flat as possible per the distance we were throwing (yes some arc is inevitable) but we were supposed to bounce ball once as it got out partner. This is true partner long toss maintaining the body position most closely related to in game function. Arcing a ball and not putting power behind it is the reason most kids don't break 85 mph no matter what position they play. I threw 91-92 across diamond in testing done in training camp scouting evaluations (3rd base deep to 1st base chest high is all that counts) I did long toss to glove till we reached 225-240 ft, at 260-330 it was one hop with the flattest possible throw that could be made, so not putting ball high in air but yes its still probably 25-30 ft in air at those distances. Pretty sure the guys aren't worried about looking cool, I can tell you one is a catcher so his emphasis is to get on top and behind ball with his hand. One last thing, know what pro outfielders do in side work and offseason? throw to a target with exactly that, a high velocity one hop at about 20-30 ft in front of target like a bucket. It replicates a game throw to bag or plate, and it allows for velocity development unlike a big arcing throw which does not. You will learn I guess if you move on past HS.

Walking it in from 300 ft (just saying it as an example), to 250 ft, to 200 ft, to 150 ft, to 90 ft, to 60 ft. doing about 5-10 throws at each distance after you work your way all the way out to 300 ft. At around 150 ft you should start throwing it harder, keep throwing the ball harder as you work you way in. I usually do a quick flat ground bullpen(about 60% effort) when i get to 60 ft

@mfresh1965
@mfresh1965 11 лет назад
Exaggerating the follow thru and over the top motion, keeping your shoulder and your glove in during the throw in during practice, may take the tailing action out of the ball in live situation. You dont want your catcher running up the line only to get plowed before the ball gets there. Your allowed a quiet take your time instant... finding the seams.
