Yes, that happened near our place in India. Male bird died in an accident. But forest watchers find its nest and fed mom and its chicks until they are able to come out.

While walking through a jungle on one of Thialand's tropical islands I stumbled upon a couple of hornbills half a year ago. They were very territorial and attcked me when I approached too close. I told a friend of mine where to find them, a week later he sent me a video of his face with a bleeding cut. He came too close and wasn't careful.

When Nature did a similar segment back in the 1980s, they cut the entire back side of the hole during the off season, closing it back up with screws. When the hornbills returned, they set up a tent and replaced the cut section with a similar shaped piece of plexiglass. They had lights, cameras, crew, everything back there for the whole two months and the hornbills did not seem to mind. I would imagine with today’s technology you could just drill a small hole and put a fiber optic camera in there.

I'd heard about how these guys lock themselves inside trees to lay eggs, I didn't know they pulled out their flight feathers to make it so that they couldn't leave if they wanted to. That's more commitment than you'd see from most people.

Female does not pull the flight feathers to enable escape, she does it because 1. wings take too much space 2, because of that flight feathers would get very damaged anyway while she is moving in there 3.and then why not use them as free nesting material. Timing is so good she exits with fresh flight feathers at the time she needs to fly again.

selalu kagUm dengan dokumenter tentang hewan karena memikirkan bagaimana proses pembuatannya, menaruh kamera di sarang, memastikannya tidak dirusak atau jatuh tanpa mengusik objek observasi, tetang lamanya pengamatan dari awal hingga akhir demi beberapa menit hasil akhir saja. Bahkan menemukan dan mengetahui waktu yang tepat (musim kawin) untuk pengamatan saja perlu ilmu yang nggak main-main. 👍👍👍👍👍

This nesting behavior becomes a detriment for hornbills. A local resident living near the forest in India shared that hunters and animals easily locate hornbill nests due to the birds discarding waste and uneaten food, leaving visible marks on the ground. Sadly, hunters exploit this, targeting the hornbills for meat, a distressing situation.
